National/C-USA Highlights: Marshall currently stands fi rst nationally in tackles for loss (67), third in punt returns (19.50) and tied for third in fumbles recovered (10). The Herd is also tied for 10th in turnovers gained with 17. Individually, Vinny Curry is atop the national leaderboard in tackles for loss (17) and is second in sacks (9.5). George Carpenter is tied for second with three fumble recoveries, Omar Brown is fourth with 78 total tackles and solo tackles (48), Curry and Brown are tied for 10th with three forced fumbles, Rashad Jackson is tied for 10th with eight pass breakups, Monterius Lovett is tied for 12th with two fumble recoveries and Jackson is tied for 13th with nine passes defended. In Conference USA, Curry and Brown are also tied for fi rst with three forced fumbles, George Carpenter is tied for second with three fumble recoveries, Andre Booker is fourth with a 23.0 kick return average and Brown is tied for fourth with two interceptions.

Curry Named National, Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week: Marshall senior defensive lineman Vinny Curry was selected as the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, one day after being picked by Conference USA for the same honor, following the Herd’s 24-20 Homecoming victory over Rice on Saturday. Curry is the third Marshall defender to win the conference award this season, following linebackers George Carpenter (Sept. 12) and Tyson Gale (Oct. 3), and it is the fi fth time a Herd player has won a weekly honor (two Special Teams honors for punter Kase Whitehead).

The Neptune, N.J. native had another monster game Saturday, racking up nine tackles, which included four tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, to go with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. All four of the sacks Curry had a hand in came on third down, eff ectively killing each drive in the process. Another one of his quarterback pressures resulted in a Rice fumble that Curry himself recovered at the Owls’ 25-yard line. Finally, his strip of Rice RB Sam McGuffi e set up the Herd off ense at the Rice 23 with 3:31 left, with the Herd facing a 20-17 defi cit. Marshall then scored the game-winning touchdown fi ve plays later on a four-yard Tron Martinez scamper. On the season, Curry leads the nation in tackles for loss with 17 and is second with 9.5 sacks. His contributions have also helped the Herd rank fi rst nationally with 67 tackles for loss.

Curry is already on the 2011 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List. The Bronko Nagurski Trophy will be presented to the best defensive player in college football on Dec. 12 by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C. Five fi nalists for the Nagurski Trophy will be announced on Nov. 17.

Curry Moves Up The Charts: With 4.0 tackles for loss in the win over Rice, Vinny Curry is atop the leaderboard for career tackles for loss among active FBS student-athletes with 44.0. The complete list is below:

1 Vinny Curry, Marshall SR DL 44.0 2 Cordarro Law, Southern Miss. SR DL 41.53 Sean Spence, Miami SR LB 40.5 4 Mychal Sisson, Colorado St. SR LB 40.05 Scott Solomon, Rice SR DL 37.0

Streaking: The Herd has had fewer penalties than its opponent in four straight games, equaling a four-game stretch during the 2005 season (6/15 vs. UAB, 7/9 vs. UTEP, 2/4 vs. Tulane, 3/5 vs. Southern Miss). Marshall has also had as many or fewer turnovers than its opponent in four consecutive games. That last time the program had a longer streak was the last two games of the 2008 season (2/2 vs. Rice, 0/0 vs. Tulsa) and the fi rst four contests of the 2009 campaign (2/3 vs. Southern Illinois, 1/1 vs. Virginia Tech, 1/1 vs. Bowling Green, 1/2 vs. Memphis).

Coming Through in the Clutch: Marshall is one of just fi ve programs in the country that has an undefeated mark in at least three games that have been decided by one score or less. The list is below:

Kansas State 5 games, (5-0), 22 total pointsIllinois 3, (3-0), 9Auburn 3, (3-0), 14Marshall 3, (3-0), 14Penn State 3, (3-0), 15Syracuse 5, (4-1, 3 in OT), 23South Carolina 4, (3-1), 11Rutgers 3, (2-1), 6 Duke 3, (2-1), 7Colorado State 3, (2-1, one OT), 12San Jose State 3, (2-1), 14New Mexico State 3, (2-1), 20BYU 4, (2-2), 12Notre Dame 3, (1-2), 10Texas A&M 3, (1-2), 10

Rice Notes: Marshall quarterback A.J. Graham had a big day under center for the Herd, making his fi rst career start in the 24-20 win over Rice. His 129 rushing yards were the most for a Marshall player since Martin Ward’s 136 vs. SMU (Marshall 34-31 win) on Nov. 21, 2009. Graham’s rushing yardage was the fi rst 100-yard game for a Marshall quarterback since Bernard Morris rushed for 126 yards on 11 carries in a 26-7 win over ECU on Nov. 10, 2007. Graham’s second touchdown, which came on an 87-yard drive that concluded in the second quarter with his fi ve-yard touchdown run, was the team’s longest scoring drive of the season. As a team, the Herd rushed for 217 yards in the win, the most since it piled up 262 in the aforementioned win over SMU in 2009. Finally, Tyler Warner’s 45-yard fi eld goal to the end the fi rst half tied his career-long.

Whitehead Pins Them Back: Marshall punter Kase Whitehead has been adept at pinning the opposition deep in its own territory, with 13 kicks that have been downed inside the 20-yard line this season. That total ranks in a tie for 14th nationally. The list is below:

1. Steven Clark, Auburn 22 2. Ryan Allen, Louisiana Tech 20 Tyler Campbell, Ole Miss 20 4. Tress Way, Oklahoma 17 Ben Buchanan, Ohio State 17 Brett Baer, Louisiana 17 7. Will Atterberry, North Texas 16 8. Brad Elkin, Boise State 15 Josh Hubner, Arizona State 15 10. Jay Karutz, Eastern Michigan 13 Brian Schmiedebusch, Bowling Green 13 Kase Whitehead, Marshall 13 Andrew Shapiro, Fresno State 13 Bobby Cowan, Idaho 13

Struggling With Second: Marshall has been outscored 82-30 in the second quarter this season, after also being outscored 102-68 in the second stanza last season. The Herd outscored the opposition 110-93 in the second quarter in 2009.

Statistical Struggles: Currently, the Herd ranks near the bottom of the FBS in kickoff return yardage defense (111th, 26.0), third down conversion percentage (113th, 30.0 percent), total off ense (114th, 279.71), scoring off ense (115th, 14.71), fi rst downs gained (115th, 14.43), fourth down conversion percentage (T-116th, 16.67 percent), rushing touchdowns (T-116th, 3) and time of possession (117th, 26:19).

Marshall vs. Ranked OpponentsSince moving to Division I-A (FBS) in 1997, the Herd has enjoyed a pair of landmark victories against nationally-ranked opponents. The following is the Marshall Thundering Herd’s game-by-game results against NCAA FBS opponents ranked in the Associated Press (since 1936), UPI (1950-92), CNN (1993-96), ESPN/USA Today (1997-2004) or USA Today (since 2005) Top 25 polls since 1936.

Gale, Whitehead Claim Weekly Honors: Marshall linebacker Tyson Gale (Alva, Okla.) and punter Kase Whitehead (Maryville, Tenn.) both racked up weekly honors Monday following the Herd’s 17-13 win at Big East foe Louisville on Saturday.

Gale was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week by two outlets, one by a vote of the league’s media and the other by College Sports Madness (CollegeSportsMadness.com) after the program’s fi rst non-conference road win and fi rst victory over a BCS school since 2003. Whitehead was named the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Gale, a captain, had a team-high seven tackles on the day, including a tackle for loss, and the biggest play of the game when he stepped in front of Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s pass to pick it off at the UL 30-yard line with 4:32 left. That turnover put the Herd off ense in business deep in Cardinal territory and allowed it to cash in nearly three minutes later for the game-winning score. Gale led a defense that allowed just 60 yards rushing on 29 attempts (2.1 per carry) Saturday, including (-9) yards total off ense in the fi rst quarter.

Whitehead continued the pinpoint accuracy with his punting as he dropped four of his fi ve punts inside the 20 in Saturday’s victory. He also claimed the honor after Marshall’s 26-20 win over Southern Mississippi when he averaged 42.5 yards on eight punts and dropped fi ve kicks inside the eight-yard line.

Career-Highs: Individually, Andre Booker had his fi rst three catches of the season, which went for a career-high 66 yards in the 17-13 win at Louisville. Jazz King’s two-yard scoring reception in the fi rst quarter, was his fi rst career catch. Wideout Jermaine Kelson posted career-highs in catches (three), yards (40) and had a career-long grab (19 yards). Wayne Bonner made his fi rst catch since Oct. 17, 2009 against West Virginia and turned in his longest reception at Marshall — 23 yards. Tron Martinez had the longest reception of his career (25 yards).

Louisville Notes: Marshall’s 17-13 win at Louisville was not only the program’s fi rst win over a BCS team since a 2003 victory at sixth-ranked Kansas State (snapping a 19-game losing streak against BCS schools), it was also the fi rst non-conference road win since that victory as well. The Herd held the ball for 34 minutes, 44 seconds against the Cards, the longest for the school since a 36:08 mark in the 21-17 win over Ohio in the 2009 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. The 13 Cardinal points were the fewest the Herd has allowed in a non-conference game since falling 13-3 at No. 3 Georgia in 2004, and the fewest by a non-league foe in a Marshall victory since a 21-3 defeat of BYU in the 1999 Motor City Bowl.

UCF Notes: The Herd off ense struggled mightily in the downpour that took place in the loss at UCF. The 130 yards of total off ense, six fi rst downs and 19 minutes, 46 seconds of Time of Possession were the lowest totals for the program since entering Conference USA in 2005.

Hokie Notes: The Herd’s Vinny Curry blocked an extra point in the 30-10 loss to Virginia Tech, the fi rst time a Marshall player had accomplished the feat since Johnny Jones did so in a 52-21 loss at UTEP on Nov. 28, 2009. Marshall’s six rushing yards against VT was the lowest for the program since recording a -3 total in the 2004 Fort Worth Bowl in a 32-14 loss vs. Cincinnati.

SIX!: The Thundering Herd defense forced six turnovers in the 26-20 win over Southern Miss, the most since the program forced that many in a 59-14 win over Delaware in the second round of the I-AA playoff s on Nov. 30, 1996.

Herd Earns Several Weekly Honors: Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato, linebacker George Carpenter, defensive lineman Vinny Curry and punter Kase Whitehead all claimed weekly honors following the Herd’s 26-20 victory over Southern Mississippi Saturday afternoon at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Cato was named National Freshman of the Week by Rivals.com after his performance. The Miami, Fla. native completed 64.3 percent of his passes when he connected on 27 of 42 attempts for 275 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. With the Herd facing a 14-point fi rst half defi cit, the signal-caller engineered three touchdown drives, two of which ended with scoring tosses to wideout Aaron Dobson and the other to tight end Gator Hoskins.

Carpenter claimed Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors from the league offi ce and College Sports Madness (CollegeSportsMadness.com) after he recorded a game-high 13 tackles, including two tackles for loss, one sack, a forced one fumble and two fumble recoveries in a stellar all-around performance. His second fumble recovery was one of the biggest plays of the game, as he drilled USM’s Kendrick Hardy on the second play of the second half and alertly fell on the loose ball. That turnover set up the Marshall off ense deep in USM territory and allowed the Herd to tie the game fi ve plays later. He and his defensive teammates helped hold the Golden Eagles to just 75 rushing yards on 28 carries, while piling up fi ve sacks and forcing six USM turnovers.

One of those teammates was defensive end Vinny Curry, who was named National Defensive Lineman of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards (CollegeFootballPerformance.com). Curry had six stops on the day, including 4.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. One of those tackles for loss was a safety with 9:15 left in the contest when he caught Hardy in the end zone to give the Herd a 26-17

lead.

Whitehead might have been Marshall’s most important player in the Herd’s win as was named C-USA’s Special Teams Player of the Week. He averaged 42.5 yards on eight punts, but backed up the Golden Eagle off ense inside the 8-yard line on fi ve of those eight kicks. That fi eld position led to two Marshall touchdowns on the ensuing possessions and another resulted in a safety, giving the home team a nine-point lead.

Booker Shines: Return man Andre Booker had a whale of a game in the season-opening loss to West Virginia. He put the Herd up by a 7-0 mark quickly when he exploded for an 87-yard punt return for touchdown and followed that up with 93 kick return yards on four attempts to give him 180 all-purpose yards for the game. Prior to the punt return, Booker was also the last Marshall student-athlete to return a punt for touchdown when he victimized the Ohio Bobcats with a 58-yard return in the 2009 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. He followed that performance with four kick returns for 95 yards in the 26-20 win over Southern Miss.

Youth Movement: Marshall played 12 true freshmen and 28 redshirt and true freshmen in 2010, a fi gure that ranked among this highest in the nation. True freshmen Trevor Black, Zach Dunston, Demetrius Evans, Gator Hoskins, Jermaine Kelson, Tron Martinez, Darryl Roberts, T.J. THE LAST MEETING...

Marshall Turns Back Houston, 37-23

(Oct. 29, 2008)

HOUSTON, Tx. – Sporting green helmets and a new look off ense, Marshall University raced out to a 16-3 fi rst half lead against Houston and never looked back, cruising to a 37-23 victory. Marshall (4-4, 3-1 C-USA) kept the Cougar defense off balance early with a new off ensive package, featuring wide receiver Darius Passmore at quarterback. For the night Passmore carried eight times for 42 yards from the quarterback position and had three catches for 71 yards at wideout. Marshall physically dominated Houston on the ground producing 249 rushing yards. Darius Marshall led the way with 102 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. Senior Chubb Small had a career high 81 yards rushing. Quarterback Mark Cann produced a solid performance as well, completing 15-of-25 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns. The Herd defense surrendered 423 yards to the vaunted Houston off ense but limited the Cougars to a season-low 23 points. Houston’s Case Keenum threw for 317 yards, completing 22-of-41 passes. Turnovers proved to be the diff erence as Marshall turned three Cougar giveaways into points. Linebacker Maurice Kitchens had an interception and a fumble reovery. Ashton Hall had an interception as well. Marshall got on the board fi rst on its second possession. The Herd drove 71-yards in 13 plays to set up Ratanamorn’s fi rst fi eld goal of the night from 28 yards out. The teams traded punts on their next two drives before Marshall linebacker Maruice Kitchens picked off a Keenum throw and returned it to the Houston 43 yard-line. Ten plays later, Cann made the Cougars pay with a nine-yard touchdown to Slate to put the Herd up 10-0. After a quick three-and-out, Marshall was on the move once again. Cann hit Passmore down the sideline on a 65-yard strike down to the Houston 10. The Cougar defense was able to hold and Marshall settled for another Ratanamorn fi eld goal. Houston fi nally made it on to the scoreboard on the ensuing possession, stringing together a 12-play, 64-yard march to set up a Ben Bell 22-yard fi eld goal. However, Marshall extended the lead back to 13 before the half with 36-yard kick by Ratanamorn. Marshall got the ball to open the half but was forced to punt. On the ensuing possession, Houston moved the ball to the Marshall 1 yard-line, but Maurice Kitchens came up big once again, scooping up a fumble and returning it 80 yards to the Cougars’ 17. Cann then recorded his second touchdown strike of the game with a 5-yard toss to Emmanuel Spann in the back of the endzone. On the fi rst play Houston’s next possession, Keenum sailed a pass over the head of his intended receiver. The Herd’s Ashton Hall intercepted the ball and broke tackles all the way back to the Houston 3 yard-line. Cann plunged over the goal line four plays later to put Marshall ahead 30-3 and blow the game open for the Herd. Houston cut into the Herd’s lead with a 60-yard scoring drive, capped by a 14-yard pass from Keenum to Bryce Beall. Bell missed the point after and Marshall led 36-9. The Herd immediately regained the momentum as Darius Marshall returned the kickoff to Houston’s 32-yardline. Four plays later, Darius Marshall scampered 22-yards off right tackle and reversed fi eld for the touchdown. Just as quickly as Marshall extended its lead Houston cut it back. Keenum hit Kierre Johnson on a post pattern for a 59-yard scoring strike. Houston was able to score again with 2:27 remaining as Beall scored on a two-yard rush. However, that would be all for the Cougars as the Herd recovered the onside kick to seal the win.

Doc Holliday

Head Coach - Second Season

Marshall University Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick introduced Doc Holliday as the Thundering Herd’s 29th head football coach on December 17, 2009.

Holliday, a Hurricane W.Va. native, is widely regarded as one of the top recruiters in the nation and he brings with him 31 years of collegiate coaching experience to Marshall that includes stops at Florida, NC State and West Virginia.

“This was an extensive search. I looked at a lot of head coaches, coordinators and others and I could not convince myself of anyone that was better for this job than Doc Holliday,” Hamrick said. “He is a state native that understands and has a passion for this state and I am excited to have him as our head football coach.”

His fi rst Herd squad won four of its last fi ve games in 2010 and featured two fi rst-team All-Conference USA performers in defensive end Vinny Curry and linebacker

Mario Harvey. Marshall got it done in the classroom as well as tight end Lee Smith was named to C-USA’s All-Academic Team and the squad, as a whole, was recognized by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) for its outstanding graduation rate. The Herd was one of just 15 schools in major college football to have a graduation rate of 90 percent or better based on the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate formula.

During his coaching career, Holliday has coached in 20 bowl games, three national championship games and coached 11 players that have gone on to the National Football League. He has also coached four All-Americans and 16 student-athletes that have earned all-conference or All-East honors.

“My ultimate goal has always been to be a Division I head football coach at a major university and to have this opportunity at Marshall, a school rich in tradition and full of potential, is a dream come true,” Holliday said.

Holliday comes to Marshall after serving as associate head coach at West Virginia for the past two seasons where he also served as the director of recruiting while coaching tight ends and fullbacks for the Mountaineers. Rivals.com has named him one of the Top 25 recruiters in the nation and he helped WVU amass a 2009 recruiting class that was nationally ranked No. 22 by Scout.com and No. 27 by Rivals.com.

Prior to that, he worked as the associate head coach and safeties coach at the University of Florida from 2005 to 2007 and as the associate head coach and wide receivers coach at NC State from 2000-04. During his tenure at Florida, the Gators won the 2006 National Championship and the UF secondary led the SEC in interceptions in both 2005 and 2006. He also coached two All-SEC standouts Reggie Nelson and Major Wright. At NC State, he coached three of the top eight receivers in Wolfpack history (Koren Robinson, Bryan Peterson and Jerricho Cotchery) and the 2003 N.C. State team set six diff erent school-records for passing including yards, yards per game, passing touchdowns and completion percentage.

He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1979 and went on to serve in a variety of coaching positions at his alma mater that included serving as the wide receivers coach from 1983-1989 and again from 1993-1999, the inside linebackers coach from 1990-92 and as the assistant head coach from 1995-99. Holliday was a three-year letter-winner at linebacker at West Virginia (1976-78) and has earned both a bachelor’s degree (1979) and a master’s degree (1981) from WVU. He and his wife Diana have four children - Meghan, Cade, Chase and Cody.
