MISSION STATEMENTMy music magazine will give a unique insight into the music industry. My magazine will be
based on mixed genre music and will feature little sections on alternative artists. The
magazine will be aimed at an age group of 15 – 30, it will be aimed at both females and
males. The purchasers of the magazine would be regular music listeners and would have an
interest in live music and developing artists. The tone and attitude will also have a quirky and
edgy aspect to interest the younger readers. The magazine will be glossy, but it will also
include long publications with detailed content. The magazine will be released on a monthly
basis. The magazine will gain its readers and buyers by providing the latest up to date
mainstream charts, the latest information on popular artists, it will also include 1st person
interviews with developing artists as well as popular artists, it will give reviews of the latest
albums which will have a fun and relaxed attitude. There will be included, a list of downloads
and features. The magazine will also feature ‘gossip’ about well known artists and will provide
the latest entertainment news. There will also been features on fashion and merchandise.
From looking at my questionnaire, I can see that the most popular magazines
that people said they would read were Q, NME and Kerrang!. I have decided to
look at two of them to see what type of audience they attract.
Q MAGAZINE• Q’s audience is younger and more wealthy than any other music monthly. 72% are ABC1 and have high
disposable income.
• 97% of readers rate Q as a quality magazine. In research it outperforms competitors on measures such as best
interviews, writing and award winning photography.
• 63.8% of their audience is 15-24 years old.
• Q is a multi-media platform which attracts a wide rage of people to the brand.
NME MAGAZINE• NME’s target audience are 66% male, aged between 15 – 34, the average age is 24.
• 72% of their audience are ABC1. 55% work full time.
• 91% go to gigs regularly and are music enthusiasts.
• NME is a multi-platform, attracting a big audience.
• 36% of their audience are still studying in college or university. Also, there are young adults who are
starting their career.
• NME is now a free magazine and has now increased on the amount of adverts present.
By looking at the data from my questionnaire, I have decided that my music magazine will be a pop/indie/rap
music genre. I have decided to make a mood board on what reflects my target audience in this music genre.
I want to aim my magazine at the ages of 15-27, 50% female and 50% male. My target audience are regular music
listeners and love listening to music, they also like going to concerts/gigs. They are also into their fashion and this
fits perfectly into the music genre. My audience like to download and stream music onto their iPod/phones, but
also like listening to CDs and records.
