Early BeverleyThe Romans had manysettlement sites in EastYorkshire, centred aroundBrough, a port for the Romanfleet, or Malton, HQ for acavalry division. The nearestvilla to Beverley was at BishopBurton. Beverley itself seems tohave been an Anglo-Saxonfoundation.
The charismatic John, bishopof York, retired to a monasteryhe had founded ‘in the woodsof Deira’, died and was buriedthere in 721. His monastery, onthe south side of the presentminster, was probably in aclearing in woodland whichonce covered much of the area. The monastery had a lake tothe south, now Woodmansey.
John of Beverley’s life wasrecorded by Bede, first Englishhistorian. His tomb was thescene of many miracles, andpilgrims came a long way tovisit. From the pilgrims’ needs, the first settlement grew up; aprivileged place, with taxexemptions and a powerfulsanctuary.
When the great survey calledDomesday Book was written, the York entry covered severalpages, but Beverley isdisappointingly brief. ‘Beverley…was always free from the king’sgeld [tax]’ explains why: theking did not get taxes and was
not interested. It seemshowever to have been a largeand prosperous place, and thelarge wooded pastures arealready in the record.
The Middle AgesAll through the Middle AgesBeverley prospered, on asound ecclesiastical base.John’s Saxon minster wasreplaced by a Romanesqueversion under the Normans;after a disastrous fire in 1188 anew Gothic building wasbegun, completed in the 1390s.A new church, St Mary’s, wasbuilt at the north end of thetown. Friaries and hospitalssuch as St Giles came. Marketsbrought wealth, buying andselling wool, and foodstuffs.Goods came by road or upBeverley Beck, paying tolls tothe town. The town was neverwalled, but had bars, gates tocollect tolls, and a ditch whichcan still be seen to the west. The merchants organisedguilds for commercial andsocial purposes, and the guildor mystery plays of Beverleywere performed around thetown. The most exotic andunusual guild was that of theminstrels of northern England, commemorated in the NE pillarof the nave of St Mary’s church‘this pillar made [by] theminstrels’, and in the dozens ofmusical carvings in the Minster.

HistoricBeverley
16 - 17th CenturiesBeverley is still a medieval townin the shape of its core. Behindthe Georgian and Victorianfronts of buildings, there isoften a half timbered skeleton;see within the Guildhall. WhenJohn Leland visited circa 1540he wrote ‘the town is large andwell builded of wood…’.
The C16th saw the towncrashing from medieval wealthto early modern poverty. ThePilgrimage of Grace (1536) ledby Robert Aske was a seriousattempt to halt change. ButHenry VIII and his son Edward, demolished all the religioushouses and customs that keptBeverley rich. The cloth tradehad also declined. DuringElizabeth’s reign the town wasin dire straits. In response to adesperate plea, the Queengave the town a charter ofincorporation, an MP, andmany church properties. SoBeverley gradually climbed outof C16th depression to bebattered again by the EnglishCivil War. King Charles I withhis two sons, stayed in NorthBar House while he tried topersuade John Hotham tosurrender Hull. Armiesmarched through the town;soldiers were drilled in theMarket Place and there wereskirmishes on the Westwood.
Modern TimesAfter the uprisings of theC16th and C17th, the C18th was
a golden time for Beverley.Much of the town centre, stillits medieval shape, had thehouses rebuilt. Quartersessions, the races, assemblyrooms, theatre, andgentlemen’s clubs, broughtcounty families with goodspending power into the town.Beverley grew into the localgovernment centre which ithas remained ever since. Thefirst drawing of Beverley(c.1720 by Samuel Buck) fromthe Westwood shows a clusterof houses around a number oflarger buildings, the townhouses of the gentry.Beverley’s earliest map of 1747shows how the town hadgrown outside North Bar.
The railway came in the C19th,built on former church land(the Trinities of the KnightsHospitaller and the Dominicanfriary). In the C20th the ancientstreet pattern was affected bythe building of Lord RobertsRd, Champney Rd, Wylies Rd,Sow Hill Rd, New Walkergateand other road improvements. The town was for a long time‘protected’ from developmentby the commons, the airfield atLeconfield and poor drainageto the south and east; but inthe late C20th theserestrictions no longer applied. The Civic Society was formed in 1961 in response to a threatto demolish Ladygate and has taken an active interest in modern development ever since.
