A surprisingway to makespring cleaning simple

(Family Features) Wipingaway the grime of winterdoesn’t have to meanlaunching an attack withdangerous chemicals.

As you tackle this year’s springcleaning chores, take a note fromMother Nature and rely on thecleaning power of a surprisinglyeffective natural product: vinegar.

During the last century, vinegarhas become increasingly recog-nized as a low cost and eco-friendly household product. Fromcooking and canning, to cleaningitems indoors and out, homeown-ers are discovering that this eco-friendly, acetic liquid is asversatile as it is useful.

“Cleaning with vinegar has al-ways been an effective way tobanish dirt and grime in kitchens, bathrooms, the garage and theoutdoors,” said Mike Smith, exec-utive vice president of sales andmarketing at Mizkan Americas, the makers of Four Monks Clean-ing Vinegar.

Despite its strong cleaningpower, vinegar does have onedownfall: its distinctive odor. Youcan experiment with dozens ofDIY recipes online to overcomethis dilemma, or you can rely ona store-bought non-toxic cleaningvinegar such as Four Monks, which is made from a proprietary

process that reduces the strongaroma and leaves a clean, crispscent.

In the KitchenClean off the blades of a well-

worn can opener with an oldtoothbrush soaked with vinegarto help remove dirt and grease.

Clean your ice/water dispenserby running vinegar through thesystem. Flush the vinegar out byrunning water through the systemfor 30-60 seconds.

Rid your dishwasher of mineralbuildup by pouring half a cup ofvinegar into the reservoir andrunning an empty cycle. You canalso use vinegar in the dish-washer instead of another glasscleaner to keep your glasswaresparkling.

Renew sponges and dishragsby placing them in just enoughwater to cover them. Then addone-fourth cup of vinegar and letthem soak overnight.

Remove dark stains on an alu-minum pot by boiling two cups ofvinegar.

For stained and smelly plasticfood containers and lunchboxes, wipe them with a cloth dampenedwith vinegar.

To clean a grease-splatteredoven door window, saturate itwith vinegar. Keep the door openfor 10-15 minutes before wipingwith a sponge.

Deodorize the garbage dis-posal by pouring in half a cup ofbaking soda and half a cup ofvinegar. Let sit for five minutesthen run hot water down the dis-posal.

Avoid using toxic chemicalswhere you store food; wipe upspills in the fridge with vinegar.

In the BathroomRid a faucet of lime deposits by

tying a plastic bag containingone-third to one-half cup of vine-

gar around it and leaving it therefor two or three hours.

Wipe down with a sponge andscrub any remaining depositswith an old toothbrush. The sameapproach can be used to removebuildup on a showerhead.

The fizzing combo of vinegarand baking soda can unclog andremove odor from a tub drain.Pour half a cup of baking soda inthe drain, then follow with twocups of hot vinegar. Immediatelyplug the drain with a rag to keepthe bubbles contained for 10 min-utes.

Rinse by pouring a kettle ofboiling hot water down the drain.

Spray shower doors with vine-gar after you’ve squeegeed theglass – or before you turn on thewater – to help release hardwater deposits.

Clean shower door tracks byfilling them with vinegar and let-ting it sit for a few hours. Pourhot water into the tracks andscrub away any remaining filmwith a toothbrush.

To make the toilet bowl sparkle, pour in a cup or more of vinegarand let it sit for several hours orovernight. Scrub well with the toi-let brush and flush.

Remove old bathtub decalswith vinegar heated in the mi-

crowave. In the Laundry RoomRemove coffee and tea stains

by flushing the area with vinegar, rinsing and repeating. For winestains, saturate the spot withvinegar and allow it to stand forseveral minutes. Then, wash asnormal.

Tip: For more delicate fabricsor precaution, test on an incon-spicuous part of the garment first.

Restore yellowed clothing bysoaking garments overnight in asolution of 12 parts warm waterand one part vinegar. Wash themthe following morning.

Soak new garments in a fewcups of vinegar for 10-15 minutesbefore washing to stop dyes fromrunning in the wash.

If frequent ironing has left youriron plate dirty, make a pastefrom one part vinegar and onepart salt to scrub it clean.

Remove scorch marks from aniron by rubbing it with a warm so-lution of equal parts vinegar andsalt. If that doesn’t work, use acloth dampened with vinegar.

Forgot that you left wet laundryin the machine and it now smellsmoldy?

Pour a few cups of vinegar inthe machine and wash theclothes in hot water. Then run a

normal cycle with detergent torinse the clothes.

Prevent lint from clinging toclothes by adding half a cup ofvinegar to the wash cycle.

What Is Vinegar?Vinegar is the acetic liquid that

results when a product contain-ing sugar is allowed to ferment.Vinegar can be created fromnearly any product containingsugar; fruit and grains, such asbarley and corn, are commonsources of vinegar.

The ingredients in vinegar de-pend on the type of vinegar pro-duced. For example, Four Monksuses distilled vinegar processedfrom corn, so it’s safe for yourfamily. All vinegars are dilutedwith water to the preferred aciditybefore bottling. Four Monks has6 percent acidity, which is 20 per-cent stronger than traditionalvinegar, but gentle on everydaysurfaces.

This acetic quality is what en-ables vinegar to effectively cleanwhile being safe for the body andthe environment.

(Family Features)You’ve been taughtfrom childhood toturn off the lightswhen you leave aroom to save energyand money. Now, tech-nology is allowing home-owners to apply thoseyears of training to manag-ing energy consumption –and comfort – on a room-by-room basis throughoutthe house.

This new approach to manag-ing your home allows you to cus-tomize nearly every aspect of aroom’s environment independ-ently from other parts of thehouse, in some cases, evenwhen you’re miles away. You canadjust lighting, music and eventhe temperature using the righttechnology-enabled devices.

Options to create ambianceNothing sets a mood quite like

music. Your home audio systemmay be perfect when you’rehome alone, but when guests fillevery room, a more custom ap-proach is in order.

For example, the volume maybe louder to overcome the com-motion of the kitchen, while alower decibel provides a gentlebackdrop to conversation in theliving room. Where the kids arecongregated, you can play a dif-ferent soundtrack entirely.

Likewise, there are dozens ofreasons to change the lightingfrom room to room. Kids shufflefrom room to room and guestsgravitate to different parts of thehouse, or you may simply want togive the appearance that some-one is home when you’re on theroad.

These are all good reasons toexplore a system that lets youadjust your home’s lighting froma single location.

Zoned climate controlThe approach to heating and

cooling homes has evolved dra-matically through the years aswell.

Now, the latest technologymakes it possible to combine theadvantages of cooling and heat-ing systems with the benefits ofmore localized climate settings.Individualized zone control allowshomeowners to save moneywhile offering the flexibility to

choose which rooms they want tocool and heat.

“Cooling or heating unusedareas of your home means usingless energy,” said Mike Smith, senior marketing manager, resi-dential, Mitsubishi Electric US,Inc. Cooling & Heating Division.“By creating zones, homeowners

can feel confident that they arenot only saving money, but livingsmarter and more comfortably.”

Options, such as MitsubishiElectric’s zoned Diamond Com-fort System, create efficient,whole-home cooling and heatingsolutions, offering year-roundcomfort control room-by-room.

The whisper-quiet units alsofeature an anti-allergen filtrationsystem to reduce allergens, dust, pollen, viruses and bacteria inthe home. Learn more at Mit-subishiComfort.com.

Remote managementOne of the greatest advan-

tages of the new zoned approachto home management is the abil-ity to adjust each room remotely.Smartphones have taken thatfunction to a whole new level, with apps that let homeownerscontrol virtually any aspect of thehome from a remote location, whether down the hall or acrossthe country.

For example, the kumo cloudsmart controls app integrates

seamlessly with Mitsubishi Elec-tric systems allowing the home-owner to control the temperatureof each room in the house fromanywhere.

The tool takes pre-pro-grammed thermostats to a wholenew level with greater flexibility,

such as the ability to boost theheat when you’re home earlierthan planned. Learn more aboutthe app, which is also compatiblewith other devices, at Mit-subishiComfort.com.

Easy Ways to Manage Your Whole Home in Zones“Technology is allowing homeowners to apply thoseyears of training to managing energy consumption –and comfort – on a room-by-room basis throughoutthe house.”
