food recipe

• Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.

• In bowl, combine fruit spread, dried cherries and flour. In another bowl, combine sliced almonds, breadcrumbs, ground almonds, cinnamon and brown sugar.

• Lay one sheet of phyllo on baking sheet, keeping remaining phyllo sheets covered with a clean damp kitchen towel until ready to use. Brush phyllo with butter; sprinkle with one-sixth of the almond mixture. Repeat phyllo, butter and nut mixture layers, reserving a little butter, until all phyllo and nut mixture is used up.

• Using small offset spatula or the back of a spoon, spread cherry mixture evenly over top of phyllo layers, leaving a 1-inch (2.5 cm) border bare on all sides. Roll phyllo up lengthwise, jelly-roll style. Tuck ends underneath and brush seams with remaining butter. Place seam side down in the middle of prepared baking sheet. Using sharp knife, cut three equal slits across top of roll. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden and bubbling. Let stand 15 minutes. Sprinkle with icing sugar and slice crosswise on the diagonal to serve. THN

P A C K A B R A I N B O O S T I N G L U N C HPacking the right food for lunch can also play a role in boosting your child's brain power. Foods that contain poly-unsaturated fats are good for brain health and provide energy. If possible, try to slip avocados or pumpkin seeds into school lunches.

A D D O M E G A - 3 SF O R B R A I N H E A LT HThe long-chain omega-3 fats in fish oil have been shown to improve cognitive performance, including improved behaviour, memory, and reading. Getting the right amount of healthy fats during pregnancy and childhood has shown to have a number of benefits for children, including increased intelligence and visual acuity. Omega-3 supplements are available in different forms for children and adults.

D O N ' T F O R G E T A B O U T V I T A M I N DIn September, the days get shorter and back-to-school means more time indoors, both of which can lead to a decrease in vitamin D. Children and toddlers need vitamin D to absorb calcium and form strong teeth and bones. It has also been linked to increased immunity and disease prevention. Consider adding a vitamin D supplement formulated for children.

When adding supplements to your child's diet, it is always a good idea to speak with your health care practitioner. Visit chfa.ca for more information on how to help your child thrive and enjoy a healthy transition back to school this September. THN
