Since starting life in 2000 as part of UK-based online retailer,

Mobile Fun, we have overseen huge international expansion, a

multi-site Magento migration and the inception and establishment

of a new global brand.

We wanted to share that experience and expertise with other

ambitious businesses so, powered by retail success, we created

magic42.

Our experience as a retailer

Driving Magento innovationWe work exclusively with Magento, providing a differentiated

eCommerce experience, as we have done for our own retail

business.

As such, we have invested heavily in assembling a dynamic team of

Magento qualified Solution Specialists and Developers. Our

expertise helps our clients get the most out of Magento.

How we power retail success

Magento 2 has been rebuilt from the ground up, and incorporates a vast number of changes, upgrades and improvements over Magento 1. Some of these features are brand new to Magento 2, whilst many are evolutions of familiar tools.

Habits, ways of working and an acceptance of the status quo, can often mean inbuilt

Magento features that deliver what the business needs are often undiscovered. This

isn’t surprising with such a large number of options available. We often find our

clients aren’t aware of how powerful, and flexible, Magento can be in experienced

hands.

Example features re-imagined and brought over to Magento 2 include ‘back in stock

alerts, “only x left in stock” intelligent messages and tiered pricing, creating price

breaks on larger quantity orders.

We help our clients get more out of Magento, and have it do things that you may not

even know are possible. We can show you the functional difference between

Commerce and Open Source editions, without any hidden sales agenda, and our

Envision Workshop will created a roadmap of sales for your eCommerce site.

Re-explore Magento’s out-of-the-box functionality

New features to explore include the

upgraded payment options; Magento 2 now

features advanced Braintree (a PayPal

company) integration. This powerful

payment service can even be extended

quite simply, to give you the option of taking

Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal credit

payments. There’s also Klarna to offer

consumer credit, Amazon Pay and Multi Site

Inventory among many other new additions.

Moving to a newer platform brings with it the opportunity to revisit the the user

experience, especially with layered navigation. Should a drop-down be a

multi-select? Should some data be moved to its own attribute so it can be

strategically displayed on the product page? It can be frustrating not being able to

realise new opportunities with data as part of Business as Usual - a migration can

open the door to these changes, and many others.

Unlocking the value in your product data allows better segmentation of products

for Google Shopping Campaigns by custom labels such as product types, margins or

clearance status. Newer, more compelling visual layouts can also help to highlight

gaps with existing data. Were you displaying warranty information prominently on

your page? Perhaps it wasn’t populated for all products? Issues such as these can be

caught and rectified in the transition process.

Enhance yourproduct data

With an established eCommerce platform, it can be challenging to make wholesale changes to the data stored against products, often being bound by decisions made early on in the development of the platform or simply not having the dedicated time to do so.

A burning question for anyone considering a migration to Magento 2 is “how long will it take” and “how much will it cost?” Each website and business is unique, with different data, extensions and custom work that likely has evolved over a number of years.

A Magento 2 build requires

planning, design and

development in a number of

areas, however, to ease this

transition Magento have

provided a migration tool.

We’d suggest using the tool

early in the planning phase of

your project to find out how

easily your data will come

across and what

interventions will be needed.

If deployed in the Plan phase

of the project, important

information can be gleaned

to inform expectations and

decision making.

Use the Magento migration tool as part of your planning process to assess the work needed

Plan your URL strategy carefully

Ideally the URL changes should be minimised as part of the migration between platforms to limit risk and avoid organic traffic disruptions.

However, the process of

re-platforming can often lead to

opportunities to improve the

information architecture of your site,

where category structures are

reimagined and products reclassified

to improve the user experience as well

as to optimise and expand the site’s

footprint for Google.

The redirection process needs careful

planning to ensure broken links are

minimised, and that content isn’t just

removed from site. A lack of planning

and management can have a

devastating effect on site rankings and

traffic. The major aim here is to

eliminate all unnecessary disruption,

and ensure continuity and

performance between the two

platforms.

This doesn’t mean no changes to the

aforementioned can be made, just that

careful handling, through proper

application of 301 redirects and

graceful retiring of pages, is a must.

Re-evaluate offerings from the Magento community

Of the many reasons our clients choose to Magento as their platform for growth is the vast, innovative community around it working to improve and support the platform.

This community approach encourages innovation and invention, moving

eCommerce constantly forward, whilst keeping costs low. Some extensions can

offer fantastic value and development turn-around times or adding new

features to the customer experience, aiding the buying journey and encouraging

repeat business. Often a strong business cases can be created to use extensions

added to Open Source to replicate the features of the licensed versions of

Magento. The revamped Magento Marketplace, with tighter security and

quality controls, offers a world of possibilities.

Enhance your approach to Magento security

Magento have announced that they will not be offering any security support for Magento 1.x after June 2020, for this reason alone, now is the time to get your migration plan moving.

Moving over to Magento 2 allows you to take advantage of new tools and

features, and is a great opportunity to review your approach to securing your

eCommerce site. Magento 2 allows you to fully manage user roles and access

privileges, a great opportunity to review your user’s permissions and access.

There's also now two factor authentication, and Google’s Recaptcha to keep

your website safe and secure. Automated security scans from Magento can also

identify weaknesses like missing security patches and vulnerabilities.

With our knowledge we can help you devise a robust approach Magento 2

security.
