Week 1 Term 1 Thursday 2nd February
2017
1
Welcome to all new Staff
Dear families,
What a terrific start we have had to the year! We have had strong enrolments, our TV ad has generated a lot of great feedback, and people are still talking about the musical and how good it was. We expect to have the DVD ’s available late February – there is still time to get your orders in if you forgot last year.
We have decided to return to weekly newsletters, and these will usually be issued on Thursdays.
Last week the teachers were busy making preparations for the start of the year. We had a day at the golf club where I shared some vision and plans for the year, and some teaching to give shape to the year ahead.
A key idea was from Titus 2:6-8, which says to encourage the young to live wisely, to be an example to them by doing good works of every kind, and to let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. Teach the truth so that your teaching can’t be criticized.
Our leadership have been extremely busy setting up the details for the smooth start of the year. Mr Roger Moreton’s title is now Deputy Principal Secondary, and Mrs Sylvia Skinner’s title is now Deputy Principal Primary. Together we spent significant time reflecting on the past year, and have begun implementing plans to develop continuous improvement processes with our teaching staff. This involves teachers meeting in teams to review each other’s planning, and consider which best practice approaches they will use to refine and enhance the quality of teaching and learning.
The information nights we are conducting are intended to replace the interviews we normally have later in Term 1, however we also want to emphasise that we will be moving to different ways of reporting and relating to families through our online SEQTA system, and through regular contact.
We have made a surprising number of changes this year.
We relocated many lockers, especially away from the office admin area, and have ordered some new lockers with swipe card access – the Year 12’s will be able to use them soon. We mounted a large colourful work of art on the wall which was painted by a previous art teacher Mr Greg Judd. Mrs Skinner is already enlisting our senior art students to begin adding artistic flair to other parts of the College too.
The year 12’s have a new, much bigger ‘common room’ space in the Language Centre, and to make way for the second Foundation class, the Learning Support staff and services have been relocated to Room 4 – right near the front entry. Room 11 (ICT room) has been completely overhauled to be a brighter, better laid out and more flexible learning space.
We have purchased an 11 seater bus, which will be used to shuttle students from the southern routes between bus stops, and installed monitoring cameras to keep an eye on the grounds after hours. (continued Page 2)
From the Principal
Mid North Christian College is pleased to welcome 4
new teaching staff for 2017.
From Left: Miss Amber Enright is the new Foundation
Teacher who is teaching one of the 2 Foundation
classes, Secondary teacher Mrs Karin Hempenstall
will teach Psychology and English, Mr Nick Schild has
been appointed as Primary Specialist PE teacher and
Maths and Ms Hero Nelson is the new Year 6 teacher
this year.
We pray that all new staff and those who are return-
ing in new positions will be truly blessed in their
respective roles here at the College.
STAFF RETURNING TO NEW POSITIONS
Mrs Carey Wurst and Mrs Allison Clarke have returned to MNCC and will teach Music and Drama. Mrs Annette Burgan is teaching Senior English, Mrs Felicity
Collins returns as Year 2 Teacher and Mrs Tina Moreton is the Year 7 Core Teacher. Welcome back to all staff in new roles and positions. Please uphold all
our staff and students in prayer throughout this new and busy school year.
PRAYER FOR MID NORTH CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
Prayer is held each Monday at 9am in the Library. All Parents and Caregivers are welcome. For more information contact Mel Jaeger on 0478 616 475.
ATTENDANCE
We need to emphasise that full attendance is required for best outcomes. Please do everything you can to ensure a high quality of attendance. Our school
is audited every year for 3 terms, and our attendance averages are made publicly available. All students are expected to maintain an average of better
than 9 days per fortnight, including absences for illness and family reasons.
NEWSLETTER
This year we will endeavour to produce a weekly newsletter to have communication more streamlined. Items to be included in the newsletter are required
to be submitted by 4pm each Wednesday to [email protected] Where families have indicated on this year’s forms that they wish to have
newsletters emailed to them, this will be set up in due course.
COMMUNICATION
If you use Facebook, please ‘Like’ the Mid North Christian College - Port Pirie page and receive notifications of College posts to keep informed of happenings
and updates.
BREAKFAST CLUB
Breakfast Club is on Wednesdays at the College. Breakfast runs from 8.00am to 8.35am in the Home Economics area. Warm toast is available and a variety
of cereals as well as hot milo. Week 2, 6 and 11 will be Pancakes.
2016 MAGAZINE
The 2016 Vision Magazine is currently still in production and we are awaiting its completion and delivery. Distribution to families of 2016 will occur when
the magazines arrive, but this could still be a few weeks away.
ENCOUNTER DVDs
The DVDs of the MNCC ‘Encounter’ Musical and Primary performance are also in the process of being produced. Families who have placed orders will be
notified when the DVDs become available.
SUPPLEMENTARY PE RUGBY JUMPER
Parents and caregivers would have received a notice/order form for the non-compulsory supplementary PE jumpers. Please note that we have sample sizes
of these jumpers in the front office. It would be advisable for parents of those ordering jumpers to try them for size as some have concluded that they are
a ‘small make’ and are ordering a size larger. If jumpers are required, please return your order forms to the College by next Friday 10th February. Please
make payments when jumpers are collected from the front office.

school at 3:15 in Room 9/10.
CARNIVAL BOOK FAIR
Carnival Book Fair this year in Week 6, March 6-10, to be held in the library. More details to come later.
The ICT portable device plan is definitely going ahead, but we will use this year as an evaluation year. Year 3 students will be issued with a class set of iPads, and year 11 and 12 students will be able to use a College supplied laptop for classes at school. Families will not be expected to contribute to the cost of devices. Additional Wi-Fi points are being installed around the College, and we have improved the quality of internet service.
The College Board have received the report summary from the Endeavour consultation surveys conducted late last year, and are extremely encouraged by the survey results. They have also short listed architects to partner with us to prepare our Master site plan, and inform our strategic planning.
We have also implemented tighter expectations for quality of assignments, and in keeping with SACE requirements High School students have been told that they will receive a ‘0’ for late assignments. This may seem harsh, but we do need to draw a line to develop a culture in our students that takes deadlines seriously, and plans responsibly.
Respected academic researcher John Hattie has identified ‘Visible Learning’ as a key element of high performing schools. This approach is all about making sure that students and families are clearly informed as to what is expected for effective learning. You will see we are providing clear information about our learning, routines and expectations now, and throughout the year.
We are having a ‘dedication service’ on Sunday 12th February, 2pm at the New Life Church, 162 Three Chain Road.
The year has started exceptionally well. The new students have transitioned smoothly, there is a positive and productive ‘buzz’ of activity, and the changes have translated into strong improvements. Very exciting!

BINS AND THEIR USE - An Important Reminder from the College Groundsmen
A reminder to all students and MNCC community about the use of the bins in and around the College:
The Green bins are for food waste, empty wrappers, fruit waste etc.
Please do not put any of the follow ing in these green bins: damaged items from your classrooms, glass, wood,
no A4 paper or books, no boxes, no printer cartridges. These bins are for lunch and recess times for students.
Blue bins are for used drink containers - NOTHING ELSE.
The White skip bin near containers across from the back of Room 16 are for cardboard boxes,
paper, old books and NOTHING ELSE. Please flatten all boxes as costs are higher when emptied if
they haven't been flattened.
All other hard waste goes in the large blue skip bin in the staff car park.
Keeping to these rules helps ensure the college is clean and hygienic. It also prevents mishaps when
bins are being emptied e.g. broken glass, nails sticking through bag liners, as well as prevents over
filling bins through boxes being placed in wrong bins. Please don’t create extra work and double handling
when bins have to be emptied and contents need to be sorted out.
Teachers, parents and caregivers please pass this information to your students. We can work together for a cleaner
neater, tidier and more efficient school.
