Walking from Camden to Menangle Park yesterday, vice-president of the Kangaroo March Centenary Association, Rhondda Vanzella, described the 35-day 524km re-enactment of a WWI recruitment march as an epic experience. “It was full of emotion as people shared not only their family stories, but also their own stories about how they felt about marching.” KANGAROO MARCH EPIC EXPERIENCE Kangaroo March at Picton POLICE have struck back against car thieves in a “shock and awe” operation in the early hours of Friday morning. Officers swarmed three homes at about 6am, thought to house serial car thieves, and arrested a 17-year-old Ashmont boy as he tried to flee a Callaghan Street address. The teen, a suspect in the theft of aVolkswagen from aWagga home this week, was charged with a raft of offences and will front Wagga Children’s Court on a date to be fixed. It comes amid a spate of car thefts across the city. COPS STRIKE BACK AT CAR THIEVES WAGGA on Friday looked the picture – and was also part of the picture thanks to popular daytime cooking show Alive and Cooking. Celebrity chef James Ree- son was shown the culinary delights of the region at the city’s Food I Am cooking school, with an episode of the visit set to be broadcast across Australia. “We were really thrilled. It’s a great showcase of what we’re doing in the Riverina and our facility here,” Food I Am’s Tania Sibrey said. “e show has quite a big following, so it’s a really great way of highlighting the cook- ing school and the region’s producers to more than just Riverina people.” Cameras walked through the Springvale property and a live audience watched the team serve up a treat. e episode will air on the WIN Network in coming months. Picture: Laura Hardwick Brazen thieves nab war medals A MAN whose house was ransacked and robbed of precious war medals has issued an emotional public appeal to thieves to return them for the sake of his grandchildren. e brazen theft has emerged as another pow- erful symbol of the city’s problem with repeated break-and-enters – and it re- veals the ugly aftermath that victims of crime are forced to endure after being targeted. Wagga man John Price is now considering his future in the city and said the rob- bery at the long weekend is the final “nail in the coffin” for him. He was in disbelief. e medals belonged to his father and were awarded for his service to Australia during World War II. Other medals dated back to the 1920s and were for sporting achievements in the boxing ring and on the foot- ball field, and also included recognition for his work with Rotary. Remarkably, family photos were also stolen. ey were contained in a simple brown box under his bed, but they pieced together a lifetime of memories for Mr Price. “e medals are part of my family’s history,” he said. “ey should be passed onto my grandchildren. ey are worthless to other people, but priceless to my family. “ey are irreplaceable.” Mr Price was just one of 20 homes and cars that were targeted across Wagga on the long weekend. Sitting in a near-empty house that had its windows smashed, the Wagga man spoke of his disbelief and anger at the string of attacks. “What I have to say about it you couldn’t print,” he said. “You feel like your privacy has been disrupted – they need to do something there is more to this than just my case.” Earlier this week, Wagga Local Area Commander Su- perintendent Bob Noble im- plored people to remain vig- ilant in the warmer months when windows are typically left open for ventilation. “A trend of late has been home owners leaving a door unlocked complacently and thieves strolling in and tak- ing what they want,” he said. “Often thieves will look for keys, car or house keys. ey will then come back later and let themselves back in and have their way and/or steal your car and commit further offences in it.
