children (9-12 years old) facing the difficult challenges associated with an addicted or co-dependent family member.

Children exposed to and affected by substance abuse are at greater risk than their peers to suffer from problems such as depression and anxiety, physical health challenges and learning problems; three times more likely to be abused, four times more likely to be neglected, and face four times the risk of developing substance abuse issues. What better way to celebrate the end of summer, the beginning of another school year and season than reviewing our youth services? JFCS is committed to the future of our youth. We believe that prevention and intervention services can

spare a child from taking or following a misguided path and significantly reduce the negative impact on our community; fiscally, socially, and criminally. The best part is we know our youth services are making an impact and touching the lives of so many children – giving them the tools to become successful and self-sufficient!

Through our free summer enrichment programs we provided a safe and caring, learning environment for 49 children. These children were taken on field trips and exposed to numerous industries showing them they can have a bright future and fulfill their dreams; maybe as a first responder, marine biologist, doctor, or nurse. They also gained social and behavioral skills allowing them to be leading examples for their peers.

With your support, we also helped 150 children return to school with confidence. Each student was provided with a lunch bag and $35 gift card towards the purchase of a new uniform or outfit. An additional 50 children were provided backpacks full of school supplies they would not have been able to afford. The children and families are still expressing their gratitude, which we post in our front lobby and online to share with you.

Last school year, 676 students at five local schools received counseling and prevention services - 99% indicated that they learned how to handle their problems thanks to JFCS. And since 2003, JFCS has ensured that 9,531 children remained with their families in safe, affordable housing through our Building Strong Families Homelessness Prevention Program.

We hope you’ll take a moment to read through the services we’re providing and join us in our efforts to empower the youth of our community. Learn how we’re making an impact and how you can help us by offering your time, advocacy, or financial support.

As we prepare to celebrate High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we want to take this opportunity to personally wish you and your family a healthy and happy New Year!

L’Shana Tova!

Spotlight ON Volunteers

Nina Gitomer’s concept of being retired doesn’t include slowing down. Taking on three volunteer assignments at JFCS may

occupy much of her time, but in comparison to the weekly flights from Tampa to her office in L.A. for 10 years prior to retirement, it’s just a few hours spent for a great reward. She shares her volunteer hours with JFCS’ programs that afford her direct client contact where she can see and feel the impact she makes on those in need.

In addition to working with seniors, Nina annually mentors 2 or more children enrolled in JFCS’ “Emma’s Dream Team” at Emma E. Booker Elementary School. This program provides counseling, prevention and sensory services to “at-risk children” due to challenges they face that may interfere with their academic and social success. Additionally, children have the option of meeting with a volunteer mentor once a week. Having no biological children of her own, Nina found this volunteer opportunity a perfect way to express her love for children while helping JFCS provide services to those in need. Nina says she’s always been “struck by the gap between extreme wealth and poverty” and feels “kids still deserve to be children, even if only for 30 minutes per week.” So, she gives these children undivided attention when asking about what they’ve learned in class, playing games and/or doing activities that they enjoy.

Nina shares that coming every week really helps to build trust between them, and that the joy on their faces with raised fist pumping “YES!” as they see her walking toward them, really makes it all worth while. Patience and persistence are two key attributes required to work with these at-risk children. Allowing them to make mistakes, focusing on the behavior rather than the child, and always remembering that as a mentor you may be the only consistent, caring adult in the child’s life helps Nina stay focused on what is really important. Nina’s children see someone who cares and forgives, holds them to strict standards, and practices what

Nina Gitomer: Making a Positive iMPactshe talks about by being a role model in different situations. And, when there are tears, there are hugs to help ease the pain.

When asked to share how she measures the impact she makes, she tells a story of a young boy she mentored who often expressed to her his difficulties living with his grandparents and siblings, as well as issues he experienced at school. Struggling to learn how to articulate and how to work through his feelings of frustration with a substitute teacher, this boys’ behavior escalated to the point of him being temporarily

removed from class. Nina helped him examine his feelings, along with the behavior that resulted in the additional frustration of being separated from his classroom. She then simply posed the question, “What could you have done differently?” By allowing the boy to use her as a sounding board, he eventually realized that better choices lead to better results. With encouragement from Nina, he shared his feeling and apologized to the substitute teacher for his behavior, which allowed him to return to his class. This child’s personal triumph is how Nina Gitomer measures her impact as a volunteer at JFCS.

Nina spent her career helping other people – assisting those injured at work to get back on their feet and helping employees of her company settle in and learn how to do their jobs better. While realizing that these jobs were important, Nina never felt any of these things really made a difference. Seeing the JFCS clients and having the JFCS staff help her understand their needs has allowed Nina to do what she considers the most meaningful “work” of her life. Only 27% of youth have a positive, adult role model in their lives! Consider volunteering as a mentor or tutor and JFCS will provide you with comprehensive training and identify an accommodating schedule. Contact Sheri Weiss, director of volunteers and community outreach at 941-366-2224, ext. 143 or e-mail [email protected]

Imagine a young boy caught stealing snacks from his classroom not because he’s hungry but because he wants to take it home to his siblings

who don’t have the privilege of a free school meal.At JFCS, we partner with the schools and other

community agencies to understand the needs of at-risk youth and provide prevention and intervention resources. Without the availability of JFCS services, statistics indicate we would have a higher percentage of children:

n Dropping out of school

n Suspended or expelled

n With undiagnosed learning disabilities

n Exposed to or committing crimes

n Homeless and/or placed in foster care

The Safe Alternative to Out-of-School Suspension Program (SATOSS) provides services to at-risk youth at Booker, Heron Creek and McIntosh Middle Schools in Sarasota County, and Lincoln Middle in Manatee County. Students receive individual, group, and family counseling from JFCS mental health counselors’ onsite and if appropriate, are matched with trained volunteer mentors and/or tutors.

The Parent Advocacy program is an extension of Booker Middle School’s SATOSS program and adds an important and innovative component by engaging parental involvement. Parents receive education and support, and are involved with the services provided to their children to prevent out of school suspension or involvement in the juvenile justice system.

JFCS also sponsors Emma’s Dream Team (EDT) at Emma E. Booker Elementary School, a Title I school. Emma’s Dream Team provides counseling services to improve coping and social skills, reduce disruptive behavior and out-of-school suspension for at-risk elementary school students. However, Emma’s Dream Team is unique in its delivery of services; focusing on prevention and intervention of behavioral issues;

and special sensory approach of redirecting students physically and emotionally through skill acquisition that helps them maintain self-control in the classroom.

Mentors and Tutors are matched with JFCS clients to provide guidance and positive adult role modeling to support the children with academic challenges and to avoid out of school suspension. Mentoring and tutoring also helps reduce disruptive behaviors, fosters positive social interactions and relationships, improves communications skills, and increases motivation to pursue further education.

The Summer Enrichment Program involves youth ages 5-14. Students receive life and social skills, career education, and cultural awareness at both Emma E. Booker Elementary and Lincoln Middle School. In addition, they are taken on field trips and offered the opportunity to hear speakers, play games, do arts and crafts, and participate in activities that help improve self-esteem and build positive relationships.

The Adolescent Diversion & Assistance Program (ADAP) is for youth, ages 11-17, who have been arrested in Sarasota County and/or involved in:

n Domestic violence

n Gang-related activity

n Shoplifting/Stealing

n Battery/Assault

n Substance Abuse

n Criminal Mischief/Trespass

n or generalized violent behaviors, including bullying

Using multiple group and individual counseling sessions, youth learn new skills and replacement behaviors that will reduce the risk of repeating such destructive conduct and prevent future involvement with the juvenile justice system. This year 90% of program participants 6 months post-graduation have not engaged in criminal behavior that would result in Department of Juvenile Justice involvement.

Thanks to the support of so many and those still donating, JFCS has been able to help more than a hundred kids this year start back to school with a little more confidence.

Within 48 hours of launching a Gulf Coast Gives campaign, we raised enough funds to provide 150 at-risk youth with a new lunch bag and a $35 gift card to purchase a new outfit.

Individual donors and volunteers also donated back packs stuffed with school supplies. Additional campaigns raising funds and/or the donation of supplies included:

• Church of the Revelation, Pastor Devon Jarrett

• Condo Managers Association – Stress Relievers

• Temple Emanu-El Social Action Committee

JFCS Helps Community Youth with Back-to-School Campaigns

As heartbreaking as it is to report, the truth of the matter is we still have children who are without or with limited health insurance coverage and no access to immediate mental health

services. Consequently, JFCS and The Florida Center for Early Childhood have partnered to provide a team that responds when a child is in crisis and needs services.

Available 24/7 to Sarasota County residents, the Children’s Crisis Team will provide services at the home, in the community, or in school for children experiencing a mental health crisis and at risk of harming themselves or others, as well as children who have been discharged from a Baker Act facility with no immediate access to mental health services aftercare, at risk of pre-school/school expulsion, or at risk of a more restrictive home or school placement.

This includes children between the ages of 9 and 17 displaying symptoms and behaviors such as suicidal or homicidal statements or

threats, self-inflicted non-suicidal self-injuries, exposure to traumatic events, crying excessively, and the like.

Providing true crisis services, the Children’s Crisis Team services include emergency stabilization, short-term counseling and short-term case management for financial, medical, housing assistance, or

other identified child and/or family needs. Additionally, The Children’s Crisis Team links the child and their family to community mental health resources and referrals as needed.

Funded by Central Florida Behavioral Health Network for 3 years to provide services for 90 children per year, who have been identified as at risk for harm to themselves or others, the Children’s Crisis Team has already served more than 128 children since September 2014. JFCS hopes to continue this program and

team indefinitely as there is clearly a need within the community. To make a referral to the Children’s Crisis Team, call 941-374-3213.
