Missouri Women’s Business Center Jaime Freidrichs is the Director of the Missouri Women’s Business Center (MoWBC). The MoWBC is a program of the Central Missouri Community Action and serves as a catalyst for economic development in the Columbia community by providing resources, support and networks for women seeking to start or grow their own businesses. They provide classes, workshops, networking opportunities, individualized business counseling and microlending. They serve eight area counties: Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Moniteau and Osage. The MoWBC was created thanks to a five-year grant received from the Office of Women’s Business Ownership. The program officially began on June 1, 2016. The funds help with costs, but Jaime noted local partners that had been instrumental in helping MoWBC. The MoWBC offers one-to-one business counseling services and workshops that can help women with their small business needs. They pride themselves on meeting women where their needs exist. This may involve creating a new business plan or revising an old one. This practice has proven to be successful, and can also be expanded to help connect the women with additional resources or additional entrepreneurs who may be able to assist. Jaime noted three areas of challenges that exist: (1)the geographic area served; (2) funding; and (3) promotion/marketing of the MoWBC. Jaime concluded by sharing three success stories. One involved a painting company, another related to a local chiropractor, and the third was a not-for-profit after school program. The Missouri Women’s Business Center is a small staff of devoted individuals who are dedicated to assisting local women. If you would like to volunteer your time and/or resources, please contact Jaime at 573.777.5236 or visit them online at www.mowbc.org.

Sergeant Jaime tested members with October trivia. Members not knowing that October is Women’s Small Business Month were given the opportunity to contribute to Metro’s charities.
