Welcome to the start of our 2015/16 season. As a theatre dedicated to telling great stories by great storytellers, I have long wanted to produce Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses, for this piece is at its essence a celebration of storytelling. I went to college with Mary Zimmerman and have loved following her extraordinary work over the years. Throughout her career, she has been drawn to ancient texts and stories based in the oral tradition, stories such as The Odyssey and The Arabian Nights (which the Arden produced

in 2004). She is a singular artist: fiercely intelligent, deeply inquisitive, surprisingly irreverent. She has described herself as an archeologist, dusting off these tales so that their true shape — their full power — comes to the stage, continually asking the question, “Why has this story lived for so long and why does it want to keep on living?” What is also remarkable is that Mary finds the contemporary in these ancient texts. Most significantly, she has a deep and powerful belief in the power of stories to connect us with our shared humanity — and ourselves. I am thrilled to welcome Doug Hara as the director of this production. Doug first appeared at the Arden as Owen in our 2006 production of A Prayer for Owen Meany and has, since then, become an important force in the Philadelphia theatre community. Doug has a long-standing relationship with Mary Zimmerman and appeared in the original production of Metamorphoses. He has spent many hours in this beautiful pool, and it’s been inspiring to watch him lead the creation of this new production. I love this piece. It reminds me of why I love going to the theatre — and of the power and possibility of storytelling. Great stories bring us together, whether we gather around a fire, a kitchen table, or, in this case, 2,600 gallons of water. And so together, we dive into a new season. Enjoy.

My thanks to our subscribers for joining us for this season. Your faith and investment makes our work possible. If you haven’t yet subscribed, please consider doing so. The season includes a thrilling new play about the Bard, a world premiere by one of Philadelphia’s leading playwrights, a masterwork by August Wilson, and a soaring musical. Great stories all. Join us.

STILL TO COME IN

THE ARDEN’S 2015/16 SEASONMetamorphoses tells stories of transformation. Looking ahead, the notion of change and transformation runs throughout our 2015/16 season:

Equivocation is a new play based on The Gunpowder Plot, an attempt to assassinate King James I by blowing up the House of Lords. In Equivocation, William “Shagspeare” (playwright Bill Cain’s favorite spelling of the famous playwright’s name) is commissioned by the crown to write a play telling the official version of the plot. Equivocation follows Shag’s attempt to figure out what actually transpired and how to write the history of an event he doubts ever took place. The play is a valentine to the theatre (think Shakespeare in Love) and also a political thriller. A thrilling play that is theatrical and suspenseful and brim-ming with the joy of creation. You can learn more about this play later in this stagebill, where we have provided a more detailed description of the plot.

Bruce Graham is one of Philadelphia’s leading playwrights, with a gift for creating extraordinary characters and sharp writing and often very funny dialogue. With Funnyman, Bruce has created Chick Sherman – an aging vaudevillian star who’s found fame and fortune making people laugh, but whose career has been reduced to doing shtick for television commercials. And then Chick’s long-time agent Junior brings him an offer: to appear in an avant-garde absurdist play in a shabby Off-Broadway theatre. Chick is a star; he’s never even been to an off Broadway production; and he doesn’t understand this avant-garde play (the play Chick is being offered is inspired by the plays by Samuel Beckett; audience members who were puzzled by our production of Endgame might relate to his plight). Funnyman poignantly and powerfully depicts one man’s struggle to remain relevant, valued – and still funny.

Two Trains Running is set in 1969 and takes place in a small restaurant owned by Memphis Lee in the Hill District of Pittsburgh. At the top of the play, Sterling, a young man who grew up in the neighborhood and has recently been released from prison, shows up. Unlike the others who frequent the restaurant, Sterling is excited by the possibilities of change, energized by a rally for racial justice commemorating the birthday of Malcolm X that is soon to be held, and determined to make his way in the rapidly changing world. Though set against the backdrop of the late 1960’s, the contemporary resonances of Two Trains Running are striking. As a critic for Chicago Sun Times recently wrote: “While all of Wilson’s plays may be loosely pegged to a historical moment, what is most remarkable about listening to this one is just how much of it sounds as if it had been penned at this very moment.” The cast will include Johnnie Hobbs, Jr. as Memphis Lee. Johnnie, who was in Blue Door and The Whipping Man at the Arden, is one of Philadelphia’s leading actors and will receive this year’s Barrymore Award for Lifetime Achievement.

The Secret Garden is a musical with great heart and a thrilling and beautiful score. We will bring together some of Philadelphia’s finest musical theatre performers for this production, including Jeff Coon (George in Sunday in the Park); Alex Keiper (Petra, A Little Night Night Music); and Elisa Matthews (Johanna, Sweeney Todd). These artists have the ability to make this score sing: Alex will shake the rafters of the Haas belting out “Move On.” Elisa will make you cry with the soaring “How Could I Ever Know?” And Jeff Coon was born to sing these songs. The Secret Garden is a gorgeous story that celebrates new beginnings and a great musical with which to end our 2015/16 season.

DIRECTOR’S NotesWhat do I want to read about a play before it begins? Ideally, very little. I have come for a story, and the artists assembled are about to tell me one. That is enough. Turn off the lights and let’s go.

But…I do have one thought to offer you. There is one basic fact about this play that has amazed me ever since I performed in the first production 17 years ago, and every time it returns to me my astonishment is undiminished. I offer it to you here in capital letters because whenever I think these words I feel as if I am shouting them in my own head:

THESE STORIES WERE WRITTEN DOWN MORE THAN 2000 YEARS AGO.(And that does not include the unknown number of years they had existed before then, and were passed down orally through the generations.)

Please let that sink in.

8 A.D.

That is the year they were put on parchment by a 51 year old poet named Publius Ovidius Naso. (In that same year the man we now call Jesus Christ was a 13-year old boy. The New Testament would not be put in ink for another 100 years.) And, somehow, miraculously to my mind, these most ancient of ancient myths are still familiar, relevant, and wholly affecting in 2015 A.D. We recognize these people. They are immediate and present in our minds. These people are us.

Now I am not a scholar. I cannot put these stories in any illuminating context with the generations of literature that have come since. But if these foundational myths are the bedrock from which all of western literature has sprung, then perhaps, in some basic sense, we have simply been telling the same stories over and over for 2000+ years, dressing them in different robes and colors. Can we not, in the end, draw a satisfactory line from Ovid, to Shakespeare, to the Brothers Grimm, to Toni Morrison, to J.K. Rowling? This may sound reductive or even profane, but I don’t think I’m too far from the truth of it. Love. Loss. Transformation. Rinse and repeat. I find this thread, this connection, this familiarity with the ancient incredibly moving and inspiring.

The only other thing I want to say is that my direction owes much to Mary Zimmerman and her extraordinary vision, her original production, and the score or more of cast members I have been honored to perform this play with over the years from the first production in 1998 to the recent revival in 2012/13. I have borrowed from them all without shame.

This Arden production contains the signature artistry of amazing new designers, actors, and technicians. All of us have assembled to tell you some stories.

I hope you enjoy them.

EquivocationUP NEXT ON THE ARDEN STAGE:

What’s Equivocation about?

It’s London, 1606. William Shakespeare (in the play spelled Shagspeare, or Shag) has just been made an offer he can’t refuse: King James I wants him to write a play about the recently foiled Gunpowder Plot. Shagspeare is leery: it’s dangerous for playwrights to write about current events. Robert Cecil, the king’s ruthless chief advisor, gives Shag the sanitized version of events, telling him to just add some dialogue — and witches. The king wants witches. The rest of Equivocation is about Shagspeare’s struggle to write a play that will please — or at least not offend — the king.

Shagspeare, like any good writer, is working on more than one play at once — specifically Macbeth and King Lear. And, of course, the themes from those works can’t help but invade his commission for the king — as well as those of Equivocation. The word equivocation means, “A statement that is not literally false but that cleverly avoids an unpleasant truth” or, as Father Garnet says in the play, a way “to speak the truth in difficult times.”

Simply put, the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a failed assassination attempt by a group of English Catholics against King James I. The plot intended to kill the king and most of the Protestant aristocracy by blowing up the Houses of Parliament on November 5, 1605. But, as we all know too well, politics and history are never simple. Although Robert Catesby (who is a character in Equivocation) led the plot, there is another name that has gone down in history: Guido (aka Guy) Fawkes who was recruited to execute the plan due to his military background. He was caught while guarding the gun powder. More than 400 years later, British children still roam the streets in the days leading up to Guy Fawkes Day (November 5) carrying effigies known as “Guys” and asking passers-by for a “penny for the guy.” Also known as Bonfire Night, families gather to celebrate the defeat of Fawkes and his other conspirators with fireworks, childish rhymes (see below) and bonfires.

Remember, remember the Fifth of November, the Gunpowder Treason and Plot, I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason should ever be forgot.

King James I was first King James VI of Scotland, rising to power at the ripe old age of 13 months. He became King of England and Ireland in 1603, succeeding Elizabeth I, the last of the Tudors (like that HBO series). He then ruled the kingdom of England, Scotland, and Ireland for 22 years, often using the title King of Great Britain, until his death at the age of 58.

When Bill Cain began writing Equivocation in 2004, he steeped himself in 16th and 17th century England, but contemporary concerns couldn’t help but creep in—the search for WMDs, Abu Ghraib, and the two wars. “There are many, many questions [from 17th-century England] identical to the invasion of Iraq,” recalls Cain. “And that was a big motive for writing the play. It was about seeing this stuff and going, ‘Wait a minute. We’ve got plenty of people dying over there and we’re killing people by the tens of thousands, based upon what was a lie.’”

Everything was going swimmingly for the Arden Theatre Company as its gala evening was beginning... and it ended with an exhilaration no one could have planned.

The Arden was presenting its first-ever Master Storyteller Award to the master of the American musical, Stephen Sondheim. At Zahav restaurant, Sondheim and about 80 others were dining on lamb and a selection of appetizers....Back at the Arden on Second Street, people were beginning to file in early for a concert that would honor Sondheim with 30 performers and presenters, a 14-piece orchestra and a post-concert reception....Everyone was dressed. Back-stage. Ready.

And then, powerless. Just before 7, an electrical outage hit a portion of Old City. People filed into an Arden lobby suddenly illuminated by only the dwindling daylight and a few candles...

Live theater can be exciting because anything can happen, but exciting was probably not the word that came to mind when associate artistic director Matthew Decker placed a call to producing artistic director Terrence J. Nolen and his wife, managing director Amy L. Murphy, both dining with Sondheim and the donors...

There’d be no time for a full concert, and with no electricity, plans would have to be revamped quickly. Decker and Nolen immediately began cutting the concert in half, over the phone....The orchestra was sent home. So were the artists whose numbers were no longer to be done. In the Arden lobby concert-goer Betsy Oliphant contacted Amy Murphy at Zahav. “I texted, ‘Tell me what I can do to help,’” Oliphant said. She texted back: “Pray.”

Meanwhile, the Arden staff scrambled to set up a new venue — the stage company’s large scene shop in its education building several doors north on Second Street, where the power was unaffected. They had to remove worktables and equipment, set up a stage and rearrange as much as they could to make space...

...Murphy entered the Arden and announced to the crowd below: “It’s not the event that was beautifully staged ... but we will have as great an event as humanly possible...” “The show must go on!” someone hollered from the audience, and a noisy cheer went up.

From that point, everything seemed remarkably organized... Members of the Arden staff found flashlights and lined Second Street every few yards so they could guide concert-goers through the rain and to the scene shop. More staffers directed people inside the building. At 9 p.m., an hour late, Nolen took to the stage and looked out over an audience sitting under industrial fluorescent lights — Sondheim in the front and two-by-fours, scraps of building materials, and other set-building implements lining the sides.

“Our mission is to tell great stories by great storytellers, and that mission hasn’t changed,” he said. “The most perfect recipient of our first master storytelling award is Stephen Sondheim...He has shown us how an entire story can be told in a single song — and in a single line.”

...Sondheim, a young-looking 85, told the audience that if he were running a gala and concert “and the lights went out and the electricity stopped, I would be hysterical. Terry Nolen was not. And that’s just one reason you should support the Arden. It’s in good hands.”

“I want to thank you all for supporting this wonderful organization that does great work. I would go on, but I would start to cry,” said the winner of eight Tony Awards, an Academy Award, a Pulitzer Prize and others, including his newest from the Arden. After the hour-long concert, the crowd — buoyed by being part of a night of surprises both planned and not planned — walked back to the Arden’s main building, now re-electrified, for a reception.
