WELCOMEfrom the Producing Artistic Director

Welcome to our production of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera.

I love that at the Arden, we are able to produce such a wide range of work. Currently running upstairs on the Arcadia Stage is the world premiere production of Michael Hollinger’s Ghost-Writer. This new play tells the story of a woman who works as a typist; its music is Michael’s language and the keys of the typewriter. The Threepenny Opera is a sprawling story about the mores and values of an entire society; it’s an epic tale brought to life by a cast of 17, an orchestra of 8 and a crew to match. In some ways these two very different projects represent the great range of stories we are privileged to bring to life on our two stages (Ghost-Writer runs thru November 7 if you haven’t yet seen it).

Next up on the Haas Stage is The Borrowers, an adaptation of the classic children’sstory by Mary Norton about a family of very small people who live under thefloorboards, to be directed by Whit MacLaughlin. Later in this season, we willproduce plays by two Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwrights, Eugene O’Neilland Tracy Letts; a new play by Rogelio Martinez; and our first commissionedproject for Arden Children’s Theatre, a new musical based on Hans ChristianAndersen’s The Flea and the Professor by Jordan Harrison and Richard Gray.

In 2009/10, we presented seven productions, held 458 performances and reached an audience of more than110,000 people. The broad range of work we produce, from new plays and musicals to premieres and children’s theater, is part of our success and allows us to constantly expand our artistic reach.

Thank you for joining us for The Threepenny Opera. This promises to be an extraordinary season at the Arden. I hope you will continue to be a part of it.

The Threepenny Opera has a rich and storied history. Like Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, Brecht and Weill’s Threepenny is something of a hybrid. It is based on John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, a play with songs originally produced in 1728 and subsequently adapted and revived in London in the 1920’s to great success. It was that production that drew the interest of Elisabeth Hauptmann, Bertolt Brecht’s secretary and lover, who translated it into German. Around that time, Brecht received a commission from a novice producer in Berlin to write a new play for the opening of his theatre. Deciding to work from Hauptmann’s translation, and using lyrics from several poems he had previously published or used in several of his past plays (including a poem by Rudyard Kipling), Brecht enlisted a young composer, Kurt Weill, to write an original score. On August 31, 1928, The Threepenny Opera opened at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, and was an immediate sensation. Within a year, there had been 4,200 performances in theatres across Europe and, by 1933, when Brecht and Weill were forced to flee Germany due to the rise of Hitler, The Threepenny Opera had been translated into 18 languages and performed over 10,000 times. Shortly thereafter, the Nazis banned The Threepenny Opera as degenerate art.

The American premiere of the then titled 3-Penny Opera was in 1933 at Philadelphia’s Garrick Theatre located at 130 Chestnut Street. The show opened to mostly favorable reviews. My favorite is Linton Martin’s of The Philadelphia Inquirer that stated: “Some mock-apprehensive souls declared they expected the patrol wagon to back up any minute and let ladies and children in first…As the saying goes, ‘Don’t take the kiddies.’” Though Philadelphia critics and audiences were intrigued by this unusual work, the musical had a short-lived Broadway run and closed after 12 performances.

The Threepenny Opera did not find success in the United States until 1954 with Marc Blitzstein’s version at the Theater de Lys in Greenwich Village. This fabled production, starring Weill’s widow Lotte Lenya (as well as such notables as Ed Asner, Charlotte Rae and Beatrice Arthur) introduced Threepenny to American audiences—aided in no small part by Louis Armstrong, Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra’s recordings of “Mack the Knife.”

Like Candide, there are several versions of The Threepenny Opera, as well as numerous English translations. The Wilma Theatre’s production in 1997 utilized a translation by Michael Feingold (one originally created for a Broadway production starring Sting as MacHeath). The translation you are about to see was done by Robert MacDonald with English lyrics by Jeremy Sams and was first produced at London’s Donmar Warehouse. This translation is said by many to be truer to the darker aspects of Brecht’s original. I was attracted to the vitality and muscularity of the language and lyrics and was eager to hear actors give voice to these sometimes bawdy and often provocative words.

Over 80 years have passed since The Threepenny Opera first erupted on that Berlin stage, yet thiswonderful hybrid of a musical still has bite. Brecht was a poet, and I find myself listening to the ideas expressed through Brecht’s text and Weill’s insinuating score with fresh ears and an open mind. I invite you to do the same.

Enjoy.

A recent poll pit Luke Skywalker against Han Solo in an online popularity contest. Luke Skywalker is pure. Luke Skywalker is eager. Luke Skywalker lost by a two-to-one ratio. Although on paper the better man: loyal, earnest, dedicated, his moral superiority makes him aloof. Solo’s negative qualities–his selfishness, vanity, and rude exterior—make him much more relatable, easier to love, and definitely the guy you want as your co-pilot on a long interstellar flight.

An archetypal hero is better than the average man: better looking, smarter, more charismatic, a cleaner conscience, braver. The anti-hero may possess one or two of the traits of the classic hero but also numerous negative qualities: a dark past, laziness, amorality, violent tendencies, womanizing. Most archetypal heroes have a fatal flaw, while every anti-hero needs at least one redeeming quality. Tony Soprano loves his family, Batman stops crime, Dr. House cures the ill, and Dexter only kills killers.

Unsurprisingly, playwrights, directors, and actors embrace the anti-hero for the same reason audiences do: inhabiting the darker side of human nature guilt-free is fun. Not only can you vicariously indulge your basest desires, but when the curtain closes, the grime washes right off and you’re as moral a person as you’ve always been.

Anti-heroes really shine in the modern musical. Music opens the door so the anti-hero can pull the audience in. It helps the audience relax, embrace a different set of values, and have a good time. Sweeney Todd, murderous barber, would be unpalatable without Sondheim’s beautiful melodies; Roxie Hart, conniving wannabe, would be insufferable without the slinky jazz numbers of Chicago; and Evita, South American tyrantess, would be incomprehensible without songs that illustrate her magnetism. Songs act as the bait: the more audience members an anti-hero entertains, the more followers he ensnares. This is how Mack the Knife, career criminal, walks off the stage with the audience in his pocket.

A complex modern society needs complex heroes. Archetypal heroes make being good seem effortless. Living up to impossible standards can be exhausting while anti-heroes let us excuse our own shortcomings and have fun doing it. They see morality as a constant struggle and frequently lose. The dark side of the anti-hero calls to the darkness in our own souls: if they can be loved with all their faults, so can we.

We create and produce new work through our new-work development program, the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase. Our access program, Arden For All, makes our work available to the entire community through subsidized tickets and books for economically disadvantaged young people. We also offer sign language-interpreted, captioned and audio described performances and Pay-What-You-Can final dress rehearsals that benefit other nonprofits. The Arden has received seven Philadelphia Magazine “Best of Philly” Awards, the Arts & Business Council’s Arts Excellence Award, five City Paper “Reader’s Choice” Awards, four Philadelphia Inquirer “Theatre Company of the Year” citations, 52 awards and 250 nominations from the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia’s Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, and named “Best Theatre Company” by Philadelphia Weekly in 2009. The Music Of THE THREEPENNY OPERA –Matthew Decker, Associate Producer

The Threepenny Opera’s score has been hailed as a milestone of 20th century musical theatre. When composing, it was a goal of Kurt Weill’s to create a musical that transformed the saccharine, old-fashioned opera form and incorporated a sharp political perspective with the sound of the 1920’s Berlin dance bands and cabaret.

Weill’s score, with its spiky rhythms and biting harmonies, was a revelation to musical theatre, and its influence has been seen in such musicals as Cabaret, Chicago and Urinetown. Perhaps its most famous legacy is “The Flick Knife Song (The Ballad of Mack the Knife)”, which is one of the most covered songs in the jazz repertoire.

“The Ballad of Mack the Knife” was added to the score at the eleventh hour after the actor playing MacHeath in the original production vainly demanded there should be a song to build up his first appearance. Brecht and Weill wrote the lyrics and music practically overnight, and then promptly assigned the song to be sung by the Street Singer, not MacHeath!

When writing the score, Weill spent time pondering what function the music would have within Brecht’s script. In a letter written to the journal Anbruch in

1929, he said “I had a realistic plot, so I had to set the music against it, since I do not consider music capable of realistic effects. Hence the action was

either interrupted, in order to introduce music, or it was deliberately driven to a point where there was no alternative but to sing.”

This is different from most musicals, in which the music advances the plot, and navigating through that unique challenge requires

bold, fearless performers. Eric Ebbenga, The Threepenny Opera’s musical director, shared insight about working with actors on

such a complex piece.

“This score places challenging demands on its actors. Though it has operatic qualities, it feels to me more

like a play with music. The music is more about stopping the action and making a point with the

songs. [When singing], the actors aren’t always in character.”

Ebbenga adds, “To perform Weill’s score, you have to have faith in the music and the lyric. We’re encouraging the actor to serve as a vessel for the music. They must be straightforward and simple – not just perform the song, but live it.”
