The working Substance
The working substance: Absorbs heat or rejects heat.
Does work or work is done on it.
Compressed or expanded
Heated or cooled
So that the desired energy transfer is achieved.

Thermodynamic Properties
Properties is a measurable characteristics of a system
Examples:
Pressure
Volume
Temperature
Density
Enthalpy
Entropy
Specific heat
Any Thermodynamic System can be described with help of its properties
![Page 13: MET 211 introduction-to_thermdynamics_1-4_](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042700/5562292dd8b42ad44d8b53f5/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

System State
• The thermodynamic system is described in terms of certain values of
some properties.
• Any Two independent properties can completely fix the state of the
system
Thermodynamic Process
• A process is defined as the succession of specified changes in
the state of the system
• If the value of one of the properties is kept constant the process
is known by the properties which is kept constant.

Cyclic Process
If a system undergoes various processes in succession in
such way that at the end of the last process it returns to its
original state.
