We are beginning to collect some thoughts about what we are noticing from the 2.0 version of our experiment. Some things I have noticed include: kids having more relaxed bodies in 10:30 worship (at least at the start) because they get the chance to move during Let Us Play; kids more consistently enjoying spontaneous free play together on Wednesdays and Sundays; a group of caring adults in addition to parents who consistently come to connect and learn with the kids and parents at Wisdom and Wonder and All Congregation Service Project Sundays; a more varied participation across the different Sunday options; adults enjoying adult education offered on Story and Song Sundays; a longer time gap between worship services might be hindering people that attend 8:30 and 10:30 worship from connecting on Sunday morning; if families with young children come for both faith formation and worship, there is an adjustment to spending a longer time at church on Sunday mornings. I imagine some of you have noticed things about your experience of version 2.0 of our experiment. In the next months, we will be listening to and reflecting on your experience, which will inform what version 3.0 of our experiment will look like next program year. February/March 2018

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing. Psalm 100:1-2

If you are downstairs in the Fellowship Hall for Sunday Morning Faith Formation, you will DEFINITELY hear some noise—and it is a joyful noise! That noise is no longer made by kids in age-segregated classrooms, with adult leaders trying to keep down the racket. Now, all ages gather together, the adults laughing and enjoying right along with the kids—and that makes the noise even more joyful! This cross-generational joy is a calling of Mount Calvary and the larger church. It shares faith from generation to generation through connection and relationship that makes the stories of God take hold in us.

Our experiment is now nearly three years in the making. The first year, we gathered, learned, listened, and reflected on how we might bring all ages together on Sunday morning for faith formation. Then first year of experimenting began with All Always Learning 1.0. We then listened, learned, and reflected with participants to gain insight and input as we planned of the next version of our experiment. This program year, we ventured into version 2.0 of our experiment in faith formation for all ages, responding to what we learned from participants of 1.0.

Some of the changes this year in response to feedback included: reducing the feeling of being rushed during faith formation by spacing out our worship times; adding Let Us Play (church recess) each week so kids could get to know each other on their own terms the way kids do best—by playing together; providing opportunity for kids to attend Story and Song twice a month without their parents, if desired, which made it possible for parents to have a moment of respite or go to adult education; keeping something similar to All Always Learning 1.0—Wisdom and Wonder—offered once a month; and having an All Congregation Service Project once a month.

I wonder what version 3.0 of our experiment will bring! No matter what the experiment looks like, I am sure it will be filled with joy and gladness because God gives us that joy and gladness when we gather to grow in faith all generations together!

Today was a snow day with all activities canceled at church so I stayed home to write this article. Wendi Buck lives a mile and a half away from me so I donned my winter gear, put my ear buds in and found a podcast to listen to while I trudged through the snow to talk through details with her about the spring musical. I highly recommend checking out OnBeing.org for thought provoking writings, podcasts, etc. Today I listened to a broadcast from January 4th with Christian Wiman, titled “How does one remember God?”. There are two quotes from the interview that resonated with me. The first is: "I am convinced that the same God that might call me to sing of God at one time might call me, at another, to sing of godlessness. Sometimes, when I think of all of this energy that’s going on, all of these different people trying to find some way of naming and sharing their belief, I think it may be the case that God calls some people to unbelief in order that faith can take new forms.” What an interesting observation. Wiman himself was brought up in the south as a Baptist, became an agnostic and in his thirties became religious again and is now a professor in religion and literature at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. The second one immediately brought to mind several faces of people from Mount Calvary in worship. “Being religious, or taking on some sort of religious elements in your life, you are not necessarily saying, “I agree with everything that this religion says.” What you are saying is that I’ve had these incredible experiences in my life — of suffering or joy, or both, and they have demanded some action of me and demanded some continuity of me. And the only way that I know to do this is to try to find some form in it and to try to share it with other people.” Sharing in our joy and in our sorrow is quite important for us as human beings. Earlier in the interview Wiman talked about being content to sit, pray, meditate and read alone but how ultimately if the energy is all focused inward it can lead to despair. We really do need each other to lift us up! Almost every Wednesday there is a part of me that wishes I could be alone and make music but as soon as Youth Choir members show up for my first rehearsal, I am energized, buoyed and ready to go. They bring energy and joy to my life! There are many, many other parts of the interview that are worth thinking about and repeating but hopefully, this little snippet will either give you enough to think about or make you want to check out the interview in its entirety! God’s peace, Pam

Matins Service In traditional Christian practice, canonical hours (Matins and Vespers) mark the divisions of the day with periods of fixed prayer at regular intervals. In January, we began practicing “vespers,” or evening prayer on Wednesday evenings. On Tuesday, February 13, at 7:15am, we’ll begin observing weekly matins, or morning prayer. If praying together is something that interests you, you’re looking for a peaceful way to start your Tuesday morning, or you think you know someone who might enjoy this practice, please join us. We'll open the church doors at 7:00 and have coffee and donuts available.

Worship for Lent and Holy Week Ash Wednesday: Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. February 14. We will have worship services at 4:30 & 6:30pm with Imposition of Ashes and Communion. The sign of ashes suggests our human mortality and frailty. What seems like an ending is really an invitation to make each day a new beginning, in which we are washed in God’s mercy and forgiveness. Wednesday Holden Evening Prayer: February 21, 28, March 7, 14, 21 at 6:30pm. Each week will focus on a reading from the Gospel of John. Palm Sunday: March 25 at 8:30 & 10:30am Maundy Thursday: March 29 at 7:00pm Good Friday: March 30 at 7:00pm Easter Sunday: April 1st 8:15, 9:30, 10:45am

Easter Flowers

On Easter Sunday, our sanctuary will take on the look of a tranquil garden with a variety of spring flowers. If you would like to order an Easter plant to be used to decorate the Sanctuary for Easter Sunday, they will be on sale in the gathering area on March 4, 11, and 18. Or, you may contact the church office by Monday, March 19. The cost is $15 per plant. You may dedicate plants in memory or honor of someone, or to the glory of God.

Safety and Security at Mount Calvary

This is a reminder if you arrive at the church during the week and the doors are locked during the scheduled office hours, please ring the doorbell outside on the brick column for access. For safety reasons, the staff have been instructed to lock the doors when they are the only one here or the only one here on the main floor. The church office hours are Tuesday – Thursday from 8:30am to 3pm. In addition the church is open on Monday evenings from 5:30 – 7:00pm, Wednesday evenings from 4:30 – 7:30pm and Sunday mornings from 8:00 to 11:30am during the program year.

If you have any questions, please contact NaDyne Glidden, Business Administrator, at [email protected] or by calling the church office at 651-454-2344.

Table & Chair Rental

Members of Mount Calvary are able to rent church tables and chairs for social events by making arrangements with the church office. The tables and chairs that are available are located in the south garage. We have four 6’ white plastic tables, three 8’ gray plastic tables, and 85 older metal chairs available for rent. It is on a first reserve, first serve basis.

February Service Project: After-School Bags

Our February all-congregation service project will involve partnering with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services (LIRS) to assemble after-school bags together for children in families arriving in

Minnesota as refugees and immigrants. Join us in putting these bags together on Sunday, February 25 at 9:40am (between worship services), and help prepare in advance by bringing in items to put in the

bags. There will be a collection area in the narthex. Items needed include small soft balls (soccer or

volleyball), picture books or easy reader books, small stuffed animals, blocks, art supplies (crayons, colored

pencils, markers, water color paints, construction paper, white paper), and pads of paper. We will be

applying for a Thrivent Action Team Grant to augment the donations made for this effort. Thank you for your help in welcoming these families to our community!

March Service Project: Books for Rahn Elementary School

“You can find magic wherever you look…sit back and relax, all you need is a book”…Dr. Seuss

Our All –Congregation service project on March 25 service project will a fun one for all! We will be collecting new and gently used children's books (picture books, easy readers, chapter books) for Rahn Elementary students. The staff there has made a goal of providing a book to each child when they go home for the summer. With about 340 students at Rahn, we can take a big first step in helping them reach that goal! Please drop off your donated books from March 4 – March 18 in the bins provided in the narthex. We will also be applying for a Thrivent Action Team Grant to augment the donations made for

this effort. Thank you for your generous and giving spirit!

LifeStories

LifeStories participants were honored in January, with excerpts from their stories on the Art Wall in the Gathering Area throughout the month. They were also the featured speakers at an information session on LifeStories during the Faith Formation hour on January 14, attended by 25-30 people. LifeStories Story-Tellers Dick Johnson, Orv and Lorraine Felt, Mary Jane Pedersen representing Tom, Irene Getz, and Ken Morrison offered glimpses of their stories and spoke about the process that culminated in a printed personal history for family and future generations. LifeStories is a Mount Calvary inter-generational service project that helps members put down on paper, once and for all, the unique stories of their lives that have made them who they are. Armed with questions that can help trigger memories, volunteer Listeners meet with volunteer Story-Tellers in a series of listening sessions, helping them go back in time and relive events through their younger eyes. Listeners encourage, empathize and have fascinating conversations. If you simply ask people to tell you about their lives, they generally don't know where to begin. But the stories start to flow if you ask questions like “Who was the most inspirational person in your life?” “What activities did or do you find so engaging you lose all track of time?” “What did you do to get through the most difficult times in your life?” And you get beyond milestones and accomplishments to character, values and personality. Please consider joining us in this uplifting experience. If you would like more information about being a Story-teller or Listener, please contact a LifeStories team member: Vicky Avery, Deanna Baisch, Rich Cowles, Karen Dare, Brian Hornbecker (church staff), Lisa Johnson, Debbie Nickell and Mark Teats.

Writers’ Group

Several Mount Calvary members meet at 7:00pm on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month to encourage each other in observing, appreciating and chronicling life through written expression in various forms. At any given time there are people working on novels, short stories, poetry, essays, opinion commentaries, children’s stories, blogs—you name it. We share our writings for discussion and feedback, as well as our favorite books, poems, essays and articles. The varied perspectives offered by our different life experiences and writing experience (from beginners to veterans) make for rich, interesting and helpful discussions.

Bible Study on Acts

Starting on Sunday, February 18, Josh Moss, a seminary student in our congregation, will be leading an eight-week Bible study on parts of the Book of Acts. We will look at the book from a historical literary perspective and talk about what it means for us today. We will meet during the faith formation time between services (Sundays at 9:40) in the B1-B3 classroom area downstairs. Join us!

Warming You with Stitches Back when Warming You with Stitches was called Warm Up America, we would meet monthly on Monday evenings to work on projects. Fast forward to now, we meet on the first Sunday of the month (October-April) from 9:40-10:20am During the Faith Formation session, we teach crochet, work on projects, take in afghan blankets, and lend yarn out to those who make afghans for Mount Calvary. We welcome everyone -- all ages. So join us on the first Sunday of the month: February 4, March 4, and April 8. (Exception: Easter, April 1 we will not be meeting. Join us, instead, on April 8 -- our last session for 2017-18.)

Dakota County Emergency Homeless Shelter Update Matrix Emergency Shelter has partnered with 6 churches throughout Dakota County to provide emer-gency overnight shelter to single adults this winter. In the first two months of shelter operation, they have served over 110 individuals. They serve an average of 32 guests each night and the average guest has stayed 16 nights. The shelter guests are people with disabilities on fixed incomes, people who work every day of the week, and people who spend time most days looking for work and/or housing. Of the 100 people we have sheltered: 60% are men, 40% are women; 30% have a mental health issue; 30% have a chronic health condition or physical disability; over 50% were staying outside, in their car, or similar location prior to entering shelter; and at least 15 have exited the shelter to housing. The shelter has been able to stay open 24 hours/day every holiday and during the extremely cold weather. They have over 150 trained volunteers who assist in the shelter every evening and morning. Most dinners have been provided by volunteer groups. Volunteers have moved the shelter 5 times and they wash towels and linens every day. There is still time to get involved! The shelter will continue to operate through the end of March. There are many openings through March for dinner groups, shelter moves, and our laundry squad. Financial donations continue to be needed as well. To find out more or to volunteer, go to mtcalvary.com and go to the mission partners page.

Communion Education Class: Maundy Thursday, March 29 at 5:30pm

At Mount Calvary, Holy Communion is open to all—that means people of all ages and backgrounds are welcome at the Lord’s table. When Jesus said about communion, “Do this in remembrance of me,” he did not set any pre-conditions for who could receive the sacrament. You or your children may already be receiving communion and would like to learn more about it. Or you or you children may be preparing to receive communion for the first time. In any case, all are invited to attend a Communion education class on Maundy Thursday, the day we remember Jesus’ institution of this sacrament. The evening will begin with the class helping to make the communion bread to be used at the Maundy Thursday service. Next we’ll enjoy a supper followed by communion instruction. More information about how to sign up will be forthcoming.
