The national conference

on ‘Kannada Cinema: Literary,Philosophical Context’ held atBharatiya Vidya Bhavan,Bangalore, on April 22 & 23,2017, set a benchmark not onlyfor the deliberations it intended toachieve, but also for the way itwas conducted. A debate ofthis scale, initiated by Benaka,a Bangalore-based premiercultural institute, Bharatiya VidyaBhavan and Indian Council ofPhilosophical Research (ICPR),under the leadership of renownedfilm maker T. S. Nagabharana, was undoubtedly a need of thehour for the Kannada cinemaindustry.

A TWO-DAY NATIONAL SEMINAR ONKANNADA CINEMA: LITERARY,

PHILOSOPHICAL CONTEXTThe themes chosen for the

deliberations, the resourcepersons invited and the amountof research reflected in theirpresentations, the frameworkin which the sessions wereconducted, provided an academicdiscipline to the entire seminar.

It is often said one whodoesn’t remember his roots, cannot achieve prosperity, andthere have been concerns aboutKannada cinema that the peoplein the industry are detaching fromthe roots. The introductory wordsby T. S. Nagabharana, theDirector of the seminar, themselves reflected this concern. He said : “Today, cinema has

become a ‘no man’s land’ wheneverything is available in the cellphone. There is a feeling thatanybody can do anything here;but such a feeling is not a goodsign.” On the lines of this concern, the two-day deliberations raisedcertain serious questions for theintrospection of all thestakeholders of Kannada cinema.

Dr. ChandraprakashDwivedi, ace film director fromMumbai, made significantobservations regarding similaritiesand differences between theBollywood and Kannada cinemaand observed that a nationalseminar of the same statureneeded to be conducted inconnection with Indian cinema.Sri Srinath, eminent actor, and

Sri H. N. Suresh, Director,Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan,witnessed this meaningfulinaugural.

The first session hademinent personalities likeSri Prakash Belavadi andSri Sandeep Balakrishna asresource persons and veterancritic Prof. C. N. Ramachandranas its chairperson. Sri Belavadi, who spoke on ‘Kannada cinemaand the Kannada identity’,questioned how one could termsomething as Kannada cinema ifthere was nothing of Kannadain it except its language.Sri Balakrishna, who spoke on‘Kannada movies with historicalthemes’ made subtle observationsthat the ‘historical movies’ came

up in the recent years lacked theoriginality and aesthetics of thosemovies produced in the sixtiesand seventies. In his presidentialremarks, Prof. Ramachandranobserved that the Kannadaidentity in movies could be tracedin their experimental initiatives like‘Mysuru Mallige’, ‘Samskara’,‘Puttakkana Highway’, and thosewhich had reflected the folk life(like that of ‘Nagamandala’).

The second session, chaired by renowned litterateurProf. H. S. Venkateshmurthy, had veteran journalists Dr. BabuKrishnamurthy (Bhakti movementand Kannada cinema) andSri M. K. Bhaskar Rao (Novelsand Kannada cinema) and seniorcritic Dr. N. S. Sridharmurthy(Kannada poetic tradition andKannada cinema) on the panel.Dr. Babu Krishnamurthy, whoopined that no other moviesinfluenced Indians so immenselyother than those with Bhaktitheme, emphasized that “suchmovies saved India and itsculture”. Analyzing the influenceof Kannada poetic traditionon Kannada cinema,Sri Sridharmurthy noted thatKannada movies gave thecommon audience what themodern poetry did not give.

Sri Bhaskar Rao stressed theneed for treating authors onpar with the ‘heroes’. In hispresidential remarks, Prof.Venkateshmurthy observed thatlitterateurs would not have thefreedom of their own whilewriting for movies, which wouldbe one of the reasons for manywriters could not involvethemselves in the cinema field.

The second day startedwith an illuminative sessionchaired by renowned composerSri Hamsalekha. Well-knownscholar Shatavadhani Dr.R. Ganesh spoke on ‘Epics andKannada cinema’ and notedthat epics like Ramayana andMahabharata were not mademovies completely in Kannada, which happened in otherlanguages like Hindi, Tamiland Telugu. He also told thatepic-based movies in Kannadalacked authenticity andprofessionalism.

Sri N. Vidyashankar, whospoke on ‘Experiments in newwave cinema’, discussed thequestion why Kannada movieswere not being made for theglobal audience. Sri T. S.Nagabharana analyzed the impactof theatre on Kannada cinema, and observed that Kannada

15

cinema which was the extensionof theatre in the early days, wasin turn influencing the theatre now.In his presidential remarks,Sri Hamsalekha said Kannadacinema should have made thebest use of technology, but it wasbeing used only for gimmicks. He stressed that there had beena large gap between Kannadacinema and technology.

The fourth session waschaired by veteran singerDr. B. K. Sumithra. Presentinga paper on ‘Female characters inKannada cinema’, eminent writerSmt. Pratibha Nandakumarobserved that the Kannadamovies were dominated by‘male gaze’ and there had beenno space for ‘female gaze’.There would be some relief to thisissue if women directors inculcatefeministic tendencies in them, shenoted. Journalist Bharathi Hegdediscussed the ‘Question of self ofwomen in Kannada cinema’ andemphasized that there was needfor change in the attitudes ofproducers, directors and heroestowards women.

Special demonstrations on‘Bhakti music in Kannada cinema’by Pandit Nagaraj Havaldaron the first day and on ‘Dancetradition in Kannada cinema’ by

artiste Dr. Sridhar on the secondday made the evenings added anew dimension to the seminar.

The valedictory ceremonywas graced by ace film makerSri S. V. Rajendra Singh Babuand veteran scholar Prof. S.R.Leela. Sri Babu was not justhumoristic when he said“Even though the underworldhas left the swords and guns, the film industry is not readyto leave them”, pointing at thediminishing sensitivities in thecommercial Kannada cinema.Prof. S.R. Leela, whowitnessed the two-dayproceedings completely, noted that the seminar hadbroken the monotonous one-way deliberations taking placein connection with the cinemafield.

The words of Prof. Leela, who was also the representativeof ICPR from Karnataka, rightly summarized the seminar. The event also raised certainimportant questions, whichshowed the avenues for the futurediscussions. The seminar directorSri. T. S. Nagabharana andconvener Sri N. S. Sridharmurthycertainly deserve greatappreciations for organizing sucha meaningful, milestoneevent.
