As you are all acutely aware, quite a lot of things have changed for us all in the space of a fortnight. Our staff are working to adapt to online learning platforms, while our families are working to adapt to home learning environments, often for multiple children, and our students are trying to adapt to following instructions in a completely different manner. It goes without saying, that the staff and I are in absolute awe at the degree of flexibility and positivity shown from our community during this transition period – a time when teachers, students and their families are all learning new skills and strategies for the delivery of meaningful learning.

This week will see our staff working to a flexible roster, with some working from home while most are at school. This will allow staff to both minimise contact with others whilst testing methods of remote teaching and communication to ensure learning is maintained. Please know, that students will be supervised as usual if at school. Our school remains open for those families who require supervision to allow them to do the important and essential work each day to keep us safe, provided for and fed. We thank you all for your service at this time and are keen to support our families however necessary. Stay safe everyone!

Restrictions begin as schools move towards online learning 23 March 2020

The NSW Government has taken significant new steps to increase restrictions across the state - triggering the next level of

enforcement necessary to fight COVID-19.

Following the decisions made by National Cabinet, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed the shutdown to protect NSW citizens.

"I understand many in the community are worried, and these changes will affect everyday lives, and may be upsetting," Ms Berejiklian

said.

"But these decisions will make us all safer, they are taken with the health of all citizens in mind, and they must be taken now.

"If you have the capacity to work from home, you should do so."

In line with health advice, from midday today, the following non-essential activities and businesses will be temporarily shut down:

• pubs, registered clubs

• gyms, indoor sporting venues

• cinemas, entertainment venues, casinos, and night clubs

• restaurants and cafes will be restricted to takeaway and/or home delivery

• religious gatherings, places of worship (excluding small weddings and funerals that comply with the 4m2 rule, which can

proceed).

It is important to note essential gatherings at places such as hospitals, workplaces, constructions sites and for public transport are

exempt and will continue.

As confirmed last night by the Prime Minister schools will remain open, based on health advice, which has not changed.

But from tomorrow, in NSW, for practical reasons, parents are encouraged to keep their children at home.

"Because nearly 30 per cent of children are already being kept out of school, for practical reasons NSW is encouraging parents to keep

their children at home," Ms Berejiklian said.

"This will ensure there is only one unit of work, whether the student is at home or at school.

"No child will be turned away from school."

Latest advice

• Get up-to-date information about the department's response to COVID-19 (novel coronavirus).

• Explore the department's learning from home resources for teachers and parents to support both online and offline learning for

Coronavirus disease

(COVID-19)

Information for schools and early childhood centres,

students and their parents

People who have returned from a country or region that is at high or moderate risk for COVID-19 should monitor their health closely. If you develop symptoms including a fever and cough you should isolate yourself immediately and urgently seek medical attention. Go to www.health.gov.au/covid19-travellers for the list of at-risk countries.

People who think they may have been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus should also monitor their health and seek urgent medical attention.

Can students or staff members attend schools and early

childhood centres?

Specific requirements are in place for people who have returned from a country or region that is at high or moderate risk for COVID-19, or think may they have been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus. Go to www.health.gov.au/covid19-travellers for the list of at-risk countries and isolation requirements.

The relevant school or childcare centre should be notified. Students may want to seek alternate arrangements for remote learning keeping in mind the isolation period, provided the person remains well, is a maximum of 14 days.

What does isolate in your home mean?

People who need to isolate must stay at home and not attend public places, in particular work, school, childcare or university. Only people they usually live in the household with should be in the home.

Do not see visitors. Where possible, ask others such as friends or family, who are not required to be isolated, to get food or other necessities. If the person in isolation must leave the home or residence, such as to seek medical care, they are instructed to wear a surgical mask if they have one.

What if a student or staff member becomes sick while in isolation?

Symptoms include (but are not limited to) fever, cough, sore throat, tiredness and shortness of breath.

If a student/staff member develops mild symptoms, they must:

• Isolate themselves from others at home and use a separate bathroom if available;

• Put on a surgical mask and if they don’t have one, practise good sneeze/cough hygiene;

• Practise good hand hygiene; and

• Call a doctor or hospital and tell them the recent travel or close contact history.

If they have serious symptoms such as difficulty breathing:

• Call 000, ask for an ambulance and notify the officers of the recent travel or close contact history.

ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL - IN AN ONLINE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT During this time there are student absences that are understandibly going unexplained. We understand that there are challenges at this time and ask that each student make contact with the teacher through Google Classroom each day, several times a day if possible. This will not only let the teacher know to mark them as present, it will keep your child feeling connected and will continue progress in their education. Roll marking will continue throughout this period of online learning with students being marked as follows, depending on what has been indicated from home: F (Flexible) 1.Students at home engaged in learning because parents have kept them at home, they have been placed into self-isolation due to contact or have been self-isolated after returning from overseas. A (Absent) 2.There is no evidence of students completing work therefore students are on unapproved leave. S (Sick) 3.Parents advise the school that their child is sick and not able to attend school and therefore unable to complete work Please follow the Health Department advice if students are presenting as unwell. That is the priority as always. As always, if a student’s pattern of attendance becomes a concern or a parent continues to ignore school requests to explain absences, the matter will be referred to the Home School Liaison Officer who will make direct contact with the family to work together to improve student attendance. Every day counts at school. Patterns of attendance and participation are developed in the early years of a person’s life, impacting the way they as adults may take part in future study, employment and life opportunities.

For more information on absences please use the link below: https://education.nsw.gov.au/content/dam/main-education/student-wellbeing/attendance-behaviour-and-engagement/media/documents/attendance/com_english.pdf

School Payments

Please ensure that payments are made into the correct accounts i.e. School Account or MPS P&C Account. School events are usually associated with excursions, incursions or course payments, Cash, cheque or POP payments made online through the school website can be used for school payments. P&C events like Meal Deals, Monster Fest, Easter Raffle, Disco etc–must be paid separate to school accounts. They can be made through cash, cheque or online direct debit payments via the P&C account.

No POP payments can be accepted for P&C events. SRC event payments are also kept separate from the school’s account. These payments need to be cash only. The school then banks the money at the appropriate time and spends funds from school accounts on the initiatives. . Please check payment details carefully on the note for which account needs the money deposited.

BOOKCLUB Scholastic book club offer our students a wonderful variety of current texts and resources that, for many students , helps to engage them in literature and the joy of reading. All orders and payments are online. No money can be accepted for these orders. When purchasing anything from bookclub, please use the ‘loop’ process below.

NSW School Updates app

The NSW School Updates app allows parents and carers to receive operational status updates for NSW

public schools.

NSW families can now get notified when their school becomes non-operational, wherever they are. The

app will complement the other means of communication available to parents and carers from schools

and the Department of Education to ensure families receive timely, accurate information in a crisis.

The app is free and available now for iOS and Android users.

• Download for iOS - App StoreExternal link.

• Download for Android - Google PlayExternal link.

You can opt in for notifications about the operational status of as many NSW public schools as you

choose.

Wellbeing and PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) Our students have continued to maintain a positive atmosphere in the playground by reflecting on our three school rules/ key words. Our current PBL Focus will be undertaken in a more flexible, needs based, format.

Staff will continue to analyse behaviour data to ascertain areas of need across the school.

Staff are continuing to follow-up on explicit lessons, involving students thinking about what safety, respect and responsibility looks like in particular areas of the school.

We recognise that there will always be small issues amongst students. Please encourage your child to talk to their teacher or principal if they have any concerns in regards to social interactions in the school. If this is not appropriate, please make contact with the school as soon as possible so smaller issues can be attended to before becoming bigger. Staff take great time and care in working to ensure that students feel happy, secure and supported at school.

Students crossing the road…. hold a hand! Please remember to hold your child’s hand to cross the road, particularly with younger students. Neich Road, whilst relatively quiet, can be a dangerous crossing in the morning and afternoon, with some motorists ignoring our warning signs. A student pedestrian accident would be a devastating way to learn this lesson for the sake of a couple of minutes it takes to walk students in or out of school. Thank you.

Learning Dispositions This year you will hear the staff and students talking about ‘learning dispositions’. These dispositions can be described as frequent and voluntary habits of thinking and doing. They are different to a skill or knowledge- they are ways of responding to an experience in a certain way. Aside from staff and students, it is our intention that you will also be able to use this language too as a way to further support your child throughout their schooling. One of our goals is that these will become a regular part of what we all do at Maraylya PS and what our learners do for life. Through our extensive and ongoing training in Visible Learning practice, the school aims to explicitly teach and foster these dispositions to and for our learners. Our colour-coded ‘Mar-aliens’ on posters in classrooms will help to reinforce these worthwhile approaches to learning. Teachers have spoken about this at Meet the Teacher Night. Our next disposition is…….

Class News…

Kindergarten Kindy are continuing to learn their sounds, hear and record sounds in their writing and read new books. I’m very impressed with how our class is settling into routines at school and the classroom. Please remember to connect to our class Dojo and Google classroom. If you are unsure, please ring, email or message me. It is so important, particularly if your child is at home, that they stay connected – mental health is important too! Please sign in each day and say ‘hi’… I would love you to post a photo of your work each day too. I’m still handing out Star Awards!!!

Year 1

Year 1 have been busy writing catalogue poems and emotional poems. This week students are looking at emotional poems and how words can make people feel a certain way. The new focus in Maths is patterns. Students will understand that counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s is a number pattern. They will also be looking at number patterns that are counting backwards and filling in the missing number in the number pattern.

Year 2

Hello all, this is me officially signing in for work today. Google classroom seems to be working really well for us in combination with talking to parents through class dojo. All seem to be happy with how it is all progressing at home with their kids and Mackenzie's mum said she was much brighter yesterday after chatting to the class on google classroom which was lovely.

3/4 Year 3/4 have been busy learning how to use Google Classroom and have really enjoyed the challenge. It has allowed our students both at school and home to continue their learning, especially in English, so that we can continue developing writing, spelling, reading and grammar skills. In grammar, students have been learning about the differences between direct and indirect speech. They are learning how to use appropriate punctuation to write direct speech and how to correctly report the words someone spoke. They can then incorporate their new skills into their narrative writing as part of character dialogue which is important to developing the plot. Well done developing your skills this fortnight 3/4!

5/6

We have finished our class novel for the term, Boy Overboard. I think I am safe to say that we all enjoyed reading this novel and we all learnt some interesting things about refugees. In our reading lessons online, we will continue to complete our novel study by looking deeper into the characters, authors intent and even completing some research tasks.

5/6 are now completing all lessons on Google Classroom either from home or school. Thank you to those students who have been completing the activities. I am going to try and keep our days and lessons as normal as possible. It has been great being able to communicate with some of the class who are completing their work at home. Stay well and safe everyone - don't forget to wash your hands!

R.E.D. Reading In K-2, our R.E.D reading folders are used. All students have been provided with a red folder – which is separate to a homework folder.

• Students can bring in their folder as many days a week as they choose… it’s up to you – how much do you want to read?

• Teachers will then ask students to read the book they have been practising, and decide if this book needs a little more practice or can be swapped.

• Students have a ‘punch’ card and will earn a Star Award once their card has been filled.
