Message from the Chair

We have important work to do in 2014. On March

9th, Legislative District Caucuses will be held

around the state. Do you want to be a delegate to

the Washington State Democratic Party Convention

34th. Attend this significant convention to assess

the new state chair, the future of the state party and

to regain the state senate majority.

Help out on a short-term project with the 34th: Be

an organizer for our 2014 LD caucus. Our needs

include: tally, sign-in, outreach, credentials,

publicity, and hospitality committees. Please

contact me to participate. We need many

organizers in order to make the day go smoothly

and efficiently.

Congratulations: Representative Joe Fitzgibbon on

his chairmanship of the House Environment

Let’s get out the vote in 2014 and get the

ground game going for 2016.

Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Marcee Stone-Vekich, Chair

Committee. Senator Sharon Nelson is the new leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus

and Representative Eileen Cody carries on as Chair of the Healthcare and Wellness

Committee. Their legacy will be felt in the state for generations.

Legislative Action Day in Olympia

January 20, MLK, Jr Day In past years the Legislative Action Committee has met in

February, on Presidents Day. This year it will be held on Martin

Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 20. The Legislative

Committee felt is was important to lobby our legislators earlier

in the session, especially for a short session like this one. By

Presidents Day, votes may already have been taken and our

influence is diminished.

In past years we have met as a group in the morning to

discuss the LAC’s goals, and then during lunch we heard from

any Democratic legislator who were able to get away from

meetings. They each have for five minutes or so to speak on

what bills they are working on, and also about what we can do

to help. This is a great way to get the inside scoop on what’s

happening in Olympia in this, yet another, peculiar year. In the

afternoon we will meet with our legislators, and perhaps

legislators from other districts. Last year we met with Steve

Berquist who filled us in about what was happening with his

bill on early voter registration for high school students.

For more information about where and when, and for sign up

and car pool information, contact 34th District Democrats

Legislative Action Chair Tamsen Spengler at 932-2772 or

[email protected].

There is a charge for materials and a box lunch.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

About Progressive Radio Northwest

www.progressiveradionorthwest.org

On January 2, 2013, Seattle became the latest in a string of

progressive cities to inexplicably lose its only progressive talk

station when KPTK AM1090 was switched to an all sports for-

mat. Well, we cry foul! The free public airwaves belong to eve-

ryone and progressive voices need to be a vital part of the local

and national conversation.

Progressive Radio Northwest (PRNW) is a group of volunteers

bringing strong-signal progressive talk programming back to

Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Our mission is to:

-- Catalyze an invigorated progressive radio platform for the

greater Seattle area; and

-- Promote progressive programming on the free public air-

waves and digital technologies.

January 2014—Lisa Plymate, M.D.

As a physician, Lisa is a strong advocate for patients. She

joined PNHP http://www.pnhp.org/ approximately 15

years ago and still supports them.

After Obama’s election, she concluded that he was going

to modify our health care delivery system in a different

way, and joined Doctors for America (DFA) http://

www.drsforamerica.org/ to try to influence that change, in

particular fighting for a public option. She has been WA

State Director of DFA for past 4 years—and got to

represent our state in the Rose Garden in 2009 and meet

with Harry Reid and HHS Secretary Sibelius, among

others. She is the DFA WA chapter representative for the

Healthy Washington Coalition. http://

www.healthywa.org/2013/08/12/welcome-to-the-healthy

-washington-coalition-website/

She became a member of the National Physicians

Alliance, a 15,000 member national, multi-specialty policy

and advocacy group working for equitable, affordable

health care for all, three years ago. http://npalliance.org/

She is in her third year as a member of the NPA national

policy committee and serves as a “Copello fellow” this

year, which is a 16-member group of leaders across the

country. NPA has a strong Unbranded Doctors http://

npalliance.org/action/the-unbranded-doctor/ campaign.

Members agree not to see pharmaceutical representatives

in their offices or take any gifts from them. Lisa co-chairs

the Food and Drug Administration task force for this issue,

supporting the FDA in putting patient safety and drug/

device efficacy first. NPA also has a strong campaign

against gun violence, treating it as a public health issue.

Lisa works with UW medical students and residents to

help them get engaged, as it is crucial for upcoming

doctors to be involved in changing health care system

from the start.

She currently works half-time for Providence ElderPlace

near Columbia City. Primarily with dual eligible, people on

both Medicare and Medicaid. Participants in this program

are complex medically, poor, frail. The population is highly

diverse--25% do not speak English and 50% have

significant mental illness. Her immediate prior position

was with migrant workers in eastern Washington. She

knows from her daily practice why we must treat health

care as a basic human right.

My New Year's Resolution By Representative Joe Fitzgibbon

I’m a football fan—specifically, I’m a Seattle Seahawks 12th Man. We adhere to the tenets of Win Forever:

Three rules: 1. Always protect the team; 2. No whining, no complaining, no excuses; 3. Be early.

Style: Great effort, great enthusiasm, great toughness, play smart.

Beliefs: It’s all about the ball. Everything counts. Respect everyone.

Philosophy: Do things better than they have ever been done before.

Much has been said (much of it mocking) about this sports dogma espoused by Pete Carroll. But really, it’s just one

leader’s approach to summoning the best out of individuals and orienting that potential to a common cause. As fans

we turn to sports for inspiration and entertainment, and it’s great to be in Seattle rooting for a team that strives for

these ideals. So, cheesy or not, I’m in: Go Hawks, Win Forever.

And yet on Sunday, while trudging out of CenturyLink Field following a frustrating 10-17 loss to the Cardinals, I did

not display Win Forever behavior. I said something hurtful about a lot of people that I don't know. I called a whole

state racist. It was wrong, I regret it, and I'm very sorry.

Now, you may fairly ask yourself why someone would feel it necessary to make that connection, let alone share

them with people. Fair enough. As I was watching our quarterback get sacked—four times—I got aggravated. For

some reason I got to thinking about how the NFL once moved the Superbowl out of Arizona when it refused to

recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which led to idle thoughts about SB 1070 and the failure this year of

commonsense immigration reform at the national level. (Yeah, I’m really fun at parties.)

As for why I shared it—this was one of those moments where I suffered from the incorrect belief that I had a thought

worth sharing. As best I can tell we all seem prone to them, though my generation is the one that’s probably most

disposed to sharing them online. My generation, like every young generation before it, is also a generation

demanding gains in equality and justice, and we’re doing it online, so I’ll take the tradeoff of too many dinner plate

pics and the occasional errant tweet by a loud-mouthed politician.

Did I forget to mention I’m an elected official and that’s why we’re still talking about this? Yep. We’re talking about it

because I’ve asked people to care what I say, and then I said something stupid and careless. For that I sincerely

apologize.

To Arizona: I love deserts. I truly do not believe yours is a state populated by racists. I don’t know why I insulted your

state. I'm deeply impressed by those of you who love and are proud of your state and are working it to make it a

better place. But I do not love SB 1070, and I believe in the power of state government to make things better for the

people of a state. I’d love to visit and talk about any of this, particularly with any of you working on environmental

issues or civil rights.

To my constituents: It is a pleasure and an honor serving you. I will go on record as both a Seahawks fan and a

supporter of immigration reform. With your forgiveness, I’ll put my head down and get back to work trying to save

our buses and fully fund education.

To my colleagues: I hope I didn’t let you down by causing another trivial distraction from the hard work we have

ahead of us.

To the Cardinals: Nice work. You played well yesterday, even in the rain. Fitz, you have half a cool last name but you

played it full.

To the Seahawks: You aren’t reading this, are you? I hope not. I’ll keep quiet and let you go back to work.

To anyone else who was inadvertently hurt: I'm sorry. It's a painful but good reminder for me to think about the effect

that my words, intentional or careless, can have.

The Washington State Legislature, in which I proudly serve, starts business on Monday, January 13, 2014. Here’s my

goal for this session and beyond: I’m going to try to bring the Win Forever attitude to my work. I won’t be glib or paint

with a unfairly broad brush when I am trying to talk about serious policy like immigration, or when I talk about other

people. My goal is that all of my communication will be productive and empathetic, and that it will advance the ball,

so to speak.

Date of SKC Democrats Dinner: May 17th, 2014

Location: Machinist’s Hall

Price: $25.00 advance, $30.00 at door

Tickets will be sold online and at LD monthly meetings

(including the 34th’s), LD Caucuses, County Convention and at

the January WSDCC meeting in Vancouver.

The theme, to be determined, will depend on the keynote

speaker we land.

Our wish list for keynote speakers:

1. Gary Locke

2. Patty Murray, Maria Cantwell (tie)

3. Ron Reagan

There are other choices, but these are our first choices. Tim

Burns from the 30th is heading this up.

The30th will head up food, 47th tickets, 34th

(me) PR media contact. We need someone to

head up silent auctions. If anyone would like

to do this, or know someone who would please

let me know.

The majority opinion is to not have a live auc-

tion this year, just silent. Also, the inclination

is to have each LD pick there top silent auction

items and submit them. How many each LD

will be able to have will depend on how many

LDs participate. As of now it’s looking like it

will be the 30th, 33rd, 34th, 47th and 11th,

although no one showed up from the 11th.

Another note of interest, Mark McDermott

(Jim’s brother) does an excellent presentation

on income inequality. He will be at the 30th’s

monthly meeting on February 5th. All are wel-

come.

If you have any questions about the dinner, or

would like to volunteer, please let me know.
