1 Quality paint repair
a) Preparation
Within the preparation step, cleaning is paramount to
ensure there is no risk of contamination to the repair being
executed. Highly trained personnel along with well
equipped workstations ensure the execution of high quality
repairs at all times.
Well-organized and clean working places form the basis of
high quality repairs. They can vary from bodyshop to
bodyshop, but they should follow the same concept.
The right process will influence the end result.
Standardised processes ensure an efficient repair at all
times, with well equipped work stations and dedicated tools
for the type of repair.
A well organized work station improves the efficiency of the
work flow and the quality of the repair.
First rule: good housekeeping is very important. This
applies to the work station, the workshop floor, staff and
equipment. Quality improvement systems will support to
reach the optimum process.
All objects which are being repaired have to be cleaned
before preparation and application of the approved paint
system and products. It is recommended to use only high
quality cleaning cloths and to always use two cloths. One
cloth for the wet cleaning and the second cloth to wipe the
surface dry again.
Substrates made of metal are “clean” when no colored
contaminations are left on the cleaning cloth.
The use of the correct personal protection equipment
(PPE) is critical:
1. For health & safety reasons along with personal
protection and well-being.
2. To avoid contamination and paint defect caused
by contact by hand etc.
Country specific regulations on health and safety have to
be followed.
Working with approved paint systems and processes
ensures that each repair type being executed is carried out
effectively and to a high quality.
4
b) Tools
Tools and equipment play an important role in achieving a
high quality repair. Tools should be maintained and
serviced at regular intervals as per the manufacturers’
recommendations.
Sanding tools and dust extraction
It is necessary to use the right sanding tools in combination
with an operational dust extraction system to reach a high
quality result.
Cars are manufactured using different types of substrates
like plastics, aluminum, carbon fibre and different strength
metals. It is critical to use the recommended systems
according to the substrate.
Aluminum
A separate working place is needed for the repair and
preparation of aluminum. Preparation of aluminum and
steel substrates with the same tools will cause contact
corrosion.
A working place for aluminum preparation needs dedicated
equipment, e.g. separate sanding tools and dust extraction.
Carbon (CFK)
To avoid contamination between different substrates,
dedicated tooling should be used also for these types of
substrates.
Sanding tools need to be connected to the central dust
extraction system at the work station. This will minimise the
amount of sanding dust and ensure a high quality repair. It
is recommneded to follow the intructions and guidelines set
out by the tool manufacturer.
5
c) Dry sanding
All sanding steps are recommended by dry sanding, as it
ensures an economical and ecological process.
Dry sanding requires usage of the right tools and
appropriate sanding paper, following the recommendations
of the paint and abrasive manufacturer.
Sanding recommendations for all repair types can be found
in the written systems.
Both parties (paint and abrasive manufacturer) are eager
to optimize the process inside the bodyshop to achieve a
constant high quality repair.
Choosing the right sanding tool and material for the repair
type (substrate) will lead to high quality results.
d) EP filler
To reach an optimum corrosion protection special products
based on different resins are needed. Products based on
Epoxy resins show these characteristics.
Epoxy Primers give very good adhesion and corrosion
protection. They also have a very high resistance to
chemicals and humidity.
Note:
EP Primer Fillers shall be used only for the following repair
types:
Seam Sealing
Underbody Protection
Windscreen Bonding
EP resin based products such as primers are widely used
for restoring “Classic Cars”.

Color check
Check on color by making spray-outs first.
Spray-outs must be sprayed vertically; at least 5 spray cards are needed.
Non sanding filler according to TDS to be applied.
Color sample
The bottom of spray cards needs to be masked, so that filler color can be made visible by removing mask.
The foundation color according to TDS has to be applied.
After drying a further section of masking tape is to be applied to lower section of the spray card.
Color sample
All cards except one has to be masked, one layer of the effect color to be applied.
After flash-off removal of masking paper to show 2 spray cards. One layer of the effect color to be applied.
After flash-off removal of masking paper to show 3 spray cards. One layer of the effect color to be applied.
Color sample
After flash-off the paper has to be removed. 4 samples are now visible, 1 extra layer has to be applied.
The masking paper needs to be removed and the final layer of effect color has to be applied. When completely dry and matt, the clearcoat according TDS follows.
Once the clearcoat is dry the masking tape has to be removed. On the back of each spray card the number of layers applied needs to be written down.
Color check
The sample with best match to the object has to be selected.

b) Matt finishes - cleaning and maintenance
Cleaning and maintenance
When
When a vehicle is freshly painted the paint film is at its most sensitive with respect to attack
by chemical cleaner and the cleaning process. It is recommended that freshly painted
vehicles be allowed a minimum of 7 days before being subjected to any form of chemical
cleaning process, ideally extended to 21 days.
Method
The use of a car wash or any type of brush to wash/clean Matt Finishes is not recommended!
The vehicle must be cleaned with clean cold water preferably using a hose or a pressure
washer to remove any loose road traffic film and dust particles. The use of a high pressure
steam washer is not recommended.
The vehicle can then be washed by using a PH neutral based soap and soft sponge to
minimize the risk of any type of abrasions.
At all times excessive rubbing of the paint surface should be avoided as this could lead to the
surface becoming glossier in appearance.
Again the surface has to be rinsed with clean cold water preferably using a hose or a
pressure washer. The vehicle should dry naturally until only a few water drops are present on
the surface. To remove the remaining water drops and to prevent any water marking the
surface has to be dried gently by using a soft chamois avoiding excessive rubbing of the
paint surface.
The vehicle should not be washed in direct sunlight and or when the vehicle surface
temperature is excessive i.e. above 25°C.
Any contamination found on the paint surface should be removed immediately i.e. bird lime
or insects etc. The affected area must be soaked with clean water preferably with a hose or
high pressure washer to soften the contaminated area. The contamination should removed
gently by using a soft sponge and PH neutral soap.
For difficult to remove contamination it may be necessary to use a solution designed
specifically to remove insects, etc. According products can be found in car care shops. Care
should be taken not to allow any type of solution to dry on the paint surface as this could
damage the surface even further.
The manufacturer’s instructions on use have to be followed always.
Maintenance
It is not possible to carry out any type of polishing or waxing to a Matt Finish. Polishing or
waxing of the matt finish will only lead to areas being left glossy due to the rubbing technique
and abrasive compounds found in polishing materials.
Regular washing is the only way possible to maintain the paint surface as described above.
Contamination has to be removed as soon as it becomes visible using the method detailed
above.
Particular care should also be taken when opening and closing doors, bonnet and boot lid as
excessive rubbing around handle areas will also lead to the area becoming glossy.

The surface has to be cleaned with the selected surface cleaner and a clean cloth. Immediately thereafter, the surface has to be wiped dry thoroughly with high quality absorbent degreasing cloths. Two cloths have to be used, as one cloth will merely shift rather than remove dirt and grease. The surface cleaner should not evaporate as the contamination on the surface will remain. The surface has to be wiped dry thoroughly before the degreaser evaporates.

c) Color formula
Automatchic
The advanced Automatchic combined with the Mixit Pro color retrieval software
delivers simple and high quality color matching. Operation is straightforward. After
reading the color, the software automatically searches for the closest color formula
and optimizes this formula if needed. For difficult colors, Automatchic offers a unique
step that automatically tints the chosen formula. Based on state of the art LED
technology, it is easy to position and handle. A light barrier prevents interference from
external light sources, so that there can be no mistakes in color reading. Automatchic
makes it easy to find the best color formula for almost any car color on the road.
Mixit Pro
Mixit Pro is Sikkens’ easy to use color retrieval software. When connected to the
internet, Mixit Pro synchronizes to download the latest available updated formula and
software. Searching and finding the right color is very easy using the step by step
functionality. Beyond formula retrieval Mixit Pro has everything you need for fast and
efficient color management. Mixit Pro has a range of reports to enable the bodyshop
to analyse consumption and material costs per repair.
ColorScala Pro
ColorScala Pro is the ideal choice for the perfect color match. Large, separate
sprayed cards make it easy to find the right variant. These variants represent the
actual formula to mix, guaranteeing the most reliable results and the highest color
accuracy possible. ColorScala Pro is both extensive and user friendly. It visualizes
only the variants most likely to occur and represents a relevant color difference.
Online and mobile color retrieval
Mixit Online is an application that enables color matching online. Users can easily
access color formulas at anytime quickly. There are three search options available:
manufacturer, house colors or color groups. This allows the user to access formulas
depending on the information they have to search. In addition, the users are also
provided with further information quickly and reliably, this includes an overview of the
variants and an indication of where the color can be found in ColorScala Pro.

c) Color formula
Mixit Online on mobile devices. Sikkens Mixit Online brings the convenience of its color retrieval
system to mobile phones. It can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from any mobile
phone or tablet that connects to the internet. Mixit Online is available free of charge. Just
download the smartphone app “iMatchColor”.
