1 Quality paint repair

a) Preparation

Within the preparation step, cleaning is paramount to

ensure there is no risk of contamination to the repair being

executed. Highly trained personnel along with well

equipped workstations ensure the execution of high quality

repairs at all times.

Well-organized and clean working places form the basis of

high quality repairs. They can vary from bodyshop to

bodyshop, but they should follow the same concept.

The right process will influence the end result.

Standardised processes ensure an efficient repair at all

times, with well equipped work stations and dedicated tools

for the type of repair.

A well organized work station improves the efficiency of the

work flow and the quality of the repair.

First rule: good housekeeping is very important. This

applies to the work station, the workshop floor, staff and

equipment. Quality improvement systems will support to

reach the optimum process.

All objects which are being repaired have to be cleaned

before preparation and application of the approved paint

system and products. It is recommended to use only high

quality cleaning cloths and to always use two cloths. One

cloth for the wet cleaning and the second cloth to wipe the

surface dry again.

Substrates made of metal are “clean” when no colored

contaminations are left on the cleaning cloth.

The use of the correct personal protection equipment

(PPE) is critical:

1. For health & safety reasons along with personal

protection and well-being.

2. To avoid contamination and paint defect caused

by contact by hand etc.

Country specific regulations on health and safety have to

be followed.

Working with approved paint systems and processes

ensures that each repair type being executed is carried out

effectively and to a high quality.

4

b) Tools

Tools and equipment play an important role in achieving a

high quality repair. Tools should be maintained and

serviced at regular intervals as per the manufacturers’

recommendations.

Sanding tools and dust extraction

It is necessary to use the right sanding tools in combination

with an operational dust extraction system to reach a high

quality result.

Cars are manufactured using different types of substrates

like plastics, aluminum, carbon fibre and different strength

metals. It is critical to use the recommended systems

according to the substrate.

Aluminum

A separate working place is needed for the repair and

preparation of aluminum. Preparation of aluminum and

steel substrates with the same tools will cause contact

corrosion.

A working place for aluminum preparation needs dedicated

equipment, e.g. separate sanding tools and dust extraction.

Carbon (CFK)

To avoid contamination between different substrates,

dedicated tooling should be used also for these types of

substrates.

Sanding tools need to be connected to the central dust

extraction system at the work station. This will minimise the

amount of sanding dust and ensure a high quality repair. It

is recommneded to follow the intructions and guidelines set

out by the tool manufacturer.

5

c) Dry sanding

All sanding steps are recommended by dry sanding, as it

ensures an economical and ecological process.

Dry sanding requires usage of the right tools and

appropriate sanding paper, following the recommendations

of the paint and abrasive manufacturer.

Sanding recommendations for all repair types can be found

in the written systems.

Both parties (paint and abrasive manufacturer) are eager

to optimize the process inside the bodyshop to achieve a

constant high quality repair.

Choosing the right sanding tool and material for the repair

type (substrate) will lead to high quality results.

Stainless steel Sanding fleece type Very Fine / P180 – P220

Existing finishes Sanding fleece type Ultra-Fine / P180 – P500

d) EP filler

To reach an optimum corrosion protection, special

products based on different resins are needed. Products

based on Epoxy resins show these characteristics.

Epoxy Primers give very good adhesion and corrosion

protection. They also have a very high resistance to

chemicals and humidity.

Note:

EP Primer Fillers shall be used only for the following repair

types:

Seam Sealing

Underbody Protection

Windscreen Bonding

System A

Autocoat BT LV 350 Antistatic Silicone Remover

The surface has to be cleaned with the selected surface cleaner and a clean cloth. Immediately thereafter, the surface has to be wiped thoroughly dry with high quality absorbent degreasing cloths. Two cloths have to be used, as one cloth will merely shift rather than remove dirt and grease. The surface cleaner should not evaporate there the contamination on the surface will remain. The surface has to be wiped thoroughly dry before the degreaser evaporates.

5 Color information

a) Color formula

Automatchic

The advanced Automatchic combined with the Mixit Pro color retrieval software

delivers simple and high quality color matching. Operation is straightforward. After

reading the color, the software automatically searches for the closest color formula

and optimizes this formula if needed. For difficult colors, Automatchic offers a unique

step that automatically tints the chosen formula. Based on state of the art LED

technology, it is easy to position and handle. A light barrier prevents interference from

external light sources, so that there can be no mistakes in color reading. With

Automatchic, you can find the best color formula for almost any car color on the road.

Mixit Pro

Mixit Pro is Sikkens’ easy to use color retrieval software. When connected to the

Internet, Mixit Pro synchronizes to download the latest available updates of formula

and software. Due to its step-by-step help function, searching and finding the right

color is very easy as well as very reliable. Beyond formula retrieval Mixit Pro has

everything you need for fast and efficient color management. It supports you with a

range of reporting functions. Including consumption analyses, access to recalculated

mixes and reporting of materials costs per job.

Colormap FD

Colormap FD is a visual color documentation organized per color group. It consists of

4,671 solid colors and 3,688 metallic/pearl colors, linked to more than 150,000 car

colors. It is user friendly, easy to handle while finding an accurate match.

Online and mobile color retrieval

Mixit Online is an application that enables color matching online. Via a clear

instruction path users are quickly provided with reliable information. There are three

search options available: manufacturer, house colors or color groups. The program

then determines, depending on the accuracy of the input, the colors. In addition, the

users are also provided with further information quickly and reliably: this includes an

overview of the variants and the indication of where the color in the color

documentation Color Scala Pro can be found.

Mixit Online on your mobile device. The Sikkens Mixit Online brings the convenience

of its color retrieval system to mobile phones. It now can be accessed 24 hours a day,

7 days a week from any mobile phone or tablet that connects to the Internet and is

available free of charge. Just download the smartphone app “iMatchColor”.
