DESCRIPTION

One of the communities i'm working with have no homes . that was supposed to be used to build proper homes to these people (the first ones in their lives). The homes he built are in terrible conditions and very unsafe to live in, and now the tribe can face the risks of living during the rainy season in the very fragile tents nearby a river near their hamlet where they have to live now, which will be completely flooded and full of water stagnation/contamination and water related diseases during the next months. We are trying to help them by fix the houses until the end of this month!

NEEDS

HISTORY AND NEEDS

This tribal community consists on more than 40 families that, due to not being able to live in their land, had to live nearby the river in Wai, without houses better than tents

made of cloths and plastic waste, with no electricity, safe drinking water or toilets. The NGO Shramik found a land to

them (in Menwali, 5km from Wai) and applied for a government scheme for building proper houses.

Page 3: Menwali hamlet

HISTORY AND NEEDS

The scheme was implemented to build 20 houses but, due to a corrupted contractor and besides the efforts of Shramik and other well intended individuals trying to help these people get the houses they deserved, the hamlet today is still half constructed and without basic living conditions. In fact, not only due to the lack of drinking water and proper roofs to protect them from rain, the community is not living there because of the fear of a wall falling upon their family while sleeping.

In the next slides we will show the problems that need to be solved in order to provide these people a safe place to live, we are planning to finish the construction and we kindly thank you for all the attention!

THE HOUSES

A row of 20 houses (5.5x6.7m each) made with cheap materials and poor skills

Page 5: Menwali hamlet

THE GAP ON THE ROOF

The roof has a gap of about 3 inches, that needs to be closed with flat bended metal sheet

Page 6: Menwali hamlet

THE LACK OF PROPER FIXATION FOR THE ROOF.

Unsafe fixations (e.g. roof fixed using nails and fragile wires)

Page 7: Menwali hamlet

PARTS OF THE ROOF THAT ALREADY FLEW AWAY

And the rest of the roof will be destroyed as well if not fixed before the monsoon

Page 8: Menwali hamlet

WALLS ALREADY BROKEN

Lot of walls shake if applied minimum force due to the bad quality of the mortar

All of them need to be plastered with a proper misture of cement, and some of them need to be rebuilt

Page 9: Menwali hamlet

QUALITY OF THE WALLS Some perpendicular walls aren’t made with

interlocked bricks

They will easely fall as a whole block

Page 10: Menwali hamlet

QUALITY OF THE MORTAR

The mortar as almost no cement and is full of big granulated sand

CRACKS ON THE DOOR SUPPORTS

In the upper part of the doors, The type of stone used is so weak that there is already risk to fall apart It has to be replaced with better stones or even Strong wood

Page 12: Menwali hamlet

LACK OF FLOOR

The floor needs to be cemented due to its lack of stability when wet

Page 13: Menwali hamlet

OXIDATION OF METAL PARTS

The metal had no proper painting and its completely spoiled (application of some oxide paint is required)

Page 14: Menwali hamlet

LACK OF WATER SUPPLY There is a bore well nearby but there is no water on the ground, it’s always completely dried

The idea is to use the roof as a rain harvesting catchment area and diverse the water to a watertank and recharde the ground water level through the well
