Team Based Learning/Health Mentors

September 21, 2011What isInterprofessional Education?

University of Colorado | DenverAnschutz Medical CampusInterprofessional Education

The Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC) of the University of Colorado was intentionally designed to facilitate collaborative, interprofessional education. The Office of Interprofessional Education is the next step in realizing this long term vision of transforming the delivery of health care to meet the needs of the new century.

Our longitudinal curriculum is being integrated into pre-clinical and clinical training for ALL University of Colorado health profession students and will teach and evaluate campus-wide student competencies in teamwork, collaborative interprofessional practice and quality and safety, with a particular focus on vulnerable and under served populations.

Our goal is to create a curricular thread that is shared across all schools and programs that begins the day that our students walk on campus, and continues throughout their educational experience. Interprofessional Education will weave Interprofessional content deeply into the experience of each student and into the sites where they will do their clinical training. Our three core curriculums are: The Health Mentors Program, The Clinical Transformations Program, and The Clinical Rotations Program.

The Health Mentors Program All incoming health professions students are grouped into interprofessional, seven-person teams, which are paired with a health mentor from the community. Health mentors are individuals with a chronic disease and/or disability. Teams meet with their mentors on four Wednesday afternoons, over a period of 6 months. Discussion topics include: life and

health history, access to care, wellness, safety and medication reconciliation. Embedded within the curriculum is an exploration of roles of the different health professions, as well as teamwork and communication skills. Our Health Mentors Program is modeled after the program developed at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA.

What is theHealth Mentors Program?

Our full roll-out of the Health Mentors program took place on September 21st and was a significant accomplishment and success. Over 600 students were divided into eighty-five interprofessional teams of seven, who got to know their mentors and learn from their health stories.

Following their student team meetings, mentors mingled during a mixer in the Education North Building Student Academic Community. This SAC space is now under renovation, and will reopen as a student café later this year. We will host our Mentor Mixers in this new setting starting in February 2012.

Betty Autrey: A volunteer’s volunteer.During Health Mentor orientation on August 30th, several mentors arrived about an hour early as the program was setting up. One early-bird mentor, Betty Autrey, was using a walker following her recent hip surgery, which wasn’t slowing her down.

Betty offered to help organize and distribute registration materials, greeted mentors as they arrived and became one of our crew.

On September 21st, Betty again arrived early, and asked if another mentor who she met at orientation, had arrived. Betty brought her new friend a packet of resources on where to obtain no cost and low cost medications for Parkinson’s Disease, which she and another mentor had discussed.

We’re very fortunate to have Betty as a health mentor, both for the insights she shares with her student team, and for her helpful nature and kindness, towards the well-being of those around her.

to them to cover the costs associated with their recovery. Some of the ways the fund will contribute are by helping with wheelchairs and needed equipment, as well as enabling patients’ homes (kitchens and bathrooms) and vehicles to become accessible. The license plate will be available in January 2012.

Chris is on Team 44 with the following students: Adam Borgia–Dentistry; Hien Doan- Medicine; Lauren Milleville-Physician Assistant; Lisa Nicodemus- Nursing; Branden Petrun-Medicine and Shannon Wathen-Pharmacy.

GettinG to know You...

Mentor Chris Chappell is a former Vice President for Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. He was in a mountain biking accident in 2000, which resulted in a traumatic spinal cord injury that left him a quadriplegic. He successfully returned to his work as an investment banker at MSSB, but decided to make a major career change last year, joining the staff at Craig Hospital as the Graduate Relations Coordinator. Chris was a patient at Craig and later volunteered as a peer mentor for 10 years.Once on the Craig Hospital staff, Chris came up with an idea to create a Craig Hospital license plate to benefit Spinal Cord and Brain Injury patients. He formed a petition and went to work on gathering signatures to present to state senators for sponsorship. His compassion towards the cause and devotion to the task at hand paid off. Colorado Senate Bill 11-003 was created and sponsored by Senator Nancy Spence. On Thursday, June 1, Governor Hickenlooper signed House Bill 1298 into law.

Through the sales of each of these specialty license plates, $20 will be contributed to the Patient Assistance Fund at Craig Hospital. These funds will assist patients who have depleted the monetary resources available

Chris watches the first Craig license plates come off the line at Colorado’s

oldest (1873) prison; Colorado Territory Correctional Facility in Canon City.
