1 Men’s Health Month During the month of June, men are encouraged to prioritize their health and wellness. The first item of business is to receive an annual physical wellness check. It is common for men to perceive physicals as a sign of weakness or be afraid to learn they have an illness. Another justification to skip the doctor is the absence of symptoms to warrant a check-up. While exercise and a good diet are great for your health, it does not mean you are immune to illness. A quick trip to the doctor is crucial in identifying any health conditions and provides the opportunity to start treatment. Many illnesses can be cured and treated in the early stages, even before you have symptoms. For example, early detection of diabetes may help prevent issues such as vision loss and impotence. By receiving an annual check-up, you can stay ahead of the game. All collateral materials must be reviewed by the direct service staff before the initial visit with the client to determine if prior incidents have occurred and/or if there is potential for assaultive behavior. If, after reading the collateral, the staff person has any questions, he/she should speak with the unit supervisor. PROCEDURE: 1. MAINTAIN YOUR SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS: Distance yourself and others from the person engaging in assaultive behavior if feasible, OR use emergency intervention techniques (please refer to CPI training) as appropriate. 2. Men’s Health Month

During the month of June, men are encouraged to prioritize their health and wellness. The first item of

business is to receive an annual physical wellness check. It is common for men to perceive physicals as a

sign of weakness or be afraid to learn they have an illness. Another justification to skip the doctor is the

absence of symptoms to warrant a check-up. While exercise and a good diet are great for your health, it does

not mean you are immune to illness. A quick trip to the doctor is crucial in identifying any health conditions

and provides the opportunity to start treatment. Many illnesses can be cured and treated in the early stages,

even before you have symptoms. For example, early detection of diabetes may help prevent issues such as

vision loss and impotence. By receiving an annual check-up, you can stay ahead of the game.

Below is a list of screenings and tests that are vital to men’s health:

• Blood Pressure test • Colon Cancer screening

• Cholesterol test • Prostate Cancer screening

• Diabetes test • Skin Cancer check

Policy of the Month: Client Assault Incident By Administration Direct service staff should be prepared and alert to potential situations that may lead to an assault incident

while working with clients. All collateral materials must be reviewed by the direct service staff before the initial

visit with the client to determine if prior incidents have occurred and/or if there is potential for assaultive

behavior. If, after reading the collateral, the staff person has any questions, he/she should speak with the unit

supervisor.

PROCEDURE:

1. MAINTAIN YOUR SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS: Distance yourself and others from the person

engaging in assaultive behavior if feasible, OR use emergency intervention techniques (please refer to CPI

training) as appropriate.

2. CONTACT A PROTECTION AGENCY, if you feel it is necessary. Utilize existing community services just

as you would if you or anyone else were being assaulted outside of the service setting. Examples of resources

would be mall, building or campus security officers or police.

3. SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION for self and others as needed.

4. CONTACT YOUR SUPERVISOR as soon as possible. The unit supervisor will assist you and provide

support. You will be asked to come into the unit office to discuss the incident. If you sustained an injury requiring

more than routine first aid, you will be sent to the agency’s medical clinic for care. You will also be asked to fill

out the appropriate Workers’ Compensation forms and the Employee Incident Report Form.

for names of family, friends, etc.

7. ENSURE THAT REGIONAL CENTER IS NOTIFIED of the incident regardless of the hour or day. Be sure

your supervisor will make notification.

spent the day exploring the fair, riding a few rides

and petting the animals. We saw amazing art and

flowers from local people along with way too many

MUST HAVE things for the home. Doesn’t everyone

need a 12-person Jacuzzi with swim jets?

Or maybe a Handi Dandi cleans all mop/scrubber!

Thank you to staff who made this possible. Stacy

Meyer, Jacqueline Gritton, Kathy Hartland, Mark

Drews, Mark Ferreri, and Cheryl Purdy. Also, a

HUGE THANK YOU to the County Fair for Free

What’s Going On? June was a month of transitions for us. We said goodbye to

our dear Jacque as she goes off to school to become a

Nurse! We are excited to see what the future holds for her

and we hope she can come back for a visit and tell us all

about her accomplishments. On a happy note, we

welcomed our new Accounting Clerk, Lang Yin! We are

excited to have her on board and we would like to thank

everyone for their patience during this time of change.

We celebrated our goodbye and welcome with lunch from

our favorite place, Tender Greens and finished things off

with a delicious cake from Extraordinary Desserts.

From left to right: DOO Claudia Hutchinson, CFO Pebbles Dumon, Enterprise Account Manager Anna Lees, and CEO Jim Jenkins

We would like to thank Enterprise Holdings Foundation for their generous donation of $2,000 dollars to CCC. The check was presented by Anna Lees, Account Manager, and will be used to fund our Butterfly Club. Thank you!

Redwood Coast Ukiah By Jennifer Bilstein What’s Going On? Wow! June has already come and gone and we’re now officially

half way through the year! We hope everyone had a fun month

like we did! We’d first like to wish a big Happy Birthday to our

clients Fred, Bob, Cindy and CJ! And also to our DSA’s Ladessa

and Electra! Happy Birthday everyone! An especially fun birthday

party was Fred’s as he chose to spend his birthday with friends

on the Skunk Train.

As the summer months are now upon us it seems we’re busier

than usual! We started off this month by attending the annual

Redwood Empire Spring Fair. Our clients always enjoy going to

the fair to see all the animals and the excitement. June also

signals the start of the annual summer concert series Sundays in

the Park. Sundays in the Park is a fun event that our clients love

going to as it’s a free concert in the park, the music is always

good and if they feel like getting a bite to eat, the local restaurant

booths don’t leave you wanting for anything!

Some clients got to go up to Willits this month and take part in

the festivities of the annual Willits Frontier Days! The Willits

Frontier Days festival takes part over several days and includes

a Hometown Celebration, a horse show, a carnival, truck pulls,

rodeo events, concerts and a BBQ! Fun times for anyone around!

Our June CAC meeting was a success! This month, among other

things, we talked about quick, easy, healthy breakfasts. As we all

know our weekday mornings are usually busy but an easy,

healthy, ready-to-go breakfast could be very helpful. The clients

worked on making their breakfast dishes the evening before the

meeting with their staff and all who attended the meeting seemed

to really enjoy the variety of options that can be both healthy and

quick and easy. We had individual muffin tin frittatas, no cook

oatmeal parfaits with chia seeds, crockpot blueberry oatmeal,

savory breakfast muffins, and more. We sent them home with

recipes for healthy versions of pancakes and a list of topping and

mix-in ideas to add some great flavors to pancakes while still

staying as healthy as we can with them.

Client of the 2nd Quarter Joanna Y.

There are three words that describe Joanna and those words are warrior for life. Joanna has

been attending the Day Program in Imperial Valley for 5 years now. During her time with us, she

has experienced many health threats and ultimately persevered after making changes that have

improved her life drastically. Joanna is challenged with seizures and there was a period where

her health was greatly compromised. During that same time, she learned she was expecting.

Her pregnancy posed a great risk to her life. She fought through it and today she has a 2-year-

old daughter named Gloria! Gloria has brought many blessings to Joanna’s life and she has

now returned to the Day Program where she continues to make improvements. Joanna changed

her eating habits opting for healthier options and she exercises on a regular basis. She enjoys

going on walks and doing Zumba. This lifestyle change has helped Joanna’s seizures decrease

in frequency and have improved her overall health.

Congratulations Joanna! Keep up the great work!
