WHY DO WE

EAT POMEGRANATES

ON ROSH HASHANA?By Rabbi Aron Moss

Why do we eat pomegranates on Rosh Hashana?

I've seen it explained that "we should be fullof mitzvos and good deeds like the pome-granate is full of seeds." But there are other

fruits that are full of seeds. Couldn't we eatsomething a little tastier than a pomegranate?

Many people tell me that they are not involvedwith Judaism because they don't want to be a hyp-ocrite. Why come to shul for Rosh Hashana if Idon't go the rest of the year? How can I fast onYom Kippur if I don't keep Shabbos? What's thepoint of putting on Tefillin in the morning if Ithen eat a non-kosher breakfast? You can't pickand choose, they say.

This is wrong. While it is true that we can't pickand choose, nevertheless the non-observance ofone mitzvah does not cancel the observance of an-other. Because mitzvos are like the seeds of apomegranate.

Most fruits have a little cluster of seeds some-

where in their centre. But the pomegranate is fullof seeds, and every one of those seeds is selfcontained. Each seed is encrusted in its own littlebulb of fruit. It has its own distinct place, separatefrom all the other seeds.

A mitzvah is the same. Every mitzvah is a uni-verse unto itself, with its own spiritual power andits own unique blessing that it brings. Just becauseyou don't keep some mitzvos does not mean youshouldn't keep others. Each mitzvah you do plugsyou in to eternity, connects you with the Divine, and takes you higher. Every mitzvah is a uniqueopportunity for your soul to touch heaven. Themitzvos that you don't do shouldn't allow you tomiss this opportunity.

This is why the Talmud says, "Even the mostdisconnected soul is full of mitzvos like a pome-granate." A good deed has eternal worth, no matterwho does it. So if you find yourself doing onemitzvah when you still don't do others, you are nota hypocrite. You are a holy pomegranate.•

A parable from Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov:

A King had an only son, the apple of his eye. The Kingwanted his son to master different fields of knowledgeand to experience various cultures, so he sent him to afar-off country, supplied with a generous quantity of sil-ver and gold. Far away from home, the son squanderedall the money until he was left completely destitute. Inhis distress he resolved to return to his father's houseand after much difficulty, he managed to arrive at thegate of the courtyard to his father's palace.

In the passage of time, he had actually forgotten thelanguage of his native country, and he was unable toidentify himself to the guards. In utter despair he beganto cry out in a loud voice, and the King, who recognizedthe voice of his son, went out to him and brought himinto the house, kissing him and hugging him.

The meaning of the parable: The King is G-d. Theprince is the Jewish people, who are called "Children ofG-d" (Deuteronomy 14:1). The King sends a soul downto this world in order to fulfill the Torah and mitzvot. However, the soul becomes very distant and forgetseverything to which it was accustomed to above, and inthe long exile it forgets even its own "language." So itutters a simple cry to its Father in Heaven. This is theblowing of the shofar, a cry from deep within, express-ing regret for the past and determination for the future. This cry elicits G-d’s mercies, and He demonstrates His

abiding affection for His child and forgives him.

A parable from Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev:

A king was once traveling in the forest and lost his way, until he met a man who recognized that he was the kingand escorted his master out of the forest and back tohis palace. The king later rewarded him with many pres-ents, and elevated him to a powerful minister's post.

After a while, however, the man committed an actwhich was considered rebellious against the king, and hewas sentenced to death. Before he was taken out to beexecuted, the king granted him one last request.

The man said: “I request to wear the clothes I worewhen I escorted His Majesty when he was lost in the for-est, and that His Majesty should also wear the clothes hewore then.”

The king complied, and when they were both dressedin the garments they wore at the time of their meeting,he said, “By your life, you have saved yourself,” andcalled off the execution.

The meaning of the parable is that when G-d gave theTorah to Israel, he offered it first to all the nations ofthe world. They all refused, except the people of Israel, who willingly accepted the yoke of Heaven and fulfilledthe commandments of the Creator.

But now we have transgressed and rebelled, like theman in the parable, and with the arrival of the Day ofJudgment we are fearful indeed. So we blow the shofarto recall the shofar blowing that accompanied our orig-inal acceptance of the Torah and coronation of G-d.This merit stands by us, and G-d forgives us all our sinsand inscribes us immediately for a year of goodness andlife.•

HECHSHERIM

Q. Why aren't there hechsherim on the packaging ofall your products?

A. While we encourage companies to use logos, oftenthey aren’t prepared to go thru the costs for artworkchanges. Smaller companies may drop kosher. Webelieve that direct consumer demands to manufacturerscan be beneficial.

KOSHER LIST APPQ. Do you have plans to make an iphone app with the

kosher list?

A. Yes. It is going slower then hoped. At this stage,A PDF version that can be used via the Adobe PDFreader App is available and this is fully updated when-ever a Kosher contact is released.

SEVEN ELEVEN

Q. Are slurpies from 7-11 kosher?

A. Several years ago, 7-11 changed syrup suppliersfrom Schweppes - which were under Hechsher - toCCA. The syrups for the slurpies are manufactured atthe CCA African plant and we have been given no in-formation as to the Kosher status of these syrups. Wehave been in discussions with CCA and they haveagreed to look at sourcing some flavours from Irelandunder Kosher supervision. Unfortunately the resolutionis going slowly.

WATERFORDS

Q. Are Waterfords kosher in Melbourne?

A. Waterfords are made by P&N and the best of ourknowledge have never been checked. In line with themainstream policy of Kosher authorities worldwide, flavours used in soft drinks, juices and cordial (evenslurpies) require Kosher approval.

Melbourne Jews are returning rave reviews onthe culinary offerings at the city's newestkosher restaurant, "Off The Hook."

Given the current response, diners are not going tobe bored with the offerings available to them during theSukkot holiday at the new restaurant, which opened forbusiness just last month at 70A Kooyong Road in NorthCaulfield.

The fish and chips shop is operated by partners Den-nis Zilberman and Moshe Menahem and is already busilypreparing for the holiday onslaught.

A sukkah will be available for diners who choose toeat outside "under the clouds of glory" for the eight daysof the upcoming Sukkot holiday.

The restaurant was swamped as soon as it opened itsdoors in August by local foodies who had waited yearsfor such a shop.

"We didn't want to open another shwarma or falafelplace," explained Zilberman. "People should have an op-tion to buy kosher fish and chips."

The fave finger food beloved by Brits everywhere isconsidered a special treat in Melbourne as well -- but untilnow, Jews were left out of the loop.

Sisco, the chef at "Off the Hook," resolved thatproblem in short order with a unique menu that includesShabbos takeout foods as well potato cakes, fish fingers, fish cakes, salmon cakes, chips, and sushi packs.

"Our customers' favourite dish is the marinatedsalmon with sweet chilli or mango sauce," Zilbermansaid. "But the basic fish and chips is, of course, thestaple." Other sauces include the traditional tartar sauce, and garlic aioli.

One of the customers (who asked not to be identi-fied) mentioned that her veggy burger was the best she

had ever had, and "the tartar sauce was 'off the hook.' Itwas impossible to keep my 10-month-old from grabbingmy fish cake out of my hand," she smiled.

The response has been very positive, Zilberman said."People are excited about the shop. They tell me theyhave been waiting for a fish and chips shop in Melbournesince they were kids," he noted with satisfaction.

All sauces are prepared fresh on site. Gefilte fish ismade fresh "from scratch" on Thursdays and Fridays --the main fish used in the mix is blue grenadier.

"People are loving the gefilte fish," Zilberman said.Australian salmon is used in the salmon cakes, he added, because "we try to use as many local products as we can."The hake comes from South Africa and Namibia, headded.

In addition, the shop sells fresh fish to those whoare adventurous enough to prepare their own at home.Among the offerings are salmon, tuna, wild barramundiand blue grenadier. Zilberman also said he will order anyfish a customer wants to pre-order.

The fresh fish service is a special joy after an entireweekend of Shabbos meat meals. It is also a major ad-vantage since the regular fish market is closed on Mon-days -- never a problem for clients of Off The Hook, ofcourse.

Jewish women living high above the “lowest placeon the planet” this year have faced a tough chal-lenge in properly fulfilling the commandment of

family purity. At the point where the Judean Desert meets the

Negev, the small Israeli desert town of Arad sits on aridge overlooking the southern tip of the Dead Sea. Itselevation is approximately the same as the holy city ofJerusalem.

But even though the waters of the Dead Sea arefamed for their healing ability, one thing they cannot dois serve as a mikvah – a ritual pool of purifying “livingwaters.”

In Jewish law, only natural water from the world's

oceans, rivers, wells and spring-fed lakes – water in whichlife can survive -- can be used for a mikvah. Rain watercan also be collected in cisterns that feed into pools ad-joining the mikvahs in which Jewish women ritually pu-rify themselves. It is the mikvah that seals the holy bondof Jewish family life in the hours after sunset eachmonth.

But for the women of Arad, fulfillment of this keycommandment has come at a great price. For Chabadwomen, it has meant a trip of an hour or more to thecity of Be'er Sheva to find the closest mikvah that ad-heres to their Chassidic traditions.

In recent days, that has sometimes also meant a life-threatening gamble against the terrorists launching

rocket attacks on the city and surrounding areas.Arad has a mikvah. Unfortunately it has repeatedly

broken down and its kosher legal status has been calledinto question numerous times for more than a year. Redtape and other issues kept the city's religious authorityfrom attending to desperately needed repairs. Finally, acontractor was secured and the work finally began butthere was not enough money to complete the task.

“It's not that the repairs themselves are not going tobe done,” explained Tzila S., a member of the commu-nity. “They are. But that is all. The tiles on the walls, evenbefore this problem existed, were already cracked anddecades old. And now that workers have been in there, swinging hammers and all... “

In recent years, most mikvaos have pleasant andcomfortable facilities which greatly enhance observanceof this mitzva. Arad’s mikvah, sadly, does not come any-where close.

“The contractor is trying to work with us,” Tzila said.“He told us to pick out tiles, and explained how to keepthe cost down. I wanted to get pretty ones, so that even

if we don't have much, at least the walls should looknice.”

Since Arad's religious authority refused to pay, a fam-ily that could ill afford it took a personal loan to coverthe contractor's initial work beyond basic repairs. Butthe loan must be repaid. Worse, that sum only coveredthe first week's work. Much more still needs to be done.

“I don't know how we are going to do this,” Tzila ad-mitted. “But I believe – I must believe – that G-d willnot leave our community without a mikvah.”

Funds are desperately needed to complete the reno-vations. Those who wish to participate in this great spir-itual undertaking and reap the merit of this project areinvited to donate any amount to the Arad Mikvah Fundc/o Hana Levi Julian.

Funds may be sent via PayPal at [email protected] “Arad Mikvah Fund” in the memo. Checks may besent via snail mail. Contact Mrs. Julian via email for themail address, or call +972-54-310-1933.

May the merit of this mitzvah provide protection inkind!

health; it also helps control appetite. It is important tostay well hydrated, aiming to drink around 8-10 glassesof water throughout the day. Water is the best option,as it hydrates the body the most efficiently with the ben-efit of being calorie-free.

Choose lower fat optionsJewish cooking, although delicious, is often high in

fat and/or sugar. These foods are calorie dense, and ifconsumed in large amounts will most likely result inweight gain. Therefore, it is important to try and loweryour fat intake by: Cutting the fat off meat and takingthe skin off chicken, avoiding large amounts of mayon-naise or oily based dressings, filling up on salad ratherthan challah, baking, grilling or steaming rather thanfrying foods, choosing low-fat or no-fat dairy products, swapping unhealthy desserts like pastries, cakes, biscuitsand ice cream with fruit and compote.

Avoid filling up on challah It’s easy to fill up on challah before you have even

started main course. However, after consuming just twoslices of challah, you have already eaten the necessarycalories needed for one adult meal. Any additional foodwill lead to additional calories, leading to additionalweight gain. To avoid this dangerous situation swap chal-lah for salad or wait until main course to begin eating.

Control your portionsControlling portion size is one of the easiest ways to

control your food intake and prevent weight gain. A

healthy meal shouldlook like this on yourplate: ¼ protein (meat, chicken, fish or egg), ¼ carbohy-drates (bread, rice, pasta or potatoes), ½ salad/vegeta-bles, fruit and water on the side.

Eat slowly, engage in conversation It takes an estimated 20 minutes for your body to

process that you have eaten and that you are full. There-fore, eating slowly and engaging in conversation will giveyour body the time it needs to acknowledge it has eaten. This will prevent overconsumption of food and the hor-rible feeling of being “too full.”

Watch your alcohol intakeAlcohol has a lot of calories, making it an easy way

to gain weight. If you chose to drink alcohol, try andavoid large amounts and use mixers like soda water, fresh lemon/lime or a diet soft drink to prevent excesscalorie intake.

Be activeExercise is an important component of physical

health, disease prevention, stress relief, and weight main-tenance. Energy consumed through food and drinkneeds to be balanced with energy expended through ex-ercise in order to control and maintain a healthy weight.Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exer-cise (brisk walk, slow run, cycling, swimming etc.) mostdays of the week to keep fit and healthy.

Sleep soundlyPoor quality sleep has been linked to being over-

weight and/or obese. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of goodquality sleep a night. To achieve this, ensure that yourenvironment is conducive to sleep (i.e. not too light, comfortable bed, quiet, not too hot or cold) and thatyou are in a good sleep routine. Avoid large meals, heavyexercise and stimulants (e.g. caffeine) just beforebedtime.

Enjoy yourselfEating is associated with family gatherings, holidays,

friendly catch-ups and good times. It is important notto take away from the excitement of the festivities bycounting calories and being too strict with your diet. Tryincorporating some of the above steps in to your holidaycelebrations, as well as into your lifestyle, and remembereverything in moderation is a healthy eating philosophy.
