Student NewsFormer nursing student shortlisted for NHS Regional Leadership Recognition Award
RussellYateswrites:“TheLeadershipSummitandRegionalLeadershipRecognitionAwardssaw200HealthandSocialCarecolleaguesacrosstheregionconnectandbeinspiredbynewandemergingleadershiptalentataneventheldinSheffieldinDecember.
“MatildeRahtz,whocompletedherMNursingprogrammelastsummer,wasnominatedinthecategoryofExcellenceinPatientExperienceandwasoneofthethreeshortlistedcandidates.
“MatildeimplementedaserviceimprovementprojectaspartofherprofessionalinternshipwithaCAMHS(ChildandAdolescentMentalHealth)team.Sheapproachedtheprojectverymuchwithinthespiritofpatient-centrednursing.
Matildedidnothavepreconceivedideasabout
howthepatientexperiencecouldbeimproved,andconsultedpatientstounderstandhowtheyexperiencedtheservice.Inanalysingthepatientexperience,Matildeusedprocessmappingtoidentifyasmallchangewhichcouldbemadetotheservicetobringaboutthegreatestimprovementtothepatientexperience.Theoutcomewastheimplementationofapilotprojectwhichrequiredachangeintheworkinghoursofsomestaff.ThisrequiredverycarefulhandlingonthepartofMatilde.Afterextensivediscussion,sevenmembersofstaffagreedtoworkflexiblytoallowtheservicetooffersomeeveningappointmentsfortheten-week,pilotperiod.”
Thejudgessaid:‘aproactiveapproachwhichisajoytoseeinsomeoneatthebeginningofnodoubtaverylongandsuccessfulcareer.Longmayitcontinue.’
Russellsaid“theawardsaredesignedforexperiencedNHSstaffanditisveryunusualforastudenttobeshortlisted.”
MidSoc hold two-day perinatal loss and bereavement event
TheMidwiferySocietyrecentlyheldatwo-dayeventonperinatallossandbereavement.EachdayincludedtrainingaroundinfantlossandthegroupheardfromChantalLockey,ChiefExecutiveoftheFoundationforInfantLossTraining,whoisalsoabereavedmotherherself.
Theeventwasagreatsuccessandwasattendedbymidwiferystudents,staffandqualifiedmidwivesfromaroundtheregion.Thegroupalsoheardtalksfrom4Louis,anorganisationthatprovidesmemoryboxesforbereavedparents,Reflect-apregnancyandlosssupportgroupbasedinYork–aswellasTheLullabyTrustandSANDS(Stillbirthandneonataldeathcharity). York collaborates with children’s hospice for major new venture
TheUniversityofYorkandMartinHouseChildren’sHospicelaunchedarevolutionarynewmulti-disciplinarycentrecommittedtoleadingresearchonthemanagement,careandsupportofchildrenwithlife-limitingconditionsandtheirfamilies.
TheMartinHouseResearchCentre,ledbytheDepartmentofHealthSciencesinaninnovativejointventurewiththehospice,willconductworkfocusingontheprioritiesoffamiliesandtheprofessionalswhocareandworkforthem.
TheCentrewillbringtogetherexpertsincludingacademicsfromtheUniversitiesofYorkandLeeds,whowillworkwithstafffromMartinHouseChildren’sHospice,healthandcareprofessionalsandresearchersfromtheUKandbeyond.
LaunchedonFriday,13JanuaryattheUniversityofYork’sKing’sManor,representativesfromnationalcharities,researchers,parentsandyoungpeoplegatheredtolearnaboutthecentreandhearfromnationalfiguresworkingwithinchildren’spalliativecare.Parentsandyoungpeoplewithlife-limitingconditionswillalsoleadasessionsharingtheirexperiencesandopinions.
DrLornaFraser,SeniorLecturerinHealthSciencesandDirectoroftheMartinHouseResearchCentre,said:“Thisisaveryexciting,much-neededinitiativewhichwillallowustoundertakehighqualityresearchonareasthatareimportanttochildrenandyoungpeoplewithlife-limitingconditions,theirfamiliesandtheclinicianscaringforthem.TheoutputsoftheCentre’sresearchshouldbetheevidencewhichwillhelptoensurethatallchildrenandfamiliesreceiveequitable,highqualitycare.”
AngelaMonaghan,ChiefExecutiveofMartinHouseChildren’sHospice,said:“Asahospicewithalong-standingcommitmenttoresearch,weareimmenselyexcitedaboutthelaunchoftheMartinHouseResearchCentre.Wearedelightedthatthisexceptionalnewinitiativewillenableustobuildastrongerevidencebasebydevelopingresearchinthischallengingarea,enablingustomakearealdifferencetochildren,youngpeopleandtheirfamilieswhoneedpalliativecareservicesandtothestaffwhocareforthem.”
Hematology project aims for faster, better care for patients with blood diseasesPatientsstrugglingwithblooddisordersmaylookforwardtomorerapidandefficienttreatmentfromtheoutcomesoftheHARMONYproject,aninitiativethataimstocreatearoadmapforbetteraccessandcareforpatientswithvariousblooddiseaseswiththeuseofbigdata.
TheEpidemiologyandCancerStatisticsGroup,ledbyProfessorEveRoman,isoneof51partnersfrom11Europeancountries,includingsevenpharmaceuticalcompaniestotakepartintheproject.HARMONYwillputtogetheranonymouspatientdatatounlockvaluableknowledgeonmultiplemyeloma,acutemyeloidleukemia,acutelymphoblasticleukemia,chroniclymphocyticleukemia,non-Hodgkinslymphoma,myelodysplasticsyndromesandblooddisordersininfantsandchildren.
HARMONYwillbuildonpre-existing,long-lastingcollaborationsbetweenacademics,clinicians,patientorganisationsandthepharmaceuticalindustry.Itwillfurtheradvancemanagementofthesediseasesthroughamoreefficientprocessoftreatmentdevelopmentandrapiddecision-making.Theexpectedoutcomewillbebetterprognosisandquickerimprovedtreatmentdecisions.

Review shows limited progress in digitising NHS records
Healthscientistshaveshownthat,inthe25yearssincetheNHSwastaskedwithdigitisingpatientrecords,therehasbeenlimitedprogressmade.
Thereview,thefirstofitskindtoaddressprogressofelectronicrecordimplementationinNHSsecondarycareorganisations,showedthatlimitedguidanceonITimplementationandunderestimatingthelevelofchangetotheworkinglivesofstaffmembers,weresomeofthereasonswhylittleprogresshasbeenmadetowardsbecomingafullydigitisedNHS.
Researchersarguedthatthehighnumberofchallengesthatwereuncovered,whichalsoincludedconfusionoverhowpolicyambitionswouldbefunded,highlightedthescaleofthecomplexityinimplementingtechnologyinhealthcaresystems.
DrArabellaScantlebury,researchfellowattheDepartmentofHealthSciences,said:“ItisdifficultforthoseoutsideoftheNHSsystemtovisualisethescaleofthisproject;therearehundredsofdepartmentsandhealthcareorganisations,usingdifferentITsystems,tryingtoshareimportantinformationaboutapatient.
“Onewayofunderstandingthecomplexity,isifweimagineinvitinganumberoffriendstoaneventusingonesystem,atextmessageforexample,onlyforthemtoposttheiranswersbackonseveraldifferentportals,Facebook,voicemail,andsoon;thiswouldbecomeadifficultcommunicationsexercise.
“Andwhatifoneoftheportalsusedwasaportalyoudidn’thave?Addinthefactthatpermissionmightbeneededbeforeyoushareyourresponseanditstartstogetverycomplicated.Ifwescalethisproblemup
significantly,thenwegetsomeinsightintothedigitalcommunicationschallengesfacedbytheNHS.”
Theteamreviewedpolicydocumentsandevaluationstoexploretheextentofprogressthathasbeenmadeandtotryandunderstandwhethercommonmistakeswerebeingrepeated.
ThereviewshowedthatprogresswaslimitedtotheintroductionofITinfrastructure,suchasNHSSpine,whichprovidesnetworksupportforelectronicrecords,allowinginformationtobesharedacrossthemanydifferentsystemsusedbyNHSdepartments.
DrScantleburysaid:“Therehavebeenattemptstoimplementelectronicrecordssince1992,butassomanyhavefailed,itistimetoaskwhy?Hospitalsneedtomakeinformeddecisionsaboutintroducingnewsystems,butguidance,underpinnedbyresearchintotheprosandconsofsuchsystems,islacking.
“PreviousattemptstoimplementelectronicrecordshaveinvolveddecisionmakingateitheracentralNHSleveloralocalone,butthereisalsoanargumentfordecisionstobecontrolledatbothlevels.
“Ourreview,however,suggeststhatwecannotrecommendoneapproachorproduceguidancebecausethereisnorealunderstandingorrobustevidenceintotheprosandcons,aswellascost,ofdifferentimplementationprocesses.Rigorousanalysisoffuturepoliciesisneededandshouldbeconductedinatimelywaytoensuretheresultsarevaluable.
“Itcostsmoneyeverytimeapolicyfailstoachieveitspurpose,soitisessentialthatgoingforwardthesamemistakesarenotmade.ThemoreinformationandguidanceonITimplementationthereisavailable,themorelikelyhospitalscanstarttomakeprogressindigitisingpatientrecordstoimprovehealthcareprovision.”

Society actually does want policies that benefit future generations
RichsocietiesliketheUKarechangingtheplanet–fortheworse.HumanlifeistakingaheavytollontheEarth,itsclimateanditsvariousecosystems.
Thisgenerationisconsumingtheplanet,butitisfuturegenerations–peoplelivingmanycenturiesfromnow,aswellasourchildrenandgrandchildren–whowillbearthegreatestcosts.ProfessorHilaryGrahamfromtheDepartmentofHealthSciencesandProfessorPiranWhitefromtheEnvironmentDepartmentdiscussthisintheirarticleforTheConversation.
Takeclimatechange,forexample.Currentestimatessuggestthattheinternationalsafe
thresholdsetbytheParisAgreement–ofamaximum2oCincreaseinglobaltemperature–willbebreachedby2050.Withoutdecisiveaction,temperaturesaresettorisebyatleast4oCby2100.
By2050,achildborntodaywillbeintheir30s,andislikelytobeaparent;inrichsocieties,manycouldanticipatebeingalivein2100.Theywillbetheoneslivingthroughthis.
Howfuturegenerationsarerepresentedinpolicy-makingisoneofthebiggestquestionsofourtime.Wemightexpectthatprotectingfuturegenerationswouldbeacentralconcern,butthestandardapproachtopolicy-makingistoprioritisetheinterestsofcurrentgenerations.

LEGO therapies study launches new child mental health centre
AnewchildmentalhealthcentrewhichusesLEGOtherapiestohelpchildrenwithautismhasbeenlaunchedbystafffromtheDepartmentofHealthSciencesandtheHullYorkMedicalSchool.
Mentalhealthproblemsrelatedtochildhoodphobias,socialisationissuesconnectedtoautismanddetectingautismindeafchildren,willbethefirstresearchareasoftheCentre,whichwaslaunchedinpartnershipwithLeedsandYorkPartnershipFoundationNHSTrust.
ProfessorBarryWright,fromtheDepartmentofHealthSciencesandDirectorofthenewCentre,said:“Traditionallychildandadolescentmentalhealthresearchisbasedaroundinterventionsthathavebeenusedinadultpopulations,butweaimtomoveawayfromthismodelwiththelaunchofthenewCentre.
“Wehavestronginvolvementfromyoungpeopleindesigningandrunningourresearch,andchildrenandfamiliesarerightatthecentreofourthinkingasweplanfurtherresearch.”
ThenewCentrewillaimtodeterminewhetherthebehaviouralcharacteristicsofautismaremanifestedinthesamewayinbothdeafandhearingchildren,withaviewtoadaptingcurrentscreeningandassessmentmethodstosuitdeafchildren.

Trials Unit writing week Grand Prix on track
TheTrialsUnitFebruary2017writingweekfoundallsixteamsontopformfinelytuned.Inpreparationforwritingweek,KatChattertongaveanenthusiasticandinformativetalkanddemonstrationofQUALTRIXwhichwasmuchappreciated.
Goodplanning,teambondingandabitofcompetitivenessforthetrophy,resultedinanastonishingamountofwritingbeingachieved.Thisincludedworkingonpapersatvariousstagesofdevelopmentfromdraftingtorespondingtopeercomments,writinggrantapplicationsandtrialprotocolsandabookchapter.
Congratulationstoeveryonefortheirprogress,smallorlarge,andinparticulartoBrooklandswhocarriedoffthetrophyandsomeveryfetchinguniquebaseballcaps.

Putting mental health first
OnFriday12May,HullYorkMedicalSchoolwillhostanational‘mentalhealthinmedicalschools’conference.Theconference,whichwilltakeplaceintheARRCAuditorium,willbringtogetherrepresentativesfrommedicalschoolsacrossthecountrytoshareexperienceandbestpracticewhensupportingstudentswithmentalhealthproblems.
Recentyearshaveseenmuchhighernumbersofuniversitystudentsreportingmentalhealthproblemsacrossallsubjects,andmedicineisnoexception.Whilstthismayindicatereducedstigma,italsosuggestsstudentsexperiencearangeofchallengesintheirearlyadultlives,withanincreasingneedtoestablishhighqualitysupportiveprocesses.
Theconferencewillfeaturepresentationsfrom12ofthe21medicalschoolsinattendance,andanalysethetypesofsupportthatuniversitiesmustofferinordertomeetthechangingneedsofmedicalstudents.

TheRightHonourable,theLordMayorofYork,CouncillorDaveTaylor,recentlyvisitedtheDepartmentaspartofhiscivicduties.
TheMayorwasjoinedbytheLadyMayoress,SheriffofYorkandtheSheriff’sladyandmetkeyDepartmentalstaff,aswellashavingatouroftheclinicalsimulationunit.

Thisisgreatnewshelpingustosavemoneyandhaveapositiveimpactontheenvironment.TheDepartmentandGreenImpact’saimistocontinuetoreducetheamountofprintingandphotocopying,butweneedeveryone’shelptoachievethis.ThereducingdepartmentalprintingcostsdocumentcreatedbytheITTeamofferstipsonalternativestoprintingandphotocopying.
InJanuarytheDepartmentcollectivelyraisedover£387fortheYorkToiletTwinningcampaign!Themoneyraisedwillhelptobuildtoiletsinareasthatdonothaveaccesstopropersanitaryconditions.Weraisedenoughtoprovidetoiletsforawholeschoolblock,plustwoindividualtoilets(typicallysharedbetweensixpeople).CertificateswillbeappearingontoiletsaroundtheDepartmentshowingthelocationsofoursupportedtoilets.Thankyoutoeveryonewhodonatedtothecampaign.OuraimistotwineverytoiletintheDepartment,solookoutforfurtherfundraisingeventsinthefuture!

PennyBroadleywrites“TheDepartmentandHarrogateandDistrictSoroptimistsareworkingwithChildlineZimbabwetoimproveaccessforallchildreninZimbabwetotheservicesofChildline.AtarecentmeetingoftheHarrogateandDistrictSoroptimists,DrAmandaMason-Jones,SeniorLecturerinGlobalPublicHealthandStellaMotsi,NationalDirectorofChildlineZimbabwe,wereinvitedasguestspeakers.ThemeetingheardthatChildlineZimbabwecurrentlyreceives50,000callsamonthfromchildren,themajorityofwhom(70%)reportsexualabuse.
ChildlineZimbabwecurrentlyhastwocallcentres,oneinHarareandtheotherinBulawayoandtheyareveryawarethatthepoorerruralareasofZimbabwehaveverylimitedaccesstocommunicationchannels.ThismeansthattheyoungpeopleintheseareasdonothaveeasyaccesstoChildline.Inordertoimprovethis,ChildlineZimbabwearetryingtosetupmobilephoneaccessintheseareassochildrencanaccessanduseadedicatedmobilephone,freeofcharge,toringChildlineforhelpandadvice.
