2015 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
From the backpack drives to the Share the Warmth coat drives to Food 4 Families canned food drives, the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Magnet® nurses coordinate various projects to benefit the community.
The backpack drive encourages MedStar Georgetown University Hospital associates to purchase a backpack and fill it with as many school supplies as possible, including safety scissors, pens, pencils, glue, graph paper, index cards, and more. In 2015, our Magnet nurses collected an impressive 269 backpacks.
During the holiday season, our Magnet nurses accepted nonperishable packaged food to benefit underserved populations in the D.C. area as part of the Magnet nurses’ Food 4 Families food drive. MedStar Georgetown University Hospital associates met the challenge and the goal was surpassed with more than 8,400 nonperishables and over $2,200 in donations.
During the winter months, the Magnet nurse champions organized the annual Share the Warmth coat drive during which associates donate their gently worn coats to be given to those in need. In 2015, our associates donated 482 coats.

Caring for the Whole Community
Letter From the President
Since our hospital’s beginning in 1898, we remain rooted in the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis—care of the whole person. Caring for our community also means reinvesting in programs and providing charity care and community-based health services. Some of our offerings include:
• The Kids Mobile Medical Clinic/Ronald McDonald Care Mobile providing medical and behavioral care to more than 44,000 children and adolescents
• A team of cancer screening outreach specialists who conduct cancer risk screenings and educational programs to educate the community on the importance of early detection and identifying risk factors
• Multiple MedStar Georgetown University Hospital physicians volunteer their time at the HOYA Clinic in Southeast D.C., a partnership with Georgetown University and the D.C. community providing free health care to homeless, underserved and uninsured people.
On behalf of our entire organization, thank you for supporting our efforts.
Sincerely,
Michael C. SachtlebenPresident, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Senior Vice President, MedStar Health
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital has served the District’s most underserved neighborhoods in Wards 4, 6, 7, and 8 with mobile medical care since 1992, providing 50,000 patient visits to children and adolescents. In December 2015, thanks to The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington, D.C., members of the community officially opened a new state-of-the-art KIDS Mobile Medical Clinic/Ronald McDonald Care Mobile with a ceremony and ribbon cutting.
“Because of the support of our partners, our staff can be more efficient, have a reliable office and better serve our patients in a comfortable environment,” said Matthew Levy, MD, division chief, Community Pediatrics at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
Dr. Levy and his team gave tours of the new care mobile, which measures 500 square feet with larger exam tables and an expanded lab and waiting area. Some of the services offered include well visits, immunizations, fluoride varnish, nutritional counseling, sick visits, ophthalmology, and mental health services.
D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen were also on hand and praised the new facility.
“Every child, regardless of income or circumstance, deserves quality health care. I am grateful to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital,” said Norton.
