TASK 2

HOW OUR FILM REPRESENTS DIFFERENT SOCIAL GROUPSBY ZAK KNIGHT

Page 2: Media task two

GENDERIn our opening sequence there are very stereotypical representations of gender, the two characters portray a paranoid and protective man and a defenceless victim of a women which is both a stereotype in society and in film. We thought we could use this representation of males and females in our film as it allowed for the audience to more easily identify who the aggressor and who the victim was in the short amount of time provided in our opening sequence as they would be either sub-consciously or consciously aware of the stereotype.

I have compared our female character in our opening sequence with another female character in the thriller “Fear” as both characters are victims of the anger of their boyfriend and are represented as defenceless in their respected films, as well as this they both seem to be well groomed.

Stern Expression

Well groomed hair

Angry and tensed up facial expression

Worried or saddened expression

I have compared our male character in our opening sequence with the male character from fear as they are both jealous and possessive characters, and are stereotyping males as aggressors from their actions in their respective films. Key: Red =

Difference Black = Similarity

Angry facial expression

Similar casual clothing

Intimidating stare

More concerned and saddened

AGE AND CLOTHINGOur characters are represented to be young adults from their physical appearance and the setting, which is office related, This age is stereotyped to be immature and overly emotional as well as having a strong link with social media, all stereotypes we have enforced as the male character seems to exaggerate what may seem to be a much smaller problem to an age group which is more mature. The female character is also talking to her friends on her phone which sparks the argument off. Both characters have features present of a 16-20+ year old age group as we had decided that through the use of a phone we could make the characters better relatable to the audience. The male character also seems to stereotype his age as he spends a lot of his time in the office, which is a stereotype of this age group being hard workers.

The two characters are dressed in clothing stereotypical of either a younger audience of teenagers or younger adults as they are not in business, the female characters clothing seems to present her as more laid back as well as that of someone who is stereotypically not working whereas the male character is wearing slightly less casual wear represents him as stern and working class. This is stereotypical of an older age group than that of the female character perhaps to show the difference in priorities or values of the two characters.
