Conventions of genres and

forms The pop-punk genre takes from both pop music and punk music, amalgamating them to form a

sub-genre. Typically, music videos of the pop-punk genre feature live footage, usually amateur clips of the band (self recorded, bad quality, almost a home footage effect) and a fast paced, busy atmosphere.

There is almost always a narrative and the narrative is linked to the music in terms of the pace and the intensity.

Close ups of the singer and band are a regular occurrence.

For music videos in general, conventions could include things like lip syncing and shots of the band.

The camerawork is generally fast paced in music videos to go along with the music.

The singer is usually the central aspect and made into a kind of icon.

Certain lenses and effects can affect how the video looks and I think variations are quite conventional of the genre.

I think that the pop-punk genre is generally associated with amateur camerawork and an almost home movie feel.

Who your target audience

are From my audience research, I have found out that

my audience consists of mostly 18-21 year olds with

a 50/50 split on genders.

Listeners of pop-punk would usually be lower-

middle class with a negative attitude towards

authority.

Their hobbies would usually include skating and/or

bmxing, usually playing an instrument.

There is a chance that they will also be in a band.

How to appeal to the target

audience On the survey that I released, I asked some questions relating to what they prefer and don’t prefer from a music video of that

genre.

My survey says that most prefer a narrative in the video to solely shots of the band with 66% saying that a narrative is essential.

In relation to what listeners prefer to see in the music video, substance abuse is most prominent, followed by shots of the bandplaying, girls, dancing and trashing things, and skating.

It was also suggested that a political statement, such as burning a flag and shots of the crowd surrounding the band should be in a music video.

I asked what comes to mind when you think of the pop-punk genre and a lot of responses suggested parties. Also there was mohawks and trashing things.

In my music video, there will be a narrative. The music video will entail things such as a party or a rave with pop-punk connotations such as substance abuse and girls. There will be shots of the band playing and the band skating.

I will try to send a message with my video, possibly political.

I may try to make my video seem American also to conform with stereotypical pop-punk videos and where the genre comes from.

The people I will feature in the video will be punk based with punk style hair.
