Media Production – Critical Evaluation:

We set out to create a film trailer aimed at teenagers. I was meant to be humorous and also have a

scary side.

We started by going creating a survey and we survey around our school as they would be out target

audience. We looked at other programmes which our programme may also be categorised in so we

had an idea of how we wanted our programmed to turn out. Also, we created a story board so we

can have an idea of how our movie would actually turn out. However, with the actual filming process

we realised some of the things in our story board were very difficult to film but we managed to find

a way to progress through our difficulties.

In our filming we used many conventions of horror:

Low angle:

Camera angles/movement: We used low shots from the floor to add more drama as it didn’t

show the characters face.

We point of view shots to show the actual ‘monster or bad person’ chasing the girlsthis gave the viewers of the ‘monsters’ point of view or an out sider looking in.

We also used extreme close up as the students

running down the stairs. This could show the

urgency,.

, tilt, pan, arc, push in pull out, close up.

Lighting:The lighting was not really in our control as we were in a school building.

However, this may also be effective because it could show that not all bad things happen in

dark or dim light. It could happen to anyone.

Sound:We use very intense music to build up the tension with lyrics like ‘Is this the end of

the world’. We also included actual screams from some of the actresses in out Trailer.

Editing:We used a lot of fading to build up the fear and hopefully bring you to the edge of

your seat.

Narrative:

Page 2: Media production

We told the story mostly through the characters emotions but we tried not to give too much

away! Throughout the Trailer we have the words ‘Will they get out in time?’ This is like a

Rhetorical question which may leave the viewer wondering what will happen next.

Conforming to the genre horror:

Screams from the actors/actresses

Dim lighting

Fading for added tension

Mysterious – we didn’t give anything away

Point of view running (view of the monster…)

People getting hurt

Lots going on at once

Subverting to the genre horror:

Humour – When Laura runs

Teachers acting dramatic this may humorous to the students

The fact it was filmed in a school

There was no blood

The students in the movie are represented as very innocent and cannot really fend for

themselves. The teachers are more or less in control. The school which is where are trailer

was set is seemed as a bad place as the students are trying to ‘get out’. Groups are represented

as very caring about each other for example in the running scene when Alice runs back for

Kai.

Intended audience:

Our intended audience were young teens who watch shows like:

Skins

Inbetweeners

Misfits

The Midnight beast

Two broke girls

They want to be scared and also be on the edge of their seat. However, teens also like

humour.

Feedback:

We got some feedback on our YouTube and also on our Facebook:

Organisational Factors:

We would like Film to be on TV on a channel like E4 as lots of teenagers what e4 these days. The film

will probably be 90 minutes and there will be three parts. Those can then be sold as box sets and

distributes in shops E.G. HMV as lots of young people shop there. For our film to conform to

established rules and regulations we will probably have a set age e.g. 13 and over also maybe a

parental guidance as is a horror and may disturb some people.
