Community helps tosave one of their own
By NICK COHENThe Medford Sun
Jim Johnson continues toserve his community as a Mt.Laurel firefighter. Now he is hop-ing the community can help himin the fight to save his wifes life.
Becky Johnson was diagnosedwith a rare disease of the pan-creas in 2004 and has reached thepoint now that an experimentalsurgery may be the only thing leftto improve the quality and ulti-
mately save her life. For the John-son family, this has been a dreamfor more than 10 years.
In July 2002, after experiencingconsistent pain in her torso,Becky had her gallbladder re-moved.
Its not unusual for people tohave gallbladder issues so we did-nt think it would be any issueafter it was removed, Jim said. But when she experienced thesame sharp pain not too longafter her surgery, thats when weknew something else had to bewrong.
Months of tests and hospitalvisits followed but no answers
were given to the Johnsons. Withmore and more time, the condi-tion worsened. Becky was hospi-talized the day before her andJims wedding, but true to her na-ture, she walked down the aisle.
She said I am not missing ourwedding, Jim said Shes afighter, just so strong, so the nextday she signed herself out of thehospital and was at our wedding.
More doctor visits and testingbut still no answers. At that point,
her surgeon suggested an unlike-ly source a rare disease calledPancreas Divisum with Sphincterof Oddi Dysfunction.
The surprise was her age. Imean she was 23-24 years oldwhen she was diagnosed, Jimsaid. The disease only affectssomething like 1 percent of thepopulation and they are mostlymuch, much older.
The disease cuts off the pan-creatic ducts that release en-zymes into the digestive system, which causes severe pain andchronic pancreatitis. The diseaseis hereditary and many people

If the only exposure you had to
New Jersey was what others said
or wrote about it, youd think it
was the worst place on the planet.
Scan the Internet just this week, and
youd find these stories:
Our governor called the authors of
a League of Municipalities report ontax reform corrupt and labeled the
groups leader as a whiner.
A Little League coach in Newark
plead guilty in court to assaulting an
umpire because he wouldnt call a
game due to darkness.
A new report says that the Garden
State is the most expensive state to get
your car repaired. A great white shark circled a boat
off the coast (not that this has much to
do with Jersey).
The greater public perception of
New Jersey is that it is a crowded, ex-
pensive state full of loud, obnoxious
people (thanks Real Housewives and
Jersey Shore) who think they are
better than everyone else (well, arent
we?). Our governor fits that mold per-
fectly, even as he is being mentioned as
a potential candidate for president of
the United States when the next elec-tion comes around.
Heck, of the three professional
sports teams that are located in the
state, only one (the Devils) are
proud enough to label themselves
from New Jersey. The other two (the
Giants and Jets) act like theyre from
New York.
So why does anyone still live here?
Why are we doing this to ourselves?
Because, for those of us who livehere, who grew up here and are rais-
ing families here, we know the good-
ness that is here in New Jersey, even if
we recognize the bad. We love our
beaches, our mountains and our easy
access to major cities. We are proud of
our small, quaint towns, our history
and our top-notch schools, even if we
pay exorbitant prices to be here.We are New Jersey, and well always
be New Jersey.
And we dont care what you think.
What are we still doing here? With all the negativity about the state, why does anyone live in N.J.?
Your thoughts
Are you proud to be a New Jerseyan?Let us know why you choose to call theGarden State your home...and also whatyoud like to see improve.
Celebrates Foundation stagingtownships July 4 celebration
For the second year in a row, the all-vol-unteer, non-profit Medford CelebratesFoundation is staging Medford TownshipsIndependence Day Celebration and Fire-works Display on June 29.
An important change this year is thedate, time and length of the event: Satur-day, June 29, with a 2 p.m. start time.
In previous years, the fireworks wereheld in the evening on July 3.
We made this change in order to providea bigger, all-day, family-oriented event fea-turing childrens entertainment (startingat 2 p.m.), a Kids Activity Zone, a ceremo-
ny honoring our military veterans (6 p.m.),an expanded food court, extended beer gar-den hours and many other additional at-tractions.
Medford Celebrates is able to stage thisevent due only to the generosity of our
sponsors (see medfordcelebrates.org/fire-works/sponsors), private donors, and thehelp and support we receive from our com-munity and South Jersey residents.
Medford Celebrates operates specifical-ly to raise funds to support the Medfordevents that require municipal services.
These events bring crowds and positiveattention to Medford, as well as revenuesto the businesses that serve those whovisit.
Equally important, attending an eventlike the fireworks becomes part of manyfamilies annual traditions.
Medford Celebrates was founded in 2011after the municipal funding for traditionalMedford community events became un-available, which resulted in the fireworks
not being held in 2010 or 2011.Last year, we successfully reinstated the
fireworks, and this year the fireworks willgo on as planned.
We understand that some Medford resi-dents believe that tax revenues are used to
pay the expenses associated with hostingthe fireworks.
We want to clarify that the fireworks arenot funded by tax dollars.
Medford Celebrates raises all of its rev-enues from tax-deductible contributions, sponsors and fundraisers.
We then make a grant to Medford Town-ship that covers all the expenses that thetownship incurs for the event.
We understand residents feel differentlyabout funding the fireworks and othercommunity events some feel tax dollarsshould cover the expenses, some feel other-wise.
The reality is, across the nation, eventslike ours are not being funded by tax rev-enues.
For example, the fireworks atMcGuire/Dix/Lakehurst have been can-celled this year due to funding shortfalls.
As a result, these types of events can

continue only through the hardwork and donations of the publicand generous sponsors.
Hosting an event of this sizefor tens of thousands of Medfordand South Jersey residents takesa team of people and, frankly, ourteam can use a few more players!
The tasks that must be com-pleted before and on June 29 aretoo many to be carried out by theMedford Celebrates Trusteesalone.
We are asking our friends andneighbors and our neighboringtowns residents to help with avariety of light tasks on June 29.
In exchange, volunteers willsecure a fantastic fireworks view-ing spot, good parking, a t-shirtand a food and drink voucher.
Those who may be interestedcan find out more about us andvolunteering by visitingwww.medfordcelebrates.org,emailing [email protected] or calling Dottie
Spellman at (609) 654-0563.You may also contact me at
[email protected], orfind us on Facebook at www.face-
book.com/medfordnjcelebrates.We want the fireworks and
other renowned Medford eventsto continue, so we keep working but we need help.
If you can assist us, please vol-unteer your time, make a dona-tion and support our sponsors.
Please dont assume this eventor others will always just hap-pen without volunteers, spon-sors or public support. They sim-ply will not.

We have been diligently work-ing since the 2012 fireworks tocreate a bigger and even better
event, said Beth Portocalis, Med-ford Townships liaison, in a foun-dation statement. The more wetalked about it, the more it justmade sense to move the date ofthe fireworks to the precedingSaturday so it could be an all-daycelebration involving the entireMedford community as well asthose who come to Medford forthe celebration. Literally thou-
sands of people come to Medfordto see the fireworks, and now theycan make a day of it.
The most expensive purchaseis the fireworks, costing approxi-mately $15,000, according to Egan.
Ultimately, were going to relyon donations from the public,Egan said. Were very apprecia-tive of those who have [made a do-nation].
Guests can expect musical en-tertainment provided by a DJ andCherry Hills No Commitment. The bands lead singer, ZacharyBirnbaum, successfully made itto Hollywood on season 12 ofAmerican Idol.

have a strain of it; however it re-mains dormant. Doctors havefound that removing the gallblad-der may trigger the disease.
Local doctors originally gaveBecky five to seven years to liveand that it wouldnt be a goodquality of life, Jim said. Im a
stubborn guy and that was not anacceptable answer. After researching and digging,
they were referred to a doctor atJohns Hopkins University whowas having success in placingstents in the pancreatic ducts. Atthe time, those stents were ex-tremely short term and couldonly be in the ducts for 72 hours. The intent is for the body to beginforming scar tissue and make theducts remain open.
The same doctor eventually
moved to another Baltimore hos-pital and became a leading sur-geon in its digestive health andliver disease department. He toldthe Johnsons about a stent thatcould stay in the body for up tofour months, allowing the ductsto remain open with assistance.
This was a great solution atthe time, Jim said. This wayBecky could be home for 10-12weeks, be with our sons, at leastget the chance to be a regularmom.
That was in 2004. Now, Beckyhas been through more than 50procedures.
Just from the emotionalstandpoint, it is incredibly diffi-cult. Every three months or so, wehave to tell our kids that mommyis going away for a week, maybetwo, but shell be back, Jim said. Its a strain on her, and its astrain on our kids.
Cael, 9, and Kase, 3, have grownup only knowing this way of life.
The unusual has been forcedto become a routine for them. Itsan emotional struggle for themthat I cant even imagine, Jimsaid. Theyre amazing in dealingwith it. They know when she has
to rest and when she has to leavebut of course they miss theirmother.
Jim was quick to say thiswould be impossible without thehelp of both his and Beckys par-ents, and that, when Becky ishome, she is as helpful as shephysically can be.
She has good days and baddays, Jim said. Shes not able towork but shell get the kids readyfor school and ready for bed, a
very typical mom relationship. The routine of Becky leavingevery few months for proceduresmay be ending. Now she hasreached a point where the stentsare not working as well and, withthat, surgeries are required moreoften.
We said after her last proce-dure in March that somethingelse has to be done, Jim said.
Jim researched as much as hecould online and found a fairlynew procedure. Beckys pancreas
as well as her spleen would be re-moved. Doctors would then har-vest the auto islet cells from herpancreas and re-inject them intoher liver. The hope is that, withcontinued medication, this wouldstop Beckys pain and prevent herfrom becoming diabetic.
In doing his research, Jimfound that The University of Min-nesota in Minneapolis has suc-cessfully completed more than400 of these procedures and theirsuccess rate and post-op care aresecond to none. All good news, but the bad news is the operationitself can cost $300,000, and Jimshealth insurance provider has re-fused to pay because it is an out-of-network hospital.
Jim is working with a special-ist to appeal the decision but he isalso ready to raise the money ifhe has to. The Johnsons have re-ceived slightly used home goodsfrom people to sell at auction oryard sales. Including items sold
and other cash donations, theyhave already raised $12,000.
I cannot say enough about ourcommunity, Jim said of theirhometown in Medford Lakes. Be-tween the Mt. Laurel Fire Depart-
ment and people at home, the re-sponse has been absolutelytremendous.
The plan is to host a variety ofevents in the future. The first wasa special night at PJ Whelihans inMedford Lakes on June 12. Sup-port wristbands are also beingsold for $5.
If this is what it takes to givemy wife a better life, Im ready todo it, Jim said. Whatever ittakes.
