6 key planning principles responding to Educational Philosophy and Masterplan:

1. MCH and ELC underpins family, social and educational philosophy

2. Entrance from both street frontages for stronger community connection

3. Understand disadvantage and poverty : “hand up not hand out”

4. Creating age appropriate indoor/outdoor learning spaces for formal and informal learning

5. Architectural expression for school as an iconic place

6. ESD

FURNITURE AND SPACE DESIGN

Your new school ‘packs up’ traditional settings...

Lack of colour benches and covered windows

constrained layouts chalk and talk

...and looks at new settings to compliment modern learning

better use of the floor theatrettes and performance

technology settings colour and fun

Furniture can make spaces flexible...

- s p a c e for imagination- lightweight - multi-functional- robust

- non-prescriptive

Flexible Learning Spaces...adaptive furniture

Flexible Learning Spaces...adaptive furniture

Flexible Learning Spaces...adaptive furniture

What if...only 50% of bottoms had a chair?

Could half the class be busy elsewhere?

Informal settings...the floor

Informal settings...soft furnishings

Curvatus - modular shape creates relaxed groupings for individual or group break out space. Lengths break up larger spaces and focus teacher presentation or discussion

Podz - Can be used as an intensive grouping or broken up for teachers to bring up to child’s workspace. Easily moved about the room.

Informal settings...beanbags

Informal settings...small groups

inspires teachers and students to consider configurations rather than assuming conventional linear layout

Byte - adaptable to different groupings and activities

Adaptive furniture...mobile / tiered lockers

Adaptive furniture...mobile stages

Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD)

Meadows Primary School is undergoing certification targeting 6 STAR Greenstar rating

The building includes:

• 717,000 L rainwater storage

• 10.9kW Photovoltaic system (66 panels)

• 3.6kW Wind turbine

• Long span timber structure from renewable resources

• Controlled natural daylighting

• Innovative Hydrothermal Airconditioning passive ventilation system

Would be the first primary school in Australia to obtain 6-star Greenstar

Environmentally sustainable construction materials:

• Efficient Timber structure

• High thermal mass in concrete slab and limestone walls

• Metal cladding is low-maintenance, lightweight and heat reflective

• High levels of insulation

• Low-e glazing

• Recycled PET backing to carpet tiles

• Rubber sheet flooring

• Recycled floor boards as cladding

Would be the first primary school in Australia to obtain 6-star Greenstar

Integrated Sustainability / Passive Cooling• Deep eaves and an insulated roof

• Thermal mass stabilises internal temperatures.

• Roof shape and operable windows

• Skylights introduce daylight into the learning centres

• Night purging
