Update on the Prime Timers’ Trip to

Foster’s Home for Children

When the Prime Timers delivered the paper goods to Foster’s

Home for Children on Saturday, September 13th

they saw first-

hand what a great job the Home is doing with their 50 plus kids.

On September 12th

Foster’s Home received 5 more children and

are working on State approval to care for up to 72 children. On

the morning of September 13th

they broke ground for another

cottage.

They were also appreciative of the two big boxes of “Green

Cans” that we took along with the paper goods. New empty cans

have been placed in the foyer on the information desk. Please

take one and begin saving your pocket change so we can take

another load next year. We thank everyone for your generosity

for these children.

" The Bible in Schools "

Our nation was founded on Christian principles. One can find

echoes of Scripture in our founding documents. It really is the

righteous influence of the Bible that has made our nation great.

On Tuesday of this past week, Jacob Rhymes, a freshman in

high school and a member of the Carriage Oaks Church of

Christ in Bossier City, Louisiana, posted the following on

Facebook.

"Hey friends! Today I was reading my bible in class and my

teacher came up to me and said, 'Jacob I totally respect you for

reading your Bible and have no problem with it, but the school

would not appreciate you having that out! Please put it up.' So I

put it up and was thinking to myself, 'Why do they allow the

curriculum in our school that involves evolution and all of that?

To some people that is like a religion! I don't understand if they

can teach that, why can't they teach Christianity?' That's just

something I thought was interesting that happened today! Is like

your thoughts on this! Maybe we could start a change for the

better!"

Amendment 1 to the Constitution says, "Congress shall make no

law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the

free exercise thereof." Many make reference to the "wall of

separation between church and state." However, that language

isn't in the Constitution. It appears in an 1801 letter that

President Jefferson wrote in response to a letter that he received

from the Danbury Baptist Association in Connecticut. The

Baptists feared that their religious freedom might be

compromised by the Congregationalist church. Jefferson's point

was that this wall of separation was to protect the church from

the state and not vice versa.

Jefferson wrote to the Virginia Baptists in 1808, "We have

solved, by fair experiment, the great and interesting question

whether freedom of religion is compatible with order in

government and obedience to the laws. And we have

experienced the quiet as well as the comfort which results from

leaving every- one to profess freely and openly those principles

of religion which are the inductions of his own reason and the

serious convictions of his own inquiries."

One has to wonder how free students are openly to express their

religious convictions at school if they aren't allowed even to

read from their Bible during free time in class? The First

Amendment is intended to provide the freedom of religion and

not freedom from religion. May we all follow Paul's command

and pray for our country (1 Tim. 2:1-2).
