“I Believe In God”
"I believe in God and I try to be nice to my family and a good citizen. I think that is enough." If I had a nickel for every time that I've been given that line when discussing eternal realities with someone I would definitely have more than a dollar. Many people think that a generic belief in God is sufficient to place them within his grace. Jesus disagrees.
John 5 records a miracle that Jesus performed on a paralyzed man. The Jewish leaders zealously persecuted him on the basis of two charges--first, he broke the Sabbath law in his miracle; and, second, he blasphemed by inferring that he was God's Son. To their way of thinking, "calling God his own Father" was "making himself equal with God" (v. 18 NIV).
Jesus' reply to them would be unabashed blasphemy were it not true. "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees the Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed...Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him" (vv. 19-20, 22-23 NIV).
Jesus didn't back up one iota from the Jews' charge that his words amounted to his claiming for himself equality with God. He owned that charge fully. Note a few things from Jesus' defense.
First, he alluded to the Jewish custom of fathers teaching their trade to their sons in verse 19. But he then built on that thought with these incredible words: "For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does." All Jews admitted the mystery of God's working (Eccl. 3:11; 11:5; et al.). No Jew dared to know all of God's secrets (cf. Deut. 29:29). However, Jesus, who had come from the Father's side in heaven, had seen what no other eye had (John 1:18). Thus Jesus claimed a unique relationship with God that was superior than was that of Abraham or Moses.
Second, the Old Testament repeatedly affirmed that God would judge the world (Gen. 18:25; Eccl. 12:14; et al.). However, Jesus claimed to be the one who would actually do the judging. Thus Jesus claimed for himself Godhood.
Third, Jesus said that the Father demanded that all humans give the same honor to Jesus that is due to himself. And actually, failure to give that honor to Jesus is tantamount to dishonoring the Father. Thus Jesus claimed equality with God.
The conclusion that one must draw from Jesus' words is that a generic belief in God isn't enough. One must come to God by honoring his Son, Jesus.
