Key AchievementsIn May 2012 the SKA Organisation announced the “dual site solution” which meant that Australia had secured the hosting of the innovative low frequency telescope array, with Phase 1 to be built in the Mid West region of Western Australia.
September 2011 saw the launch of theSkyNet.org, a citizen’s science computing collaboration between the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), Curtin University, eMedia Track and the Department of Commerce.
In the lead up to the launch I liaised with representatives from other parties involved in plans for the launch on how best to draw media attention to the launch, which included the arrangements to have the Minister for Science and Innovation make the official launch speech.
I also coordinated the Minister for Science and Innovation’s briefing material, such as fine tuning his speech for tone and message, and facilitating his ease of movement throughout the event by briefing senior officers from the Department of Commerce who attended the launch and the Curtin University Protocol Officer.
In addition to the tasks above, I was given the opportunity to utilise my design skills to produce a simple animated data visualisation for the launch event.

A/Product Safety Officer Department of Commerce Feb 2010 - Jun 2010 Jun 2009 - Sep 2009Was responsible for conducting inspections in retail premises on items restricted by current Product Safety Regulations and Orders. Researched safety issues, such as existing standards, recorded injuries and current complaints, on new and existing products to provide information to the Commissioner for Consumer Protection and the Consumer Product Safety Council. Responded to general product safety enquiries from consumers related to a broad range of products. Liaised with other State and the Commonwealth product safety authorities regarding opinions on products identified as potentially hazardous to ensure a consistent, nation-wide standard for safety (Harmonisation); prepared educational material on restricted or potentially unsafe products for traders.
Key AchievementsI conducted inspections and surveys on fitness equipment retailers after an order was made by the Commissioner for Consumer Protection requiring a specifically worded warning label. The survey indicated that only 20% of treadmills were compliant with the new Regulation and I drafted an educational letter reminding retailers of the new requirements which was sent to all stores likely to be selling treadmills to consumers.
Conciliation Officer (Retail) Department of Commerce Sep 2009 - Feb 2010 Nov 2006 - Jun 2009 Jul 2001 - Apr 2002Mediated disputes between consumers and traders. Provided advice on consumer and trader rights and responsibilities. Identified potential breaches of legislations for further investigation. Prepared ministerial responses and briefing notes. Identified trends in trader behaviour for education purposes.
Key AchievementsIn 2008, I established a list of co-operative contacts for traders the Department had received complaints against. This list was adopted by the entire Conciliation team and was and is still used to maintain consistent communication with any given company to help the Branch establish rapport with the traders, as well as speed up the process of resolving minor disputes.
Project Officer Department of Commerce Feb 2005 - Nov 2006Fitness Industry ReviewExamined WA State legislation [Fair Trading (Fitness Industry Code of Practice) Regulations 2004] to determine what facets of the industry could and should be reviewed. Created a survey of required information and produced a schedule for collecting and analysing data; collected necessary data through face-to-face visits to fitness centres and as well as a voluntary call for submissions to a written enquiry. The collected data was analysed for trends in relation to industry membership agreements. Reported findings to key stakeholders (including Manager, Retail and Service Industries, Director, Industry and Consumer Services, Commissioner of Fair Trading, and Fitness WA). Prepared ministerial briefing notes and assisted with preparation of a media statement regarding review findings.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Project Officer Department of Commerce [Continued]Key AchievementsAn important element of my final report to the Acting Manager, Retail and Service Industries was that the Department continue to monitor the fitness industry in a proactive rather than reactive manner. Currently a Proactive Compliance Officer of the Retail and Service Industries branch examines fitness centre agreements for new and existing centres.
Pricing Scanner AuditVisited a variety of stores, including pharmacies, service stations and variety stores, to compare the labelled shelf price of products to the price read by electronic scanners at point of sale. Collated and analysed data collected for the number and frequency of discrepancies in prices both for the Perth metropolitan area overall and broken down into the different types of premises inspected. Reported findings to a national body (FTOAC) for inclusion in the Australia-wide survey.
WAScamNet Officer Department of Commerce Apr 2002 - Feb 2005Wrote public awareness articles for the Department’s website. Shared a monthly, live radio segment on multicultural station announcing new scams targeting Western Australia. Liaised with consumers regarding scam enquiries and with various levels of management prior to naming new scams to the public. Collected, sorted, and reviewed example scams sent to Department by the public.
Key AchievementsDuring my time as WA ScamNet Officer, this highly effective public awareness scheme was nominated for a Premier’s Award for Service to the Community. While we did not win the award, WA ScamNet received a High Commendation for its cost effective contribution to protecting Western Australian consumers.
