IN many respects, the accessories market has evolved almost as much as the consoles over the last ten years. From memory cards to motion sensing cameras past wireless controllers, keeping up with the extra peripherals sparking consumers’ interest requires constant attention.

“Five years ago, the Wii MotionPlus was the biggest selling gaming accessory,” recalls Chris Poole, senior account manager at market research firm GfK Chart-Track. “In fact, the Top Five best-selling gaming accessories that year were all Wii accessories – MotionPlus, the Wii Fit Balance Board, Wii Remote, Wheel and Nunchuk. From 2006 to date, these five accessories are the top selling ‘traditional’ (excluding toys-to-life and digital content) console gaming accessories and account for 17.1 per cent of all units (19 per cent of all revenue).”

“Kinect and Move in 2010 created a big shift in the gaming accessories market,” he continues. “The original Kinect sensor’s price meant it was close to that of an individual console, so it is not too surprising it is currently the biggest-grossing gaming accessory we have on record.

“Following that, 2011 saw sales of gaming headsets take off. More recently, the majority of revenue comes from digital content and non-traditional gaming

products such as Skylanders and Disney Infinity’s ‘toys-to-life’.”

Neal McCann, marketing assistant at SCEE, adds that the latest generation of consoles has provided retailers a fantastic opportunity to entice consumers with new technologies and features.

“The birth of PS4 has shown gamers that the accessories market as a whole plays an important role in the next-gen experience,” he says. “The integration of the Share button, touch pad and light bar show how accessories have become next-gen, just like the consoles.”

Meanwhile, Alan Jones, GM of accessories specialist Gioteck, tells MCV that while demand for console accessories ebbs as the hardware ages, PC extras continue to maintain their value.

“The markets for PC and console accessories tend to behave in different ways,” he comments. “The console market

THE STATE OF ACCESSORIESLast year’s launch of the PS4 and Xbox One has provided retailers the ideal chance to stock the latest peripherals and accessories.

Matthew Jarvis looks at how the market has changed over the last five years – and where it could go next

The PC accessories market is probably worth £40 million per annum in the UK alone.

was driven by the huge demand for motion-based Wii accessories and the strength of the install base of PS3 and Xbox 360. However, the console market is very cyclical and whilst growth was spectacular, the decline was also difficult to manage for retailers and manufacturers. Typically the accessories category will decline at 25 to 40 per cent per annum as new formats begin to emerge.

“The PC market, with a smaller serious gaming community, tends to be less fashion-orientated. Whilst hardware penetration has stalled in recent years as the mass market has adopted the tablet format, the PC accessories market is still sizeable and probably worth £40 million per annum in the UK alone.”

HEADSET FOR SUCCESSThe integration of streaming services and focus on online multiplayer in the PS4 and Xbox One has continued to drive one of the biggest accessory segments – headsets.

“The growth in online gaming over the last five years has had an impact on how gamers like to play and a key aspect has been having the ability to communicate with their friends quickly and effectively,” comments McCann.

According to the latest figures from GfK, premium console gaming headsets for the Xbox One have particularly helped to boost the gaming headset sector to its highest year-to-date share of ‘traditional’ console gaming accessories, now accounting for over a quarter (27.8 per cent) of the market.

Colour controllers are often a popular purchase

This has been further bolstered by major multiplayer title launches.

“Titanfall, as a huge-selling online-only multiplayer title, has no doubt fed players the need for a high-end headset for their new Xbox One,” suggests Poole. “It looks like Xbox Live users, rather than PSN gamers, are more inclined to use a headset.”

Jones agrees, highlighting that budget headset models are seeing particular success.

“The explosion of online multiplayer gaming has driven large sales of chat and stereo headsets, as gamers need to communicate with each other as well as enjoying a more immersive gaming experience,” he states. “The majority of sales are in the sub-£50 price point.”

OUT OF CONTROLLERWhile headsets have seen growth, not every sector is faring as well. The trusty second controller is now becoming obsolete, as online gaming voids the need for additional devices.

This effect can be seen in the falling sales of first-party controllers when compared to the previous generation. GfK reports that for the first 41 weeks from launch of the Xbox 360 versus the Xbox One, the One sold 34.8 per cent fewer controller units. Controller revenue fell by just 4.2 per cent; this is because the average selling price of the Xbox 360 controller was £29.68, while the Xbox One controller costs £43.63.

Similarly, for the first 40 weeks of the PS3 versus the same period on PS4, controller unit sales are down by by 20.6 per cent while controller revenue grew by 26.5 per cent. Again, this is because the PS3 controller cost £30.15 on average, while the PS4 controller was £49.47.

Poole comments: “This time round more ‘online-integrated’ consoles have led to a drop in the controller attach rate. However, the cost of the controller itself is much higher.

“The feeling is that gamers are playing less local co-op multiplayer and more online, so aren’t buying as many extra controllers as before.”

While McCann agrees that additional controllers are seeing demand fall, he argues that new technologies and controller types are inspiring consumers to invest in up-to-date accessories.

“Demand has moved away from just simply requiring an additional controller – players are looking to augment their gaming experiences,” he states.

“The accessories market continues to evolve, adding value to the gaming experience. We’ve seen peaks with motion controllers and instrument accessories to complement the latest games and trends. Most recently we’re seeing consumers embrace new technologies like sharing direct to their social networks.”

However, Jones believes that controllers remain a necessity for younger players.

“The need for a second controller is critical to most players,” he says. “Sales of the official PS4 and Xbox One controllers have been strong since launch and old-gen pads are still selling extremely well. For PS3 and Xbox 360, the focus is on value and products that cater to the younger demographic, such as illuminated, colour or smaller-sized pads.”

THE NEXT GENERATIONClearly there’s an accessory revolution in the works, as the new console generation

increases the focus on communication devices and groundbreaking tech. So what’s next for the sector?

“Beyond the continued importance of audio and controller products, we see opportunities in wired and wireless charging, storage devices for downloaded

content and new ways of interfacing with multimedia consoles other than a traditional joypad,” says Jones.

He adds that, while certain categories may be forced to evolve to survive, the future is bright for accessories.

“The transition from old-gen to new consoles is always a challenging one,” he explains. “Whilst the PS4 and Xbox One are penetrating the market very quickly, their installed bases are still relatively low when compared to the last generation. Interest in old-gen is diminishing but for the right product at the right price, sales are still strong.

“We expect the overall console accessories market to grow this year by five to 10 per cent, but growth in 2015 and 2016 will be far stronger.”
