Open Response Guide
Objective 1: Teachers will provide a standardized format to students for open response writing.
Objective 2: Teachers will administer open response questions once a week on the same day to “skill up” the Dean Tech student body.
Goal: Using the rubric, 100% of Dean Tech students will increase their scores by 1 or more points.
Open Response Grading Rubric
Response answers ALL parts of the prompt thoroughly and correctly. Response includes a complete topic sentence. Student uses 3 or more references to the text and thoroughly explains how each quote relates to the topic sentence. Response includes closing remarks that restate the main idea and offers a reflection.
Response answers most parts of the prompt correctly. Response includes a complete topic sentence. Student uses less than 3 quotes to support the topic sentence. Student response includes a general explanation of how quotes connect to the topic sentence. Reponse includes a closing remark.
Response answers some parts of the prompt correctly. Topic sentence is incomplete. Student uses 2 or less references to the text to support ideas. Response includes a limited explanation of how quotes connect to the topic sentence. Limited or no closing remark.
Response answers few parts of the prompt correctly. Topic sentence is incomplete or missing. Student does not use evidence from the text to support ideas or uses evidence incorrectly. Response includes minimal analysis of topic.
Response is completely incorrect, irrelevent to the question, or missing. 0

The second piece of textual evidence that includes 3 sentences: introduce the quote, give the quote, explain the quote
The third piece of textual evidence that includes 3 sentences: introduce the quote, give the quote, explain the quote
Final remarks restate the main idea in the topic sentence and offer a reflection.

PLEASE NOTE: This is data driven instruction: Studies show students who scored below a 3 on MCAS open response frequently used quotes but left out “explaining” how these quotes tied to the topic sentence. “Explain the Quote” sentences are the #1
way to increase student scores because they show the student’s critical thinking.
