MBS Universal BACnet Routers connect networks with different BACnet network technology, such as BACnet/IP, BACnet Ethernet and BACnet MS/TP (BACnet - Building Automation and Control Networks). A typical area of application is the field of technical building service equipment. In the process, building control systems, DDC stations, field devices and room controllers, for instance, communicate via BACnet. BACnet objects can thus be transferred between different types of BACnet networks.

MBS UBR type overview

Type Ethernet ports MS/TP (RS485)

BACnet Network Security

UBR-01 | Mk II 1 x

UBR-02 2 x x

Both MBS Universal BACnet Routers make it possible to implement BACnet network topologies ISO 8802-2 (BACnet/Ethernet), BACnet/IP and MS/TP (RS485-based serial BACnet networks). They are compatible with the MS/TP slave proxy functions "Auto-Slave Discovery" and "Manual-Slave-Proxy". That way, slave devices can be detected using Who-Is/I Am telegrams on the network.

You use the integrated web interface to configure the routers, save the configuration and call up documentation.

The UBR-01 | Mk II is equipped with an Ethernet port and is used as the base device.

The UBR-02 has two Ethernet ports for connecting two separate IP ranges and two RS485 ports for the BACnet MS/TP bus. The UBR-02 also supports the tunnelling protocol of the BACnet NetworkSecurity layer.

Routing options

Connecting an MS/TP to a BACnet IP network

Routing encrypted packages between BACnet networks (UBR-02)

Establishing an encrypted communication link between two BACnet networks in conjunction with a second UBR-02

Page 8: MBS Universal BACnet Router User Guidedownload.mbs-solutions.de/handbuecher/en/MBS UBR-01... · The UBR-02 has two Ethernet ports for connecting two separate IP ranges and two RS485

Chapter 2 MBS Universal BACnet Router (UBR) 8

Connecting two IP networks (UBR-02)

Standalone BBMD (BACnet Broadcast Management Device)

The routers can function as BBMDs in BACnet networks. In the process the BBMD functionality is used to transport broadcast messages via network boundaries (IP switches) and to provide availability in the other subnetwork. Without the use of BBMDs broadcast messages are not be transmitted via an IP router. The connection of a foreign device (FD) is supported in BBMD mode.

Diagnosis

Comprehensive diagnostics options to make a start-up easier and to monitor the function in operation

FD – foreign device

Registration of the router as a foreign device when there is a BBMD in the network. As a result, the router becomes part of the BACnet/IP network and receives broadcast messages from other subnetworks.

BBMD IP filter

The BBMD-IP filter function makes it possible to control from which devices broadcasts are forwarded using the BBMD functionality from the IP subnet. Individual devices can be excluded using the filters to prevent broadcasts from these devices being transported over the boundaries of the IP subnet.

BACnet MS/TP

The routers operate as masters on the MS/TP bus. Compatible with the following speeds: 9600 baud, 19200 baud, 38400 baud, 57600 baud, 76800 baud, 115200 baud.

The bus terminating resistor and the network bias resistors are activated by the DIP switch. The RS485 interface (BACnetMS/TP) is potential-free.

Chapter 2 MBS Universal BACnet Router (UBR) 9

Slave proxy

Configuring the router as "slave proxy": Response on behalf of connected MS/TP slave devices to "who is" enquiries with an "I am" message.

The slave proxy option makes it possible for other BACnet devices to find the connected MS/TP slave devices on the network without the slave addresses in each device to be configured individually. The routers can be configured both manually and automatically.

"BACNET" area

BACnet > Settings

On this configuration page you set the following settings, for instance: Router mode, password for DCC/RD and network security (DDC/RD - device communication control/reinitialize device)

Router mode:The MBS UBR routers can communicate both via Ethernet (BACnet IP) and via a two-wire RS485 connection (BACnet MS/TP). Whereas the UBR-01 router has one Ethernet and one RS485 (MS/TP) interface, the UBR-02 has two of each of these interfaces.

The router mode drop-down list is used to set the router's operating mode:

• BACnet IP only: BACnet IP communication The data link for BACnet IP is preset.

• BACnet MS/TP only: BACnet MS/TP communication only A data link for BACnet MS/TP is preset.

• BACnet IP and MS/TP: BACnet IP + BACnet MS/TP communication Both a data link for BACnet IP and a data link for BACnet MS/TP are preset.

• "Non default operation": The user can freely configure the number and type of data links.

Page 28: MBS Universal BACnet Router User Guidedownload.mbs-solutions.de/handbuecher/en/MBS UBR-01... · The UBR-02 has two Ethernet ports for connecting two separate IP ranges and two RS485

Chapter 4 Start-up and operation 28

DCC/RD password:Sets the password for the BACnet services device communication control and reinitialize device. Please note that the password is case sensitive. The maximum length is 50 characters.

Network security (FOR UBR-02 ONLY):Activate the checkbox to prepare the router for secure communication. Two further checkboxes for BACnet network security settings are displayed. An additional submenu appears on the left for the respective data link for setting the security for the respective data link (network security policy).

Tunneling of unsecured PDUs:Activates or deactivates tunnelling

Disable non-trusted routing:If the checkbox is activated, telegrams from potentially unsafe sources are rejected and discarded.

Datalinks:The "Datalinks" table provides an overview of the configured data links with link types IP and MS/TP. If you select "Non default operation" mode from the drop-down router mode list, you can add further data link types to the table, e.g. Ethernet.

To adjust the respective data link, click on the editing button on the right.

A) Router mode = BACnet IP and/or MS/TP, link type = ip a) IP mode = normal

For the ip link type in the "Datalinks" table on configuration page BACnet > Settings, after clicking on the editing button the following dialogue opens and expands in accordance with the IP mode:

Page 29: MBS Universal BACnet Router User Guidedownload.mbs-solutions.de/handbuecher/en/MBS UBR-01... · The UBR-02 has two Ethernet ports for connecting two separate IP ranges and two RS485

Chapter 4 Start-up and operation 29

Network number:Defines the network number of the BACnet network for the datalink. The value is in a range from 1 to 65,534.

Note:

The network numbers of the configured datalinks must be unique!

Network security policy:Defines the security setting for the communication link. If two devices are to be used to create a tunnel, identical settings must be made on both for "network security policy". The network codes must always be fully entered irrespective of the selected network security policy.

Note:

The "Network security policy" drop-down list is only visible when the "Network Security" checkbox has been activated on the configuration page BACnet > Settings.

Page 30: MBS Universal BACnet Router User Guidedownload.mbs-solutions.de/handbuecher/en/MBS UBR-01... · The UBR-02 has two Ethernet ports for connecting two separate IP ranges and two RS485

Chapter 4 Start-up and operation 30

The security setting for a communication link specifies the minimum required security for a communication:

• Plain-Non-Trusted Unencrypted telegrams from a potentially unsafe source are accepted and routed – as long as the checkbox "Disable non trusted routing" is not checked.

• Plain-Trusted Unencrypted telegrams from a network physically secured against external access are accepted and routed.

• Signed-Trusted Signed telegrams are accepted. Non-signed or incorrectly signed telegrams are rejected without an error message.

• Encrypted-Trusted Only encrypted telegrams are accepted. All other telegrams are either discarded or acknowledged with a fault message as applicable. A prerequisite for this is the "do not hide" option.

LAN name :Defines the interface of the data link (LAN2 on UBR-02 only).

• LAN1

• LAN2

UDP port:Defines the UDP port of the BACnet/IP network as a decimal figure. The default value is 47808 ("0xBAC0" - hexadecimal).

Chapter 4 Start-up and operation 31

b) IP mode = BBMDThe router provides BBMD functionality for its own IP subnet and work and allows logins of external FD or BBMD devices.

Direct broadcasts to own ip network (one hop):

This option is used to enable the use of "OneHop" mode for BBMD. This mode is seldom used in networks and should only be set if the network planner explicitly provides for this.

Broadcast distribution table:The table lists all BBMDs which are queried in a broadcast in addition to the devices in the particular network in order to reach the devices from other networks. You use [Add] to generate a new list entry.

Page 32: MBS Universal BACnet Router User Guidedownload.mbs-solutions.de/handbuecher/en/MBS UBR-01... · The UBR-02 has two Ethernet ports for connecting two separate IP ranges and two RS485

Chapter 4 Start-up and operation 32

IP filter:The following three filter settings are available from the drop-down list:

• No active Filter – All devices are queried.

• White Filter – Only devices in the network with these IP addresses are queried.

• Black Filter – Devices other than those with these IP addresses are queried.

When selecting white or black filters you generate a list of IP addresses which serves as the basis for filtering. To do so, click on [Add], define the IP address in the BBMD filter dialogue and confirm with [OK].

c) IP Mode = Foreign deviceThe router is set as a foreign device subscriber to the BACnet network.

IP address BBMD server:The IP address under of the BBMD which is to be used by the UBR for logging in as a foreign device.

UDP port BBMD server:
