Bangladesh Institute of BankManagement (BIBM)

Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management(BIBM) is a unique educational, training andresearch institution supported and supervised bythe Bangladesh Bank (central bank), almost all thebanks and a few financial institutions ofBangladesh. Established as a national leveltraining institute for the banking sector in 1974under the Societies Act,1860, BIBM catersprimarily to the requirements of training of the midand senior-level officers of banks and financialinstitutions. Besides, it conducts workshops indifferent formats, seminars, roundtablediscussions, conferences and undertakesresearch on banking and allied fields regularly andprovides consultancy services to the banks andother organizations on request.

The Director General is the chief executive of theInstitute. There are four positions of directors tolook after Training; Administration & Accounts;Research, Development & Consultancy, andDhaka School of Bank Management (DSBM).

BIBM publishes two review series annuallynamely ‘Independent Review of Banking Sector’and ‘Independent Review of Non-BankingFinancial Sector’. BIBM also disseminates itsvarious research findings through its publicationsnamely, ‘Banking Research Series’, ‘BankingReview Series’ and ‘Research Monograph’.Moreover, BIBM publishes a quarterlyprofessional journal 'Bank Parikrama' on issuesrelated to Banking, Finance, Economics,Management and publishes a quarterly bulletintitled ‘BIBM Bulletin'. BIBM organizes an annualevent titled Annual Banking Conference with aview to enhance knowledge about the latestdevelopments in the financial sector throughexchange of views, opinions & research findings.

BIBM, in recent times, has stepped forward toexpand its global network through establishingrelationship with a number of reputedinternational academic/professional institutions.BIBM is now a member of European Banking andFinancial Services Training Association (EBTN)and Asia-Pacific Association of BankingInstitutions (APABI). BIBM has also signed aMemorandum of Understanding (MOU) withFrankfurt School of Finance and Management,Germany.

BIBM has started Masters in Bank Management(MBM) program in 1997 with the affiliation ofNational University. The MBM Program is aprofessional postgraduate program for bankofficers and others who plan career in banking andallied fields. For smooth running of the MBMprogram, Center for Post Graduate Studies(CPGS) was established. In 2006 BIBMintroduced MBM Evening program mainly for thebankers and other professionals.

Course Plan of the MBM Evening Program

MBM Evening program constitutes a total of 66 credit hours. A student shall have to complete twenty (20)courses (3 credit hours for each course). In addition to the required courses, every student must submit aDissertation (in the last term) weighing 3 credit hours and appear at viva-voce examinations at the end of I, III,IV and V terms, weighing in total 3 credit hours. However, minimum 48 credit hours will be required forcompleting the degree with a maximum waiver of 6 (six) courses. Duration of the MBM Evening program istwenty-eight months divided into seven terms. For each course, there will have 42 hours of class lectures.The distribution of total credit hours is as follows:

Evaluation System

Two mid-term examinations will be held for eachcourse. An Examination Committee will beformed for the purpose of term-final examination.The Committee will be proposed by DSBM andbe approved by the University of Dhaka. Answerscripts of the term final examinations will beevaluated by two examiners while the mid-termand other examinations will be evaluated by thecourse teacher(s).

Total marks for each course is 100. Thedistribution of the marks is as follows:

Viva-voce will be conducted by the ExaminationCommittee at the end of Terms I, III, IV and V.Mark for each viva-voce is 25 (twenty five). Thestudents will have to submit a dissertationweighing three credit hours. The mark forDissertation is 100 and distributed as follows:

Dissertation will be evaluated by the members ofthe Examination Committee and respectiveinternal guide teacher. Dissertation defense willalso be conducted by the ExaminationCommittee.

The grading system for evaluating courseperformance of MBM Evening students will be asfollows:

Term grade point average will be computed todetermine the academic standing of the studentin the program. Final CGPA will be determined onthe basis of the grade point earned in all requiredcredit courses of the program.

Maximum six courses from the list of fundamentalcourses may be waived for a student. However, forgetting waiver in any course, a student must have“A” grade or equivalent in that particular course inhis /her previous Graduate /BBA /MBA /Mastersprogram. The applicant must also pass a waivertest. A student may get waiver for maximum twocourses in a term.

A student must meet the following requirements toearn the MBM degree:

Completing all the required coursessuccessfully.Earning a minimum CGPA of 2.5 with no“F” grade in any course.Remaining free from any disciplinaryactions.Clearing all the dues of the program.

Retake, Improvement, Make-up andWithdrawal

A student failing to secure at least grade point 2.0in any course for any reason whatsoever mustretake the examination of that course inthe following year. However, a student can retakeat most 4 (four) courses during the entire .A student obtaining lower than “B” (plain) grade ina course may retake the term-final examinationfor improvement in the following year. The resultthus obtained will be substituted only if it is betterthan the previous one. Generally a student canretake an examination of a course only once.Extraordinary cases (for retake) may berecommended by the Institute to

Temporary withdrawal from the program may beallowed to a student with permission from theUniversity of Dhaka. Such withdrawal would bepermissible only once after completion of at leastthe first two terms. Students having minimumCGPA 2.50 will be allowed to apply for withdrawalfrom the program. Students, in any case, mustcomplete the program within a period of 5academic years from the date of initialregistration.

Adopting unfair means in all types ofexaminations and other academic activities isstrictly prohibited. The following, among others,would be considered as adoption of unfair means:

a. Communicating with fellow students in theexaminations;

b. Copying from another s tudent 'sscript/report/paper;

c. Allowing other students to copy;

d. Copying from printed matter, hand writtenmanuscripts, writing from desk or palm ofa hand;

e. Possessing any document with amala fide intent, whether used or not;

f. Approaching a teacher directly orindirectly to influence a grade; and

g. Any unruly behavior which disruptsacademic program.

If adoption of unfair means is detected, the studentmay be given an 'F' grade for that assignment /surprise test / report / examination or for thatcourse. Adoption of unfair means may also resultin the dismissal of the student from the program.

Appeal Against Grade

It is generally acknowledged that an individualteacher is the best judge of a student'sperformance in a given course. However, astudent may consider a grade to have beenunfairly assigned. In such cases, the student maywish to file a formal appeal against the grade withthe University of Dhaka through DSBM within oneweek of the publication of the result.

Student Conduct

Each student is responsible for knowing the rules,regulations, academic requirements anddisciplinary policies of DSBM. He/she is expectedto behave in accordance with good moral values,and the rules and regulations of DSBM either oncampus or outside. Politics is completelyprohibited in the campus. Any form of unrulybehavior will be subject to punishment includingexpulsion from the program.

The objective of the admission policy is to selectstudents on a competitive basis for the MBM Eveningprogram.

CGPA equivalence for those who have passedunder Division Class system is as follows:

All applicants, fulfilling the minimum requirements, sitfor an admission test comprising MCQ and writtensections. The admission test is of 150 minutes; 90minutes for the MCQ and 60 minutes for the writtenportion.

The MCQ section of the Test is designed to assess thegeneral merit of the applicant. The question structureand distribution of marks for the MCQ are as follows:

Selection Process

A graduate in any field of study with minimum 16 yearsof schooling having at least one first division/class andno third division/class in any examination is eligible toapply.

The written section of the test focuses on thewriting ability of the applicant in English. Thequestion structure and distribution of marksare as follows:

Any eligible candidate must apply in theprescribed form. The form along with a copy ofprospectus and sample test is available at theDSBM office on payment of Tk. 1000/- (non-refundable). These can also be obtained fromBIBM website.

Subject to attaining a minimum percentage ofmarks in different sections of the admissiontest, a maximum of top 200 applicants will becalled for viva-voce. Viva-voce will carry 10marks. Regardless of the score in theadmission test, an applicant will not be in thefinal merit list unless he/she obtains aminimum marks in the viva-voce. The finalmerit list of 50 students will be preparedaccording to the total marks obtained in theadmission test and viva voce.

Computer Laboratory

BIBM Campus

The Institute has two modern computerlaboratories with LAN system (IBM) and individualinternet facilities. The LAN is Windows 2003based. These laboratories provide BIBM traineesand MBM students with computer relatedservices. WiFi connectivity is available in DSBMpremise.

BIBM Library is fully automated having a richcollection of about 26,000 books. The Institutesubscribes to about 200 domestic and foreignjournals, magazines and other periodicals. BIBMalso subscribes online journal portal where fromthe users can get access to a wide collection ofvarious journals.

The Institute has a lush green campus. The mainbuilding is five storied. It houses the administrativeand faculty offices, conference rooms, lecture andseminar rooms, computer labs and library. It alsohas a cafeteria for the trainees and the students.The BIBM campus is well protected. BIBM hashostel facility which is available to thetrainees.

Medical Facilities

DSBM encourages all out development of astudent and for that it has ample facilities forvarious extra curricular activities. Studentsorganize cultural programs, sports, debates inBIBM premises. A number of clubs are involved inarranging these activities. Currently, Cultural andSocial Welfare club, Study and Business club,Sports club, Debating Language club are workingin respective fields. Each Student will be requiredto participate in at least one of those clubs.

A part-time doctor for consultation at its premisesis available.

Recreation

DSBM has modest recreation facilities for thestudents and trainees. It has indoor gamefacilities, TV room, prayer room and a gymnasiumequipped with fitness instruments. Besides,DSBM has a playground for outdoor games andsports.

The aim of this course is to impart knowledgeabout initiation of different forms of business andtheir management. This course focuses onunderstanding business environment, formationof different types of business, financingalternatives, marketing system, record keepingand human resource management.

This course is designed to furnish students with acomprehensive view of communication, its scopeand importance in business. The role ofcommunication in establishing a favorableexternal connectivity as well as effective internalinteractions is incorporated. The various types ofbusiness communication such as written, oral,graphics, etc. are covered. This course alsodevelops skill and style of succinct report writingfor modern business communication.

The purpose of the course is to acquaint and equipthe students with the basic mathematical toolsand techniques which are commonly used in thefield of economics, finance, banking and otheractivities. The course topics include elements ofarithmetic, mathematics of finance, functions,equations, set theory, geometry, logarithm,calculus and matrix. All these techniques will helpthe students to develop quantitative knowledge inorder to take various business decisions.

The objective of this course is to acquaint thestudents with the concepts, principles, techniquesand process of financial and managerialaccounting. This course will enable the studentsto understand financial accounting process, toevaluate financial statements of differentorganizations and to use managerial accountingtechniques in business decision making.

The objective of the course is to impart knowledgerelating to management theory and practice foreffective and efficient accomplishment oforganizational goals. Through the application ofmanagement tools and techniques students willapprehend a critical appraisal of real life situationsinvolving organizing, staffing and motivatingothers. The students are expected to build upskills relating to problem solving, valuing diversityand coping with change.

The purpose of this course is to provide studentswith a solid understanding of the economic theoryand analytical tools that can be applied in decisionmaking process of a firm including banks. Thecourse also aims at acquainting the students withthe macroeconomic fundamentals and basic toolsof macro policy and their implications in aneconomy.

The course is designed to equip the students withthe statistical tools and concepts used in thedecision making process in banks, financialinstitutions and other entities. Methods ofdescriptive and inferential statistics are coveredwith specific reference to measures of centraltendency, probability distribution, hypothesistesting, regression and correlation, time seriesanalysis for banking decisions.

The purpose of the course is to teach theapplication of marketing concepts, theories, andpractices as they relate to the management of themarketing function in an organization. Studentswill be exposed to the development, evaluation,and implementation of marketing management ina variety of business environments. Emphasis willbe given on the managerial aspects of marketingplans and strategies.

The objective of the course is to develop anunderstanding and appreciation of financetheories as they apply to corporate financialdecisions and to understand the implications forproblem solving. It gives illustration on financialmanagement practices and policies, processes,techniques and strategies that are used in thefinancial management.

The course is designed to provide an exposure tothe conceptual framework of banking and itsoperations. It will cover the various types ofbanking such as commercial, developmental,Islamic banking. Moreover, issues related withcentral bank, various laws related with bankingand practices of banking have also been coveredin the course.

The aim of this course is to impart knowledge onkey business areas of a commercial bank and tomake the students acquainted with practicalaspects of core banking operations. The coursefocuses on managing sources of fund, liquidity,credit operations and compliance with regulatoryissues. This course will enable the students todeliver commercial banking services and run abank branch prudently within the regulatoryframework.

The aim of this course is to impart knowledge onproject related activities and management. Thiscourse will cover the techniques of projectidentification, formulation, appraisal, andmanagement. Course will enable the students toappraise projects before financing.

This course has been designed to acquaint thestudents with the concepts and practices of thefacilitation of international trade payments andtechniques of financing by the banks. Keeping thisbroad aim in mind, topics related to the tradetheories, procedures of trade payments and tradefinance, documents, relevant regulations andpractices of trade payment and financing of banksin Bangladesh are incorporated in the coursecontents.

The objectives of the course are to explore thewhole issues of central banking like objectives,functions, autonomy, regulatory aspects of centralbanking, and various approaches of banksupervision. The course is expected to increasethe level of understanding of the students relatingto the role of central banking in combating bankfailure and financial crisis. A good part of thesyllabus is devoted on central banking inBangladesh. That will help the students to thinkabout the environment of central banking in ourcountry.

The course has been designed to equip thestudents to identify various risks and key players inthe risk management process. Different aspects ofbanking risk management process will beemphasized in the course. Role of regulators,board and management in the risk managementprocess will be discussed. In order to provideinsight into the risk management process of abank, core risk management guidelines and riskbased capital adequacy guideline will also becovered in this course.

The purpose of the course is to teach theapplication of bank marketing concepts, theories,strategies and practices as they relate to themanagement of marketing functions of acommercial bank. Students of this course will beexposed to the development, evaluation andimplementation of bank marketing management ina variety of banking environments. Primarily thiscourse aims to provide an in-depth appreciationand understanding of the unique challengesinherent in managing and delivering qualitybanking services.

The objective of the course is to develop athorough understanding of e-banking issues,concepts and operations. It will sensitize thestudents on the opportunities and challengesassociated with electronic banking and increasetheir capacity to plan for e-banking operations. The objectives of the course are to build upknowledge and develop innovative idea in thearea of rural banking and micro finance. The course aims at exposing the students to thekey concepts, basic characteristics, principle andpricing of derivative securities. It provides aworking knowledge of how derivative security canbe analyzed and used in portfolio managementand also examines the trading strategy of hedgingthe equity risk arising from the price volatility ofunderlying financial securities through financialderivatives, such as, stock option and indexfutures.
