Lag BaOmer is the 33rd day of the Omer, the period between Pesach and Shavuot. Lag BaOmer com- memorates the end of a great plague that struck Rabbi Akivas students. It is also the yahrzeit of one of Rabbi Akivas greatest students, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. Because Lag BaOmer is a day of cele- bration, the restrictions in place during the Omer (a semi-mourning period) are lifted. Many Jews have weddings and parties and get haircuts. Other customs include: spending time outdoors, shooting bows and arrows, and lighting bonfires. Activities for preschoolers on the playground included archery, visiting Rabbi Shimons caveand making a burning log craft. The Religious School students made peace arrows, ran relay races with 33 ping pong balls (to mark the count), and shaved balloons. We all joined together for a bonfireand games lead by our Shlicha (Israeli Ambassador), Naama Gold. And there were smores, because who can have a bonfire, real or otherwise, without smores? We have standards. In years past, the Lag BaOmer program has been exclusively a Preschool event held off-site. Last year was the first time the event took place here at Etz Hayim. It s always been a fun day, but this year, the Preschool and Religious School collaborated to expand the event. Older and younger siblings celebrated together and there was a real sense of community among the participants. Older Religious School students ran some of the stations, which gave them an opportunity to give back to the school and develop leadership skills. The Preschool and Religious School have collaborated on several events this year, including a Pajama Havdalah and monthly Minyan & Muffins events. One of the great benefits of collaborating on events is the professional relationship that develops. Work- ing together allows for a shared workload, and two heads are better than one at taking a basic idea and turning it into something bigger and more rewarding for all. Due to the positive results of our joint pro- gramming, we are already planning events for next year! These events connect our students (of all ages) to their Jewish faith and history, help them to make friends, and lay the foundation for our children to live Jewishly. So if you missed attending a family program this year, fear not. Preschool and Religious School Join Forces to Create Fabulous Programming By Alexis Joyce, Preschool Director, and Laura Naide, Director of Religious Education On May 14, the Religious School and Preschool joined forces for a Lag Ba’Omer program. Lag Ba’Omer is the 33rd day of the Omer, the period between Pesach and Shavuot. Lag Ba’Omer com-memorates the end of a great plague that struck Rabbi Akiva’s students. It is also the yahrzeit of one of Rabbi Akiva’s greatest students, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. Because Lag Ba’Omer is a day of cele-bration, the restrictions in place during the Omer (a semi-mourning period) are lifted. Many Jews have weddings and parties and get haircuts. Other customs include: spending time outdoors, shooting bows and arrows, and lighting bonfires. Activities for preschoolers on the playground included archery, visiting Rabbi Shimon’s “cave” and making a burning log craft. The Religious School students made peace arrows, ran relay races with 33 ping pong balls (to mark the count), and shaved balloons. We all joined together for a “bonfire” and games lead by our Shlicha (Israeli Ambassador), Na’ama Gold. And there were s’mores, because who can have a bonfire, real or otherwise, without s’mores? We have standards. In years past, the Lag Ba’Omer program has been exclusively a Preschool event held off-site. Last year was the first time the event took place here at Etz Hayim. It’s always been a fun day, but this year, the Preschool and Religious School collaborated to expand the event. Work-ing together allows for a shared workload, and two heads are better than one at taking a basic idea and turning it into something bigger and more rewarding for all. Due to the positive results of our joint pro-gramming, we are already planning events for next year! These events connect our students (of all ages) to their Jewish faith and history, help them to make friends, and lay the foundation for our children to live Jewishly. So if you missed attending a family program this year, fear not. There is much more to come!

JCCNV Outreach Program for 55+ Adults July Bulletin By Shelly Rosenstein Wednesday, July 12 -- The 40th Anniversary of Washington’s First Major Terrorist Attack: A Personal Account of the 1977 Hanafi Takeover Presenter: Paul Green, author of Forgotten Hostages Along with 125 of his colleagues, Paul Green, an executive at B’nai B’rith International, faced threats of beheading and death from the Hanafi Muslim terrorists who violently captured Washington’s B’nai B’rith building over 40 years ago. In another attack at the District’s government building across town, future mayor Marion Barry almost died from a shot-gun pellet. Hostages were also taken at a third location, the Islamic Center of Washington. This terrorist attack lasted over 40 hours, leaving two dead and dozens injured. Paul will tell his harrowing account of being a hostage that tragic day. He will also talk about what has happened since, including his close friendship with Iranian Ambassador Zahedi (who helped end the siege), and his recent interviews with NPR, WMAL and BBC Radio. Paul was also recently interviewed by a London filmmaker for a full-length docu-mentary. This is truly a program you should not miss!

10:30am –12:00pm. Beth El Congregation Cost: $5 / person RSVP: [email protected] or 703.537.3062 Wednesday, July 26 -- FILM: The Queen of Katwe It’s always nice to watch a feel-good movie, and Queen of Katwe is just that. It is the true story of Phiona who lives in the slums of Katwe, Uganda. Her world changes when she meets Robert Katende, a missionary who teaches chess. She becomes fascinated by the game, and after several years of winning competitions and tournaments, her life begins to change. This 11-year-old not only beats private-school pupils and university students to win the Ugandan championship, but goes on to represent Africa at the World Chess Olympiad at the age of 14. It is the amazing story of a young girl’s fight to escape poverty and save her family. The film stars Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo, and Oscar winner and Tony Award nominee Lupita Nyong’o. This movie has received wonderful reviews, including this from New York Times reviewer A.O. Scott: “If there is anyone out there capable of remaining unmoved by this true-life triumph-of-the-underdog sports story, I don’t think I want to meet that person.“ 10:30am –12:45pm.
