It ishard to believe that our school year isdrawing to a close. Somany great thingshavehappenedthisyear, and studentshave learned ahost of knowledgeand strategies in their effort to developinto lifelong learners. The lazy daysof summer are upon us, but that doesn’t mean the learningneedsto stop. According to Oxford Learning research, students lose about twomonthsof readingskillsand 2.6 monthsof math skillsover the summer. In the fall, teachersspend about sixweeksto makeup for thisdeficit. That isa lot of lossand time! Thissummer, take the opportunity tochallenge your child to read, think, beactive, andmake themost of every second spent together.Thank you for givingour school the privilege of educatingyour child!
ClassSizeBigSandy School'sphilosophy is to increase student achievement bymaintainingsmall classsizes. Next year (2017-2018) our elementary will add some classesin order to achieve this. Therewill be two sessionsof kindergarten: one in themorning, and one in the afternoon. Wewill haveone first grade, two second grades, two third grades, one fourth, and two fifth grades. The fourthand fifth gradeswill continue to rotate through the three teachers. Weare excited about next yearand look forward to further success!
Just a reminder…Elementary studentsare not allowed to have cell phonesor any communicativedevice in the classrooms. If studentshavea cell phone or similar device, they cankeep it in their locker or in a classroom drawer and can check it at recessor lunch. The student handbook addressesthis issue in further detail. Each classroom hasaphone if parentsare concerned about beingable to contact their child. Thank youfor your cooperation.
ElementaryFieldDay-Friday, May12thKindergarten through 5th grade studentswill participate in field eventsat thetrack in themorning. Kindergarten studentswill then bedismissed at theirnormal timewith ice cream in hand. In the afternoon, 1st through 5th gradestudentswill rotate through avariety of activities, endingat 2:30 p.m. Afterp.m. recess, the studentswill have a regular day except for the 3rd—5th graderswho will participate in theSTUCOelections from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. If you arethe parent, relative, or friend of a 1st—5th grade student, you canmakeareservation for lunch. May Students of the Month
This month, it was extremely difficult for teachers to choose only one studentof the month, so we have two. The two students are Hannah Stoliker, and VictorStonehouse. Both are in the fifth grade and Mrs. Mitchell nominated both of
these students. She said, “that they are hard-working, caring, and always helpfulin the classroom. One characteristic that stands out about both students is thatthey are always excited about learning. They view each assignment as a challenge
and work until they have successfully accomplished the task.”Thank you, Hannah and Victor, for being such great students at Big Sandy!

Summer SchoolBig Sandy students are required to meet high, academic standards. Sometimes we have to go beyond theregular school year to catch up with expectations. For a high school student looking to regain credits ora junior high student needing to pass a course to advance to the next grade, he/she can take an on-lineclass through Colorado Digital Learning Solutions. The summer school session runs June 5th throughJuly 28th, and after completion this would be for a semester credit. The cost of these courses is $210 perclass. You can register for courses at: www.coloradodls.org. At this time we do not offer summer schoolfor junior high or high school students at the school. There are other options available for summerschool, but would first need to be approved by Mr. Thieman or Mrs. Swennes before credit would beaccepted from another source.
Dress Code ReminderWarmer weather means shedding the coats and jeans and adorning clothing more suitable to summer-like conditions. Please be mindful of the dress code found in your Student Handbook. Some thingsnoted in the dress code that could be potential temptations include midriff shirts or other tight or low-cutclothing, sunglasses, shorts shorter than fingertip length, pajama bottoms, and tank tops or other similarclothing with straps narrower than 1.5 inches in width. Thank you for your attention in monitoring theseitems in the past. We have had a successful year, primarily because everyone has been so compliantwith the dress code.
2017-2018 Class RegistrationWe will begin registration for next school year. For those studentsreturning to Big Sandy Schools, a draft of the 2017-18 MasterSchedule and a form to enter first and second class choices will besent home. Students are to have parent’s signature when returningthe form to Mr. Thieman. In coordination with this event, we will holda freshman orientation for 8th grade students. In this orientation, wewill outline high school graduation requirements, encourage studentsto become actively involved in extracurricular activities, promoteleadership opportunities, and stress the importance of good studyhabits and positive choices. If you have questions pertaining topre-registration and/or freshman orientation, please contact Mr.Thieman or Mrs. Swennes.
Academic AwardsThis year’s academic awards will be held in the Big Gym on May 25th at 6:30 p.m. Students will berecognized with various awards from teachers and we will also be holding our BIG attendance and honorroll prize drawings.
