.Flying Start Week 3 This week Flying Start was met with some less than pleasant, wet and windy weather. Despite the bleak conditions, many young Flying Starters rugged up and made their way to their third week of school to experience some more fun and exciting activities, songs and games. Week 3 was enjoyed inside the nice warm classroom and marked with some funky elephant mask making, counting songs and a reading of Elmer and Wilbur by David McKee. Hopefully we will see some sun the same time next week!

Ben Webster, Louise Robertson and Sonny Woods make good use of the whiteboards to illustrate some marvellous

creations.

Sommer Gann and Ada Dunn work hard to create their

elephant masks in the likeness of Elmer from the daily story.

The Flying Starters enjoy their weekly counting song.

Bodi Waters carefully cuts and glues some colourful squares to decorate his elephant mask.

Kade Watling demonstrates how his elephant mask can be used with effect.

Ben Webster proudly shows off his work of art.

Mothers’ Day The P&C Mothers’ Day Stall was a great success with just over $825.25 raised for the students of the school. I hope you were delighted last Sunday when you opened your carefully chosen ‘surprise’ gift.

A big thank you to everyone who supported the stall and the band of committed helpers who worked in various capacities to ensure the stall operated successfully. A great team effort!

The staffroom was a hive of activity as a hardworking band

of helpers busily gift wrapped gifts in readiness for the Mothers’ Day stall.

Shoppers were spoilt for choice at the Mothers’ Day Stall.

Hannah Shipton’s face demonstrates her joy of giving.

Bella Holman and Sebastian Potts are obviously very happy

with the gifts they purchased for Mothers’ Day.

Kindergarten, Year 1 & Year 2 Assembly Item On Friday 29th May the students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will be performing their assembly item to tie in with Reconciliation Week 2015. In Term 1 the students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 were fortunate to participate in 5 weeks of Indigenous dance lessons from the dance studio, Dream Danz, which is based in Canberra.

Students will be performing an Indigenous inspired dance assembly item. For our item all students will be required to come dressed in black. Black trousers, tights and black jumpers would all be suitable for our item.

As our assembly item is celebrating Reconciliation Week, this assembly will be held at the special time of 10.45am, Friday 29th May. Please encourage all family and friends to come along to see this spectacular performance.

If you have any questions or concerns with costumes, please come and see one of the infants staff members, who will only be too happy to help.

Thank you Infants Teachers Snake Tales Michael Foster assisted by his Dad, Rob, brought along a special visitor to Kindergarten on Wednesday. “Monty”, Michael’s pet python was a wonderful news item to share. Michael told us many stories about Monty and how he looks after him at home.

Rob Foster, Monty and Michael Foster!

to play with their friends. • Students are ready to start school with the class without

being rushed or feeling frustrated. • They are present to hear important morning

announcements and the day’s routine. • Teachers and students who have already begun work

are not interrupted. • Students get into the habit of punctuality, which is

important in all aspects of life. • Arriving 20 minutes late to school each day, is the

equivalent of missing 11 school days in a year.

Thank you! This week Peaceful Parents, Happy Kids …. How to Stop Yelling and Start Connecting by Dr Laura Markham was donated to the school. I sincerely thank the Shipton family for pointing us in the direction of this great book. Are you a parent/carer or grandparent who volunteers at our school? We thank you! Thank you for giving up your time to make our school a collaborative learning environment. We appreciate all our helpers, no matter how much time they are able to give. We have many parents who volunteer to work in the canteen, read to our students, coach sporting teams, drive students to school events, man stalls, and participate in class activities.

Not because we want to make this process difficult, but because safety of our students is of utmost importance, our school is asking all its volunteers to undertake a Working with Children Check as per the attached fact sheet. Where previously you would have filled in a form and produced suitable identification to our school office, all current and future volunteers will need to fill in the online application form at: www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/check. Please choose 'Volunteer Worker' as only new employees are required to pay the $80 fee. Upon completing this online application, you will be required to produce identification at your nearest Motor Registry office. In coming days you will receive an email with your Working with Children Check number that you need to then provide to the school office before you can undertake volunteer work. This approval will last 5 years.

If you need to, you are welcome to use a computer at the office to complete the application online.

If you have any enquiries please contact the school office on (02) 48321213. NAPLAN Testing Over for Another Year! This week the students in Years 3 & 5 completed their NAPLAN tests. The Language, Writing, Reading and Numeracy Tests are very important and provide schools, students and their families with important information that can be used to best assist a young person’s education.

However, if the information gained is used to pit one child, or one school against another, the tests are of little positive value. Neither is the testing process a positive and productive one if students are belittled, punished or reprimanded for their poor results. Students entered into the testing process honestly and with good faith, striving to produce their very best. At Crookwell Public School students are encouraged to sit the tests and like all good schools, and responsible parents, we use this honest information to best assist a child’s academic progress.

The scores from the NAPLAN test will reveal how a child performed on the day but they cannot tell everything. The test is important but it only assesses a very, very narrow part of a child. It is not capable of measuring the many, many other aspects that make children unique and exceptional. The test doesn’t tell children how incredibly special they are.

Parents please recognise and praise the enormous effort your child has made this week and remember there is no way to test all the wonderful things that make your child an extra special person. Please make sure they each have an exceptional weekend.

Reminder for Kindergarten Parents The Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) will occur nationwide between May and July, 2015.

Celebrating 150 Years! Hidden Treasures Crookwell Public School is celebrating 150 years of public education this year and we would like to put a book together that features articles and photographs from our amazing past. If you, your parents, grandparents or great grandparents attended our school as a student or staff member and you have any documents, photos or any piece of history in a safe place at home we would love to have a copy of it to add to our 150th anniversary book. The office staff are more than happy to scan photos or other documents that you might have so we can add these to our collection. Please spread the word so we can make our 150th anniversary book a wonderful piece of history that families can enjoy for years to come.

Thank you, 150th Anniversary Committee Historical Public Education Snippets

Attendance 1880: The Public Instruction Act, 1880 required the attendance of children between the ages of 6 and 14 years for a period of not less than 70 days every half-year. Exemptions could be granted if the child lived more than 2 miles from the nearest school, was under regular instruction, was incapacitated through sickness, infirmity or other unavoidable cause from attending, or was already educated to the required standard. Blast from the Past This week’s photo is of our wonderful Kindergarten students from way back in 1990. The Crookwell Gazette reported at the time that ‘there were no tears’ as these little people begun their school life. The 27 students were greeted by the Kindergarten teacher Mr. Glen Atfield (Mr. Atfield’s brother) who was replacing Mrs Heather Davies who was going on maternity leave.

P&C News Well winter is well and truly here and I hope you are all managing to keep warm and healthy.

Last Friday the P&C held a Mothers’ Day stall, which was greatly supported by our students and I hope that all our wonderful mums and carers of our gorgeous students had a lovely Mothers’ Day and were spoilt rotten. I would like to say a great big thankyou to Suzie Anderson and her band of volunteers: Brooke, Peta, Emma, Kyly, Charlotte, Jackie, Kerri, Clare, Kelly, Jan & Bianca who volunteered their time by either wrapping all the gifts or managing the stall on Friday, or both. I have been advised that it was required that 3 mums took gifts home to continue wrapping well into Thursday night. The generosity of your time and support is greatly appreciated.

This week attached to the News and Views you will find an order form for our first pie drive of 2015. Stock up your freezers for the upcoming winter break to help keep those young, and older, empty tummies warm and happy. All order forms and full payment are due back to school by Friday 05/06/15.

Your orders will be delivered to school on Thursday 18/06/15 and should be ready to be collected after 10am.

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend, stay safe and have fun.

The Crookwell Picnic Race Club Challenge The Crookwell Picnic Race Club committee is faced with a challenge in order to race at Binda next year. Earlier this year Racing NSW staff deemed the race track not fit for racing. At a second track inspection with Racing NSW race track manager, proposals were put forward by the committee to make sure the track meets the requirements for next year.

The Club is prepared to inject around $30,000, which it will cost to fence the track, top-dress and seed. Ongoing expenses will including regular slashing of the track and removal of grass along the running rail.

Help is especially needed in the lead up to the race meeting: whipper-snipping and mowing, marking tent sites, putting rubbish bins out, erecting temporary fencing, cleaning, setting up the dining area and other tasks that the small committee is finding very difficult to do before race day. Help is also needed the day after the races when the area has to have all rubbish in the bins for the pick-up on Monday morning. The dining area has to be cleared, tables and chairs stacked, temporary fencing taken down and so on.

A public meeting will be held at the Crookwell Services Club on Thursday, 28th May at 7.30pm. If physical help is not forthcoming at the meeting, then the present committee members will be unable to do what is required to continue the proud tradition of the Binda Picnics.

If you are unable to attend the meeting but have ideas on how we can continue to race at Binda, please contact the President, David Culley, on 48 367 237, or secretary, Dianne Layden, on 48 32 1376 or 0466 996426.

Peter Pan takes to the Stage in Crookwell This classic children’s adventure hosts a large cast of 35 children, aged from 5 to 15 years and opens in Crookwell on Friday evening May 23 at 7.30pm. The cast will bring this story to life through story, song and dance.

Full of mischievous fun, this heart-warming children's play will stir your childhood memories while introducing you and your children to one of the world's most enduring and timeless classic tales. Peter Pan and Tinker Bell carry you off to the enchanted Neverland where children never grow up! There you will find all the beloved characters of this classic adventure: Captain Hook, Lost Boys, Pirates, Tiger Lily and Mermaids of the Lagoon. The role of Peter Pan and Wendy is shared by two actors- Jye Naughton and Taitan Hill and Wendy will be played by Kira Warren and Ellie Searle (everyone has a role in Peter Pan!) -Captain Hook is Zach George and his side kick Smee is Paddy Lowe, Tinkerbell is Taleisha Bill, and the Crocodile is Katie Simpson there is far too many to name but come along to one of the shows and watch our children SHINE.

The show runs over one weekend Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd starting at 7.15 for 7.30pm start and Sunday 24th at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start.

These children have been in rehearsals for many weeks now and though young have put in their best efforts to make this a fun and entertaining show. It is hoped that even if you do not have children involved our community will support these young actors and show them the encouragement they deserve for their many months of hard work and you may even be surprised at how much you will enjoy the show.

Tickets are on sale at the Crookwell Visitors Centre now – so book your seats, as there is nothing that thrills more than a good crowd - let’s show our kids we support their efforts. Hall will be heated and comfortable.

Budget Disappoints Public Education Again

The Federation of Parents and Citizens Associations of New South Wales (P&C Federation) is committed to ensuring the best education for our children. Our nation’s future rests in the education system that our children are learning in today. President of P&C Federation Mr Jason Vials said this morning that it is extremely disappointing that last night's Federal budget did not reverse the unfair budget cuts to education the Federal Government made last year. “P&C Federation has long called for the Gonski recommendations to be fully funded and implemented. These cuts to the Gonski funding model are a broken promise, but their significance is in the reduction of opportunity for all students in public schools in Australia” President Vials went on to say. P&C Federation calls on the Federal Government to give our children the education they deserve, to release their potential for the benefit of all Australians. Our students and our school communities deserve to be funded on a model that supports need and helps to bridge any gap in educational outcomes. President Vials continued, “P&C Federation urges all governments to think about the real and long term implications of funding changes. We support both Federal and State governments in pursuing their goals to ensure that teacher quality is exceptional, that legislation is good policy not political point scoring and that all children have access to a diverse, relevant and engaging education by adequately resourcing our education system. The work has been done in the Gonski review. We now need the commitment of politicians at all levels to the future of education in Australia.”
