MAY 10th PAWTUCKET (15-15) at SYRACUSE (15-15) 6:35 pm Pawtucket Red Sox RHP William Cuevas (1-1, 2.93) vs. Syracuse Chiefs LHP Tommy Milone (1-2, 5.34) Something’s Gotta Give in Syracuse – The 2nd-place Pawtucket Red Sox (at 15-15) play the 2nd-place Syracuse Chiefs (AAA-Washington, also at 15-15) for the first time this season when they open a 4-game series tonight at 6:35 pm at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse. The Chiefs are the lone IL North division rival the PawSox have yet to face this season…Pawtucket is 8-10 vs. the IL North thus far. The winner this evening will at least stay in 2nd-place as four clubs currently are tied for 2nd in the division – all with .500 records (Pawtucket, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo). All are -1½ GB of front-running Lehigh Valley. Things may sort themselves out a little bit this weekend (or maybe not) as the PawSox and Chiefs play again tomorrow and Saturday nights (both at 6:35 pm) and then the series (and Sox roadtrip finale) on Sunday at 1:05 pm. Tough Trip Thus Far - The PawSox are 0-3 on this 7-game roadtrip after getting swept in a 3-game series at Lehigh Valley the past three days. It marked the first time the Sox have been swept in a series this season and their first 3-game sweep they have suffered since last August 4-6 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Pawtucket was held to just 2 runs (on only 15 hits) in 27-innings during the 3-game series vs. the IronPigs losing 4-1, 4-1, and 3-0. The Sox have now scored a total of 2 runs in their last 34-innings since scoring twice in the bottom of the 1st-inning on Sunday in their 2-0 win at home vs. Scranton/WB. The Road Home - The PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a 3-game series vs. the Buffalo Bisons this coming Monday & Tuesday nights (at 6:15 pm) and Wednesday morning (11:05 am). That will be it for the homestand as the PawSox are in the midst of brief stays at home. They began May with a 3-game homestand vs. Rochester (April 30 – May 2), had a 2-game homestand vs. Scranton/WB over last weekend (May 5 & 6), and will have this upcoming 3-game homestand vs. Buffalo from May 14-16. Pawtucket will finally enjoy an extended homestand from May 21-28 when they play 9-games over 8-days vs. Scranton/WB (4- games) and Lehigh Valley (5-games). 2017 Season-Series vs. Syracuse – Pawtucket hopes to have similar success against Syracuse this season as they did last year when they went 15-5 vs. the Chiefs including a 9-1 record at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse. The PawSox were actually 15-2 at one point vs. Syracuse last season before getting swept in a 3-game set last August 1-3 vs. the Chiefs at McCoy. The 15 wins against one opponent in a season tied a PawSox franchise-record…the Sox have won 15 games against an International League club on a couple of occasions – most recently prior to last year when they went 15-1 vs. Lehigh Valley in 2008 – but they have never won 16 games vs. another IL team in a single season. Recap vs. Syracuse Last Year - Pawtucket won 3 of 4 from the Chiefs at McCoy from April 10-13, 2017 (taking the final three games after Syracuse spoiled Pawtucket’s home-opener), swept an abbreviated 2-game set on May 2 & 3 in Syracuse, swept a 3-game set at McCoy from June 5-7, won 3 of 4 again in Syracuse from June 13-15, swept a 4-game set at the ‘Cuse last July 13-16 during their final trip to Syracuse (when they out-scored the Chiefs, 27-6 in that series), but then ended the season-series by getting swept by Syracuse in a 3-game set at McCoy from August 1-3. Stats vs. the Chiefs in 2017 - The PawSox out-scored the Chiefs, 107-61 in the season-series in 2017. The Sox hit .293 in the 20 games vs. Syracuse (easily their best against any other club) with 25 HR including 7 HR by Rusney Castillo (Rusney hit .368 in 18 games vs. the Chiefs with 9 2B, 7 HR and 16 RBI last year). PawSox pitchers went 15-5 with a 3.05 ERA vs. Syracuse last year. Getting to Know You - These two teams will meet 18 times this season…11 in Syracuse and 7 in Pawtucket. The Sox and Chiefs will go at it again in one month and that 3-game seires will also be in Syracuse (from June 11-13). The Chiefs finally make their first appearance at McCoy Stadium for a 3-game series from June 22-24. NEXT ON TAP - The probable pitching match-ups for the remainder of the series at Syracuse: Fri. 6:35 pm RHP Chandler Shepherd (1-2, 5.33) vs. RHP Austin Voth (2-1, 2.49) Sat. 6:35 pm RHP Justin Haley (1-4, 3.60) vs. RHP Erick Fedde (1-1, 4.55) Sun. 1:05 pm LHP Josh Smith (0-1, 1.86) vs. RHP Edwin Jackson (0-1, 4.56)
What Have You Done For Me Lately – Pawtucket has presently lost 3 in a row to match their longest losing skid of the season thus far (from April 29 – May 1). They need a win tonight to avoid their longest losing streak since a 4-gamer last August 12-15. Just prior to this current skid, the PawSox had posted a 3-game winning streak from May 4-6 that equaled their longest winning streak of the season (also 3 straight from April 20-22). The Sox have not won 4 consecutive games since a 5-game winning streak last August 7-11. Back Where We Started – The PawSox (now at 15-15) had matched their season-high of 3-games over the .500 mark on Sunday (at 15-12) from April 28 when they were 11-8. They have not been 4-games above .500 since last July 20 (50-46). The Sox went over .500 on April 21 for the first time since last July 30 when they were 54-53. The PawSox need a victory tonight to avoid falling below .500 for the first time since April 18 at 5-6. First for a Little While – The PawSox have moved into sole possession of 1st-place atop the IL North on Sunday. They remained their on Monday, but have been tied for 2nd since Tuesday. Sunday marked the first time the PawSox had been in 1st-place in the division since they started last year with a 2-0 record and were alone in 1st on April 8, 2017. First Come First Served – Some early trends for the PawSox thus far…they are 11-0 when they score first in a game, 12-0 when they lead after 6-innings, and 12-1 when they score more than 3 runs in a game. Conversely, the Sox are 4-14 when the opponent scores first, 2-13 when trailing after 6-innings, and 3-13 when they score 3 runs or less in a game. Busy May - The PawSox have begun a busy May at 4-4. Pitchers have led the way posting a 2.91 ERA this month (25 ER in 77.1 IP) while batters are hitting .215 with 7 HR and 21 runs (2.3 runs per game) in 9 May games (61-for-284). The Sox are slated to play 31 games in 31 days in May (including a make-up doubleheader on May 26 at 4:05 pm at McCoy) with just one scheduled off-day (May 17) during the entire month. 16 games this month will be at McCoy and 15 on the road with all but the final three coming against IL North division clubs. Pawtucket plays Rochester 5 times (1-1), Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 8 times (3-1), Lehigh Valley 8 times (0-3 thus far), Syracuse 4 times, and Buffalo 3 times to cover most of May. After facing each of their IL North rivals from now through Memorial Day, the final three games of the month will be at IL South foe Norfolk from May 29-31. April Comes up a Winner – The PawSox posted a winning April for the 6th time in the last 8 years as they finished the month with an 11-10 record and in 2nd-place in the IL North (-2 GB of front-running Syracuse). Pawtucket has had just one losing month of April since 2010 and that came last year (10-12). Since 2011 the Sox have gone 13-10, 16-9, 15-12, 16-11, 14-8, 11-11, 10-12, and 11-10 in April. The Sox hit .233 in April with 16 HR in 21 games while pitchers were 11-10 with a 3.51 ERA along with a league-leading 230 strikeouts in 190 innings. Series Business – The PawSox are 4-5-2 in their first 11 series of the season (4 series wins, 5 lossses, and 2 series split). Pawtucket finished 13-17-12 in their 42 series last season. Throwing Strikes – Pawtucket pitchers are 2nd in the International League with 299 strikeouts (10 behind Durham). Sox hurlers have posted strikeout games of 20 (April 9), 18 (April 20), 15 (twice), 14 (twice), 13, 12, 11 (twice), and 10 (six times) this season. Close Encounters – The Sox are 7-3 in 1-run games this season…tied with Syracuse (7-6) for the most 1-run victories in the league thus far. Pawtucket’s .700 winning pct. in 1-run games is the best in the IL. Working Overtime – The PawSox and Syracuse have both played an IL-high five extra inning games already this season and both are 4-1. Pawtucket has played four overtime games at home (winning 3 of those 4 extra inning games at McCoy). Blanketed – The PawSox have been shutout 6 times already this season. Last year it took until Game #99 on July 23 before the Sox were shutout for the 6th time (3-0 at Norfolk). Pawtucket was blanked 9 times total in 2017. They went 18-9 in shuout games last year. They are 3-6 in shutout games thus far in 2018. Always a Battle vs. Syracuse - The all-time series between Pawtucket and Syracuse is tight as the PawSox hold a 414-400 advantage in regular-season play (since 1973). Until 2015 & 2016, Pawtucket had lost a season-series vs. Syracuse just once in the previous 8 years (going 7-9 in 2009). The PawSox went 12-4 vs. the Chiefs in 2007, 10-6 in 2008, 7-9 in 2009, 8-8 in 2010, 8-8 in 2011, 9-7 in 2012, 9-7 in 2013, and 8-8 in 2014 before going 5-14 in 2015 and 8-11 in 2016. They rebounded emphatically by going 15-5 vs. Syracuse in 2017. Syracuse was affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays for many years but 2009 marked their first as the Triple-A affiliate for the Washington Nationals. The PawSox own the longest current affiliation with a major league club of any team in the IL as they have been with the Boston Red Sox since 1973. A Look Back Before We Go Forth – Pawtucket finished 67-75 last year and in 4th-place in the IL North for the second straight season. They dropped to a season-low 9-games under .500 on August 26 at 62-71. On July 18, 2017 the PawSox were a season-best 6-games over .500 at 50-44. Pawtucket finished 34-36 in games played at McCoy Stadium last season. Thus they finished with just their second losing season at McCoy in the last 8 years. The Sox went 33-39 on the road.
BOSTON RED SOX DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM – Portland (9-19) – The Portland Sea Dogs (AA) took 2 of 3 at New Hampshire including a 7-1 last night. Mike Shawaryn (2-3) was the starter and winner with 7 shutout innings – 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 SO. Tony Renda led the offense with 3 hits and 1 RBI, Josh Ockimey had 2 hits including a solo HR (#3), and Austin Rei was 2-for-3 with a single, double, and 1 RBI.

Santiago Espinal (2 RBI), Brett Netzer (1 RBI), and Chris Madera (1 RBI) all had 2 hits apiece Greenville (8-24) – The Greenville Drive (A) were crushed at Kannapolis, 10-2 last night. For perspective…Pawtucket made 197 player transactions in 2016. In 2015 they made 220 player moves and in 2014 they ended up with a total of 209 player transactions. The Sox used 57 players in 2016, 62 different players in 2015, and they employed 61 different players during the 2014 regular-season (that number rose to 66 players including the post-season). The club-record is 70 different players set in in both 1995 and 2006. Pawtucket promoted 20 players to Boston in 2016, 23 in 2015, and 25 different players in 2014.
