Welcome to Year 2

At Sir Thomas Abney, we follow the National Curriculum for Mathematics and as children move to year 2 we continue to teach a programme called Mathematics Mastery in preparation for their year 2 SATs and moving up to Key Stage 2. The core principles of the scheme are that:

Fewer topics are taught but to greater depth

Mastery for all pupils

Number sense and place value come first

Problem solving is central

Children are encouraged to talk about maths and explain their reasoning

Pupils are not going to be ‘climbing’ the curriculum, but going deeper into it. In Year 2 it is imperative that pupils have a full understanding of number sense, number bonds and place value, as all number work in maths builds on what is taught here.

10 maths skills your child should have by the end of Year 2

Pupils are developing fluency, reasoning skills and their ability to solve problems through the following mathematical content:

1. Count forward and backwards in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from zero and in 10’s from any number.

Page 2: Mathematics in Year 2 - sirthomasabney.hackney.sch.uksirthomasabney.hackney.sch.uk/.../Parent-Leaflet-Year-2-Booklet-styl… · Mathematics in Year 2. 2. Know their number bonds to

2. Know their number bonds to 10 and 20, for example:

7+3 =10 20- 2 =18

3. Add or subtract any two two-digit numbers eg 23+32

4. Understand and recognise odd and even numbers

5. Recognise, find, name and write simple fractions such as I/2, 1/4/ ¾

6. Choose sensible units of measure to measure length (cm/m), mass (kg/g), temperature (c) and capacity (litres/ml).

7. Tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes including quarter past and quarter to and know how many minutes in an hour and hours in a day.

8. Recognise pounds (£) and pence (p) and combine coins to make amounts.

9. Identify and describe 2D and 3 D shapes in the everyday objects and order and arrange objects and numbers to form patterns.

10. Know directions such as North, South East and West, positions and turns.

Everyday maths at home to help your child

1. Help them to learn their times tables and hear them practice.

2. Play games that help their maths skills: Snakes and Ladders, Junior Monopoly, Shopping games (such as Orchard Toys) and snap games with cards.

3. Give them practice with coins, notes and change when shopping.

4. Involve them in measuring when cooking.

5. Have a height chart in their room to record their height and discuss their growth.

6. Practice the language of telling the time using an analogue clock.

7. Talk to them about the calendar – days, weeks, a fortnight, months and the year.

8. Sit with them whilst they complete their Mathletics homework and help them if they are stuck. Let the teacher know if your child found it too challenging.

Language that your child may use when talking about maths

The Maths section of the school website includes a glossary of all the main mathematical terms used by teachers and children from Reception to Year 6 including the main language that will be introduced during year 2.

End of Year 2 SATs

During May, year 2 children sit two maths papers: Arithmetic and Reasoning. These assess the children on their basic maths skills with some challenging questions to assess whether they are at ‘greater depth’. At Sir Thomas Abney we try to ensure that these are completed in a way that is not stressful to the children – they may be done over several sessions with children completing them in small groups, if necessary they might have them read to them or they may take breaks doing only a few questions at a time. Examples of the types of questions can be found in past papers at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/key-stage-1-tests-2018-mathematics-test-materials.

Curriculum Map and Programme of Study for Year 2

Below you will find the links to the Curriculum Map and Programme of Study for the year which give the general structure that teachers will follow when planning. This can be altered due to other events on the timetable or because it is felt that more or less time needs to be spent on a particular topic:
