Description:

This course builds the foundation for understanding selected concepts taken from topics which include algebra,

set theory, logic, geometry, probability and statistics. Critical thinking skills, problem solving strategies,

communicating mathematically and appropriate use of technology will be incorporated throughout the course

via activities and projects. 47 contact hours

Prerequisite: MAT 0028 with a minimum grade of C, or MAT 0055 with a minimum grade of C, or MAT

0056 with a minimum grade of C, or MAT 0990 with a minimum grade of C, or an appropriate score on the

mathematics placement test.

Course information and rationale: In this course we will cover a variety of topics in mathematics, ranging from critical thinking and problem

solving to statistics and probability. The textbook, Math Lit, will serve as the basis for the course but many

other materials will be used to reinforce the course learning objectives. The course is designed to make you

more aware of mathematics in the world around you. We will use MyMathLab (MML), an online repository of

course materials and assessments for this class.

I believe that cooperative learning is a very effective method for students to learn mathematics. In our course,

cooperative learning will be accomplished using classroom activities and through the use of teams. Teams are

used in all facets of our society and results from SPC employer surveys shows that employers need workers

who can be highly productive in a team environment. You will be given the ability to use Angel email to

communicate with your team members and to share electronic files if needed.

The cycle projects will be completed as team projects. All members of each team will receive the same grade

for the project unless the team self-assessments indicate that one or more team members did not contribute

equally to the project report. Teams will have time to work on all assignments and projects in class. It is

important for teams to be efficient when working with one another such that they complete the desired tasks in

class.

You may use any of the computers in the library or labs on campus. If you use your home computer, you must

have a Java enabled Internet browser. In particular, Firefox is the recommended browser to use with Angel. If

Grading: Your course grade will be determined by the following components and scale.

A: 90-100% B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: 0- 59%

Assignments:

There is a required syllabus quiz that must be completed with a score of 100% to unlock the course materials in

Angel. This grade will be recorded as the first quiz.

Classwork/Attendance (5% of course grade): This will usually be either group work to be completed and

submitted in class or points for simply showing up for the entire class.

Homework (30% of course grade): There is MML homework assigned for each cycle section. MML homework

has due dates as shown in MML and Angel. If you access a homework at least once before the due date, you

can redo the homework at a later date to improve your homework grade. You must, however, score at least

60% on each section homework to gain access to the related quiz. The due dates for homework are shown in

this syllabus and in MML before midnight. I do not extend due dates so be sure to complete quizzes on time.

Recap Quizzes (20% of course grade): You are given three attempts for each recap quiz. The highest grade for

each quiz is used. Each time you take a quiz you will get different questions. The due dates for the quizzes are

shown in this syllabus and in MML before midnight. I do not extend due dates so be sure to complete quizzes

on time.

Cycle Projects (15% of course grade): Each Cycle has a group project at the end. All group members will

receive the same grade for the project unless the self-assessment indicates that all members did not contribute

equally as discussed previously. Instructions and a grading rubric will be provided for each project in Angel.

During finals week, each student/group will make a presentation on the last project.

Projects submitted after the due date will be accepted, however, the score for the project will be dropped by one

letter grade for every day beyond the due date. For example, if a project is due on Tuesday, October 14 and it is

submitted on Thursday October 16, the project grade will be lowered by 2 letter grades since the project was

submitted 2 days late. If you miss a project, the missed project will be given a zero in your overall grade

calculation.

Project reports that are submitted by the due date and do not receive all points shown in the grading rubric can

be resubmitted within 7 days; the resubmitted report may be awarded additional points, up to a maximum of ½

of the points not originally earned. Project reports that are submitted after the due date are not eligible for re-

submission.

Portfolio (30% of grade): Each student will build a portfolio of their course work. The portfolio includes self-

assessments before and after each cycle, vocabulary check for each cycle, selected homework problems from

the textbook, and a self evaluation. The portfolio will be collected at the end of each cycle and a portfolio

checklist is available in each cycle folder in Angel to help you organize the required materials.

Attendance:

Active Class Participation:

You must attend all scheduled time starting week 3. You may miss up to 3 classes if needed, but this is not recommended since your team depends on you. Upon the 3rd unexcused absence, you will receive a warning

email. Upon the 4th unexcused absence, the instructor will trigger the Early Alert system and you will be

contacted by a Student Support Specialist. An “excused” absence is determined by the instructor and is

considered to be an unrepeated, unplanned and unavoidable event that prevents the student from being in class and can be documented. Students should contact the instructor immediately by email when they are aware that

they will not be in class, regardless of whether the absence is excused or unexcused.

When a student is excessively late to class or leaves early too many times, this is considered an unexcused absence. The student will receive a warning email as an opportunity to correct the behavior before the absence

is recorded.

You will be administratively withdrawn if you are not actively participating in the class. Please note that withdrawals from this class can ONLY be initiated by the student. The instructor CANNOT withdraw you from

the class.

Students should expect to spend at least 6 hours per week on course assignments, separate from our weekly

class meeting.

WITHDRAWALS: Students may not change from credit to audit after the end of the first week of classes. The

last day that a student can withdraw and receive a refund is August 22, 2014. The last day that a student may

withdraw with a course grade of “W” is October 23, 2014. Students may not change from credit to audit after

the end of the first week of classes. After October 23, 2014, students will be given the grade that they earn in

the class: NO W’S ARE GIVEN AFTER OCTOBER 23, 2014.

It is the responsibility of the student wishing to withdraw from the course to do so by OCTOBER 23,

2014. Any student wishing to withdraw from the course must do so his or her self online in the MY SPC

registration area found at http://www.spcollege.edu . All students registered in the course after OCTOBER 23,

2014 will receive a grade as outlined in your syllabus.

If this is your third time taking the course, you cannot withdraw (State of Florida regulation), and not meeting

the attendance requirement will result in a grade of F. Students who abandon the course or do not withdraw

themselves by OCTOBER 23, 2014 are subject to receive a grade of F or WF.

STUDENT SURVEY OF INSTRUCTION

Every student is expected to complete the Student Survey of Instruction survey (SSI) which will be available

online about three quarters of the way through the class. The survey is used to determine the strengths and

weakness of the course material and instruction. It is anonymous, and students will be able to check NA to

every question if they wish to do so. There will be a point in this class, however, where students will not be

permitted to move on to the next part of the course without completing the survey, and we hope that all students

will take the time and provide us with the evaluation feedback which is so helpful in improving our courses and

College.
