Students at the University are supported by the various services Bocconiprovides before, during and after their studies. Staff is available for help withtuition and fees, housing, internships and study abroad, as well as puttingstudents in contact with employers to pursue job opportunities. For international students, the Guidance and Recruitment Office providesinformation on application procedures and all aspects of Bocconi admissions. In addition, support is given to admitted students in defining the optimalindividual study plan within the program they have chosen. And Bocconioffers a particularly varied set of optional courses that can help studentsdevelop high-level competencies in the exact field they are interested in.

Bocconi’s offer is divided into two main degree cycles, with three-yearundergraduate programs (Bachelor) followed by two-year graduate programs(Master of Science). The 3 + 2 format follows the European Credit Transferand Accumulation System, allowing students to receive degrees after therequired total of 180 undergraduate and 120 graduate credits. In addition, along with diplomas, graduates receive a Diploma Supplement providingdetails of the courses taken and a breakdown of credit allocation. This makesthe student’s accomplishments much more comprehensible and transferable, whether for subsequent studies or for professional purposes. Europeanagreements include a third study cycle – such as the PhD programs offered atBocconi – for students who have obtained a Master of Science degree andare interested in academic or research careers. Also, a parallel track exists inthe form of one-year Specialized Master programs which are focused onspecific professions, rather than on further study.

Whatever your choice will be, the bottom line is that Bocconi provides first-rate education with curricula and facilities that meet the highest Europeanstandards and broaden your prospects for the future.

Post-graduate international programs

Università Bocconi’s founder, businessman Ferdinando Bocconi, was a greatbeliever in commerce as a driver of ideas and culture. In line with thisphilosophy, Bocconi has always been one of Italy’s most open academicinstitutions – open to the world and to international intellectual exchange, andoffering a number of programs in English that range from the undergraduatelevel to PhD degrees. In addition to the Master of Science programs, Bocconioffers a one-year Specialized Master program in English called the Master ofQuantitative Finance and Risk Management. Specialized Master programsare aimed at specific careers, and are also open to holders of non-economicsdegrees. The SDA Bocconi School of Management runs a number of Masterprograms for those who already have three or more years of professionalexperience. These include an outstanding MBA which is among Europe’s bestprograms according to the Financial Times. In addition, SDA Bocconi offers awide range of programs in English for an international student body. Studentslooking for a career in research or academia can apply to one of Bocconi’sPhD programs in English.

7

The Bocconi Graduate School runs Master of Science programs, SpecializedMaster programs and one specialization program in economics and management. In 2011-2012, it will offer 7 two-year Master of Science programs taught entirely inEnglish: International Management; Marketing Management; Accounting, Controland Financial Management; Finance; Economics and Management in Arts,Culture, Media and Entertainment; Economic and Social Sciences; Economics andManagement of Innovation and Technology. The various Bocconi Master ofScience programs taught in Italian are also open to international students.

Getting a Bocconi Master of Science degree is a smart move for a number ofreasons. First, these programs have the flexibility to pave the way either for ahigh-level entry into the job market or further study (in research or toward aPhD). Second, their two-year duration allows for the consolidation of a strongfoundation (during the first year) followed by a year of in-depth specializationthat allows students to develop a specialized and advanced study plan thanksto Bocconi's extremely extensive list of optional courses available to students. In addition, many programs are held entirely in English, so your Master ofScience degree will open opportunities for you around the world in the linguafranca of global business.

International students are required to study Italian plus another European language, while native Italian speakers must study two European tongues, so that all post-graduates will be able to approach the job market ready to work in three or fourlanguages. A fourth advantage lies in Bocconi’s distinguished international facultyand highly practical teaching methods: teamwork, business games, simulationsand appearances by business leaders make up an important part of the teachingtime. Each class divides into smaller groups in order to get the most out of theseactivities, with the support of tutors drawn from research and PhD programs. AtBocconi you are offered sophisticated learning, but with both feet on the ground.

Many international opportunities, such as Double/Joint Degrees, internshipand exchange programs are available. The Double/Joint Degree programs offer to a selected number of graduatestudents the possibility of spending the first year at Bocconi, acquiring coreknowledge and skills, and to specialize in the field of interest while attending thesecond year at one of the foreign host institutions. The partner institutions, selected from among the most prestigious international universities, are:Rotterdam School of Management - RSM, Erasmus Universiteit (Rotterdam,The Netherlands), HEC (École des Hautes Etudes Commerciales, Paris, France),ESADE (Escuela Superior de Administración y Dirección de Empresas, Barcelona,Spain), CBS (Copenhagen Business School, Copenhagen, Denmark), Sciences-Po (Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris, Paris, France), University of Geneva(Geneva, Switzerland), Fudan University (Shanghai, China), UniversitéCatholique de Louvain (Louvain, Belgium), MGIMO (Moscow State Universityfor International Relations, Moscow, Russia), IIMA (Indian Institute of Management– Ahmedabad, India), HSG (St. Gallen, Switzerland), SUNY (New York StateUniversity at Albany, USA), FGV-EAESP (Escola de Administração de Empresasde Sãn Paulo da Fundação Getulio Vargas, San Paolo, Brazil), Stockholm

School of Economics (Stockholm, Sweden), Queen’s School of Business(Kingston, Canada), and Universidade Católica Portuguesa - Faculdade deCiências Económicas e Empresariais (Lisboa, Portugal). The programs require theattendance of a whole academic year abroad and at the end of the programstudents receive both a Bocconi Master of Science and a Master of Science fromthe partner institution, or a joint Master of Science degree from the two partnerinstitutions. This is the type of challenging initiative offered only by top-tierEuropean universities, and is an indicator of Bocconi’s high standing in the arena ofinternational higher education. The program is directed at highly-motivated andcapable students, both Italian and international, who have a good mastery ofEnglish and are interested in studying and working in an international context.

A further opportunity for international study is offered by the CEMS - GlobalAlliance in Management Education, of which Bocconi is a founding member. An exclusive CEMS-MIM diploma is awarded to graduates of this program, in addition to Bocconi’s Master of Science in Management or InternationalManagement. A selected number of Management / InternationalManagement students can be admitted to the CEMS-MIM program,in the form of a specialization path for the second year of the program. CEMS-MIM is ranked second among graduate programs in management in Europe by the Financial Times.

InternationalManagement

taught in English

The International Management programaddresses the managerial issues companiesmust face when expanding abroad.Graduates from this program are highlyattractive to international firms because theybring an ability to apply their technical andsocial skills to cross-border business issues, and because they access a network ofcontacts through the professors andbusiness leaders involved in the program. They can cover management positions atItalian companies operating in other countries,or handle functional and industry-specificduties for large international corporations. Double Degrees with foreign universities, along with attractive exchange programs andcompany internships, ensure thatparticipants gather firsthand internationalexperience. International Managementstudents may apply to the prestigious CEMS-MIM program (Master in InternationalManagement - MIM, offered by CEMS - GlobalAlliance in Management Education).

9

What are the relevant skills which a Masterof Science in International Management

enables you to acquire? The aim of the program is to shape students intosuccessful managers able to work in an internationalcontext. The Master of Science in InternationalManagement is unique in its structure, as it includesboth soft aspects, such as strategy and organization ininternational contexts, and technical aspects such asquantitative methods applied towards management. Thanks to the Master of Science’s varied curriculum,International Management students learn not only themost advanced management techniques, but alsothe best way to communicate those techniques. Atthe end of the program, in fact, students are able tosupport their arguments with pertinent quantitativeanalyses. Our students have a rich classroomexperience while interacting with their multiculturalclassmates and the international faculty. In addition, during the second year of study, students have thepossibility to gain interesting personal experiences inforeign countries thanks to the many work and studyopportunities such as internships, exchangeprograms, Double Degree programs and the CEMS-MIM master. Therefore, our students have anattractive CV and are able to compete for top jobs.

The skills needed to manage culturaldifferences are hard to teach.

What strategies are used? This is absolutely true – it is hard to teach emotionalintelligence. But you can learn to be an excellent leaderin a cross-cultural context. There are the so-called“natural born leaders” that have plenty of charisma andpositive energy, able to manage every situation andchallenge. But they probably make up less than 1% ofthe total population of managers. Most managers canstudy – and have studied – their own behavior, skills andattitudes, and have polished their leadership traits. Wesupport the development of these skills by discussingcase studies, through meetings with external expertsand practitioners, role play and business games. International exchange programs and internships aredecisive occasions for testing this knowledge anddefining your personality in international contexts. We have designed the Double Degree program andjoined the CEMS-MIM master program in order toencourage international experience. We involve

students as much as possible during class, oftenthrough group projects, to develop their emotionalintelligence to better handle cultural differences ininterpersonal relationships. Our group of students is an international one, madeup of people from many different countries. Thisdiverse mix of cultures is itself a learning experiencewhich allows students to deal with multiculturalsituations on a daily basis.

What is the teaching method of theprogram like and what are its most

innovative characteristics? We create a learning environment that simulatesmanagerial decision-making and forces students to getinto the driver’s seat and find viable solutions forcompany issues in ambiguous situations.Consequently, group presentations and classparticipation are an integral part of student evaluation. The teaching method of the Master of Science inInternational Management is completely different fromthat of the Bachelor program as it requires ongoingstudent involvement. In practice, we see this graduatedegree as a bridge between the purely academic worldand work experience. We assume that basic conceptsare known to students and therefore emphasize theirapplication to practical issues during our program.

During the second year of the Master ofScience in International Management

students can create a customized study path. How does this work? The second year represents an opportunity forstudents to express their interest in a specificspecialization area. Students must earn 24 credits inthis year of the program from exams held at Bocconi orabroad. Over 70 elective courses are taught in Englishat Bocconi and all students have the opportunity toimprove their Italian during the first year of the programby attending courses offered at the Language Center. The program does not offer suggested study paths, but students can define their specialization withoutany added requirements by integrating study abroadprograms or international internships. This choiceallows students to take advantage of all theinternational and placement offers available and tocreate a unique study path that is highly valued bythe international job market.

MarketingManagement

Who should apply for the Master of Scienceprogram in Marketing Management?

The core idea of the program in MarketingManagement is that marketing is not just aboutintuition. As such, we are interested in students witha solid foundation in economics. As a division withinorganizations and a managerial mindset, we believethat marketing is based not only on intuition andcreativity, but on a set of identifiable, actionable, andlearnable tools. And the simple objective of the twoyears of the program in Marketing Management is toopen this toolbox to our students, rummagingaround in it and applying individual analysis, planning, and implementation tools to specificcompany cases. Our students are motivated andintellectually curious people, who are ready tochallenge themselves in an international academiccontext that closely matches professional life. Webelieve that Bocconi and its program in MarketingManagement offer one of the best pre-experiencegraduate programs in Europe, precisely due to itsmix between tools and practical applications, leading our graduates to careers in marketing andgeneral management in the best companiesinternationally.

What are the contents of the MarketingManagement program?

Marketing is one of the key functions inorganizations and marketing professionals areamong a company’s core assets. The MarketingManagement program offers not only a solidknowledge of the conceptual tools and theirindividual strengths and weaknesses, but also theactual context of application of these tools. Webelieve that it is only through the interplay of thesetwo sides of the same coin that we can educateyoung professionals, preparing them for successfulcareers in contexts as diverse as manufacturing, services, retail, consulting, market research andcommunications. We are particularly proud to use, right from the start, an interdisciplinary approach. Thus, during the two years of the course, we createa dynamic tension between quantitative methodsfor marketing, anthropological and sociologicalcompetencies to better understand markets in aglobal as well as a local context, legal issuessurrounding marketing (competition, antitrust, intellectual property and brand protection), as wellas innovation, information systems, and theinternet. At the end of the day, we want to seegraduates who are well-rounded individuals, whobring not only solid analytical skills and practicalapplication skills to their employers, but also theflexibility and openness to work in internationalcontexts.

What is special about the didactic model? There are two pillars, the Bocconi faculty and

the companies who work with us. The first pillarbrings academic rigor and excellence in researchand teaching, while the second pillar provides a richset of real-world questions to ask, problems tosolve, and business models to analyze. As a result, the active involvement of students is necessary. Not

just in individual study, but also in group projects (insmall teams of 4-5), classroom presentations(where we provide students with the opportunity topresent in front of an audience of 80-100 people),and on-site projects (in direct collaboration, e.g.during internships, with our partner companies). The objective here is not only to simulate theprofessional context but to actually roll up one’ssleeves and enter into concrete jobs, workingalongside managers and professionals incompanies such as L’Oréal, Henkel, Autogrill,McDonald’s, Nokia, RCS-Corriere della Sera,IlSole24Ore, Capitalia, Unicredit, E.ON, Telecom,eBay, VF Corporation-Lee, Grey, Jakalapromplan.

The second year of the program offersseveral majors. How are they structured?

Students have the possibility of customizing theircurriculum from a wide range of courses designed tocover the “new marketing era”. In particular, studentscan choose their own emphasis, or select from oneof the following: Business communication andmedia, Distribuition networks and retailing, Productand service management. These are classic areas of marketing, which arecontinuously upgraded and updated, with an eyeon the most exciting topics as they emerge. Thanksto the Bocconi faculty’s focus on researchexcellence, and their direct contact withcompanies, the courses of the second year providea real “shop floor” experience of marketing researchand practice, where the latest themes in academiaand business reality are investigated, discussed, and resolved.

So, overall, why should a student pick thisprogram?

Beyond the particulars of the course that we’vetalked about so far, I believe that the mostunmistakable recognition of the course comesfrom, well, the customer: the companies who hireour graduates. I believe that at the end of the day,the key question is if a graduate gets hired, how fasthe or she gets hired, and how many alternatives heor she has to choose from. I’m proud to say thateven over the past few years, and even in therecent, difficult times, many companies haverecognized the value of our graduates, who havestarted very promising careers in some of theleading marketing companies both in Italy andabroad. Also, let me tell you that I keep in touch with many, many students even after they have left Bocconi. And what makes me very pleased about theseinteractions is the heartfelt appreciation that I getfrom the alumni (now managers) regarding theBocconi training and our courses, faculty, andcompany internships. For me, the biggest thanks Icould wish for is when students tell me that theknowledge acquired in our graduate program hasmade them feel up to date, up to speed, andgenerally up to it not just during the first steps intheir new jobs, but also later, e.g. duringinteractions with other graduates from the bestbusiness schools around the world.

The Master of Science in Accounting, Control andFinancial Management has the aim of providingstudents with the set of skills related to accounting, corporate finance, and planning and managementcontrol. The program offers courses with the objectiveof developing solid technical knowledge andmethodologies for the “accounting and financial”professions and provide educational moments thataim to facilitate the interpretation of the economic and social environment. The Master of Science inAccounting, Control and Financial Managementplaces particular emphasis on financialcommunication processes within and outsidethe firm, the design of modern managementinformation systems for planning and control, and the use of models and methodologies for financialanalysis to sustain strategies aimed to generate valuein the long run.

17

Accounting, Controland Financial Management

What are the distinctive characteristics ofthe Master of Science in Accounting,

Control and Financial Management?First of all, this program was designed by taking intoconsideration professional roles with defined andhistorically recognized contents, especially those ofthe accounting, corporate finance and controlmanagers of large companies. That’s why we offerseveral courses that look into accounting andfinancial statements, corporate finance, andplanning and management control, which are thethree areas that a Chief Financial Officer mustmanage. For example, the new methods offinancial communication that firms are required tofollow are presented, as well as the optimal financialstructure, the management of corporate financialresources, and the operating mechanisms thatfirms adopt to manage their activities. However, weare aware that this knowledge alone is not enough. This is the reason why we propose a series of othercourses that aim to illustrate the characteristics ofthe contexts in which these specialized issuesassume relevance. Firms are complex institutionsthat operate in a wider context: it is important, therefore, that the technical knowledge isintegrated by the ability to read and interpret thebusiness world and its specifics. To this end weprovide knowledge of economics, law, financialmarkets and financial institutions, corporategovernance and management, within theinternational arena.

What is the program’s teaching style andare there innovative features?

In line with the specific characteristics of eachcourse, we offer a more interactive teaching style

than that found in the Bachelor. There is anincreased use of case studies, and evaluationprocesses are distributed throughout the year bytaking into consideration both individual and groupactivities, while maintaining a balance of thestudents’ workload. Another important aspect isthe advanced level of elective courses inaccounting, corporate finance and control. Theteaching style aims to create professional workers, more than just to provide specialized knowledge, inorder to provide students with the ability to know-how rather than simply the knowledge of generalprinciples, which are an essential component of thelearning process but which are not enough bythemselves.

Four majors are offered within the Masterof Science in Accounting, Control

and Financial Management. What are the various aspects each of thesespecializations focuses on?There are four possible majors: the first –Accounting and financial reporting – focuses onthe issues of financial statements, particularly thespecific aspects of financial reporting standards andthe design and functioning of accounting systems. The second major is Accounting and financialmanagement, in which issues related to theevaluation and management of financial resourcesare analyzed. Finance

Why should a talented student choose acareer in finance today?

Finance is the infrastructure of the economic systemand its role is, has been and always will beincreasingly crucial. The finance industry is goingthrough a phase of important reorganization andtransformation that will, in my opinion, give greatervalue to advanced abilities, technical and managerialcompetences, professionalism, and ethics. It is ahighly competitive and dynamic industry, in whichtalented people may be allowed to take onresponsibilities and grow much faster than in manyother areas. Such an attractive and competitivemarket requires outstanding abilities, talent and skillsto be successful. This is why our program ischallenging and demanding, even for the beststudents. These students understand that while theyare required to work hard, this work pays off since ithas a substantial impact on their personaldevelopment and their potential for professionalgrowth. A potential applicant to a Finance programshould not be scared by an intensive, challenging andwell-designed MSc in Finance, but rather shouldavoid programs which might provide him or her withinsufficient tools to be successful on the job market.

Why should an outstanding student enterthe Bocconi Master of Science in Finance?

First, because the Master of Science in Financecombines academic rigor and a practical andconcrete orientation, in order to develop all the skillsrequired in the financial industry with the prospect ofan outstanding career. Other finance degrees arestrong in one of these aspects, but very few are strongin both. Second, because the MSc in Finance is clearlyappreciated by industry leaders. It has been one of thefirst five graduate degrees in the world chosen by theCFA Institute as a CFA Program partner, and, inaddition, top Finance graduates’ success withrecruiters is evident. The companies that came toBocconi last year to hold recruiting and skill-buildingseminars for our students included the best brands offinance: investment banks such as Goldman Sachs,Morgan Stanley, Bank of America-Merrill Lynch,Citigroup, Credit Suisse, JPMorgan, UBS, DeutscheBank, BarclaysCapital, Nomura, HSBC, Royal Bankof Scotland, Lazard, Dresdner Kleinwort, BNP

Paribas, ABN-AMRO; asset management housessuch as AXA Investment Managers and CréditAgricole Asset Management; consulting companiessuch as McKinsey, Bain & Co., Ernst & Young, KPMG,Oliver Wyman, PricewaterhouseCoopers and RolandBerger. Would these companies strive to be visible tothe best Bocconi students if we did not provide asignificant value added to students enrolling atBocconi? Finally, studying Finance at Bocconi mayoffer the chance to study and work closely with a greatnumber of incredibly brilliant peers from a number ofdifferent countries: they are your network for thefuture! The enthusiasm, motivation and passion I haveseen in our current and past students are noteworthy. The opportunity to share two years with colleagues ofthis kind is one of the great things that many of ourstudents will probably remember forever.

What are the key characteristics of theMaster of Science in Finance?

The Master of Science in Finance is an intensive two-year full-time graduate program aimed at developingthe competencies and skills required to successfullyenter and work in the multi-faceted finance jobmarket. Our challenge is to provide students with thetools to face and win their own challenges. This is whythe program helps bright students develop theirpersonal skills in order to be successful and flexible inthe field of finance, either within financial institutions, authorities and regulators or at consulting firms. Theprogram intends to provide both the right mix of thetypical skills acknowledged in the financial community, including corporate finance, investment banking, accounting, quantitative finance and econometrics, aswell as an optimal mix between a sound theoreticalbackground and practice. This aim is achieved thanksto a faculty that combines an outstanding academictrack record with an established relationship with thefinancial and business community.

Which abilities and skills do you try todevelop in Master of Science in Finance

students? As far as abilities are concerned, specializedknowledge is crucial, along with a solid background inall areas of finance. We think the flexibility in masteringmultiple areas combined with technical skills in onefield is the competitive advantage we can offer whencompared to one-year specialized master programsabroad. Secondly, students acquire a strongtheoretical background but are also able tounderstand how theory is applied in practice, and thisis why we are extremely careful in monitoring theabilities top international recruiters require whendesigning our course programs. Finally, being asuccessful candidate is also a matter of skills. This iswhy we want teamwork and we try to educatestudents to learn how to work with others using toolssuch as group home assignments, group simulationsand exercise sessions or business games. Beinginvolved in group work with other talented peoplewho may have a different academic background orcome from a different country is an invaluablecomponent of the personal experience a student maygain during the Master of Science in Finance.

The structure of this course combines humanistic and economic studies, preparing students for futurepositions as managers of projects that relate to the art, media and entertainment sector. The economics and business administration area plays a decidedly largerrole, and it sets out to fully analyze all the aspects ofeconomics, law, management, organization, and technology affecting the sectors of art, culture and communication, providing graduates with theknowledge required to coordinate complex projects at national and international levels. The study area in the humanities focuses on theintercultural concept, seen as a value deriving fromexchange and comparison between different cultures. This approach transversally affects all teaching areas andis fundamental for working in the world of art and culture.Students also have the opportunity to attend internationalexchange programs abroad (see Double Degree).

Economicsand Management in Arts, Culture, Mediaand Entertainment

25

What kind of courses will be taught in the Master of Science in Economics

and Management in Arts, Culture, Media andEntertainment? The program is divided into two parts. The generalpart will be centered around managementcourses, regarding project management andmanagement of creative projects and law in theimmaterial goods. The specialization part offersdifferent advanced laboratories, for specificprofessional sectors in the arts and culture. Thestudents will be following two of theselaboratories, in order to enhance their range ofskills and increase their opportunities in the labormarket. The aim of the course is to createmanagers able to participate in the modernizationprocesses in the different professional areas. Thestudents are supported in reaching this objectivethanks to the collaboration of teachers with ASK,the Center for Research on Management andEconomics of Arts and Culture Institutions, whichcarries out commissioned research projects inthese sectors. The Center has also signed apartnership for a foundation with the ScuolaNormale Superiore di Pisa, and is active withseveral projects in Milan and in Italy. Thisintegrated system represents a vibrantinterdisciplinary coordinating center for the launchof external projects.

The course will be held entirely inEnglish. Why?

The professional specialization areas refer tointernational markets and milieus. Among them,

there are sectors where Italy holds recognizedleadership, such as heritage and fashion anddesign; in these sectors, Italy is very attractive toforeign students. We have established exchangepossibilities with Scuola Normale Superiore diPisa and IUAV, Venice, with the aim of creatingadvanced and specific paths. In other cases, likein the media, creative clusters and entertainment,Italian students are interested in havingexperiences in foreign countries. In this sense, foreign partners such as Copenhagen BusinessSchool – with which we have designed a doubledegree – or Sciences-Po, Paris are importantvalue added factors.

You talked about laboratories. What arethese activities specifically, compared

with traditional teaching?Laboratories are “disciplinary hybridization patterns”aimed at creating the best conditions for introducingstudents to their specific labor markets. We havedesigned several laboratories, each dedicated to amain professional area. The first regards the analysisof production processes in the creative field, inconnection with urban territories and spaces. Thesecond concerns cultural heritage. The third isdedicated to media distribution channels andprocesses. Performing arts, cultural tourism(another important Italian sector), fashion and luxurycompanies, design (where Bocconi has a long-established experience, signing a partnership withIUAV, Venice) and event management(communication and marketing management) arethe other laboratories.

Economicand Social Sciences

29

taught in English

What are the characteristic features of the Master of Science in Economic

and Social Sciences? This Master of Science is rooted in the tradition ofBocconi, with the unique blend of Economics with astrong emphasis on Quantitative Methods such asMathematics and Statistics, and with excursionsinto the broader field of Social Sciences. Studentswho enroll in this program aim to acquire knowledgein order to be able to pursue an international-levelcareer. This is facilitated by the internationalexperience of our faculty, and by the supportstudents receive from Bocconi for exchanges andinternships. Moreover, a Joint Degree program withthe Faculty of Economics of the UniversitéCatholique de Louvain, in Belgium, as well as twoDouble Degree programs, one with the École desHautes Etudes Commerciales and the other with theMoscow State University for International Relations, have been created.

What are the main features of thisinternational program?

Our students have strong credentials for academicinstitutions all over the world, in case they opt foran academic career; their training is however anadvantage on several fronts. The program is nottargeted to a specific profession, but it opens thedoor to many different fields. As an example, allowme to mention that three of our students wererecently admitted to a highly selective internshipprogram of the European Commission.

Within this Master of Science, thecurriculum may be personalized

towards specialization in various areas. Whattype of knowledge is explored, and whichskills are acquired in these areas? This Master of Science program really does offer alot of possible pathways for specialization,

because students start choosing from differentoptions as early as the second semester of the firstyear. Some students choose to follow the standardpath of a Master of Science in Economics, otherschoose to address a specific topic in economics(e.g. finance, banking and insurance, publiceconomics, development and internationaleconomics). Other students choose to specializethrough elective courses in quantitative methods,in history, political science, sociology ordemography. The option of a free curriculumleaves the opportunity to choose non-linear studyplans mixing different approaches.

What is the teaching style in this course and are there innovative

approaches? The style is comparable to programs offered in thebest schools around the world. The approach ismixed, depending on the discipline that is beingtaught and on the topic. Traditional lectures aremixed with data sessions in the computer lab. Written exams are mixed with assignments, individual and/or group papers, and in-classpresentations. Textbooks are used together withresearch articles and reports. The general approachis strongly rooted in quantitative, data orientedmethodologies. Also, in field courses, statistical andeconometric software is often used.

What are the main professionalopportunities for graduates in

Economic and Social Sciences? We can use experience from past years to answerthis question. About one third works in thebanking-finance-insurance sector. About anotherthird works at other firms, as well as in the publicsector and at international organizations. Theremainder of our students continues towards aPhD or further training in academia.

This program provides the concepts and operativetools needed to understand and managetechnologies and their dynamics in all companyprocesses. Students are faced with a challenginginterdisciplinary program which blends strategic, managerial, organizational and economicapproaches with the analysis of innovation andtechnology, both at firm- and market-level. Learningis enhanced by a wide variety of teaching methods, small classes, theme-based laboratories and directinvolvement in ongoing international researchprojects, with the possibility of interacting withinternationally renowned scholars and managers inthe sector. Course contents also are enriched thanksto ongoing research activities carried out by KITES(Knowledge, Internationalization and TechnologyStudies), one of the most important Europeanresearch centers in innovation studies.

Economicsand Managementof Innovation and Technology

33

What are the specific and distinctivefeatures of this graduate program?

The Master of Science in Economics andManagement of Innovation builds upon the ideathat innovation and technology are pervasivefeatures of the global economy. In the past, theability to manage technologies was critical only forhigh-tech sectors, which relied on large R&Dlaboratories. Today technology has acquired acentral role for companies in all areas, even inmainstream sectors such as banking, consumerelectronics or even fashion. Also, technology andinnovation are not the ‘sole’ business of the R&Dunit. Being innovative requires moving acrossorganizational boundaries, or drawing newboundaries altogether: it is a firm-level, company-wide endeavor central to a firm’s performance.

What is the educational setting of thisprogram and what are its innovative

features? The program’s teaching approach is uniquelymultidisciplinary. The program is organized aroundkey issues (e.g. competitiveness, intellectual propertyand internationalization) which are analyzed by relyingon various disciplinary approaches (e.g. economics, management and law). The teaching faculty hasstate-of-the-art knowledge in the issues of innovationand technology, developed through innovativeresearch as well as through daily contact withcompanies at the cutting edge. The learning processis based on a mixture of activities: traditional lecturesare accompanied by guest speakers andcontributions from manager, interactive teaching, group work, competitions and internships, all ofwhich enable participants to develop a complete setof analytical and relational skills.

What are the specific features of thisprogram, which was introduced

in 2007-2008?The first aspect of the program is the transferability ofthe skills that students learn. Students develop theability to understand the processes of technology andinnovation management, which by nature are used invarious functions and require the contribution ofvarious skills and professions. This aspect also

reflects the broad range of positions that ourgraduates go on to hold. The second characterizing aspect is interactivity andactive learning, made possible by small classes, targeted laboratories, a large, diverse and youngfaculty, as well as multiple opportunities for directcontact with expert managers on the leading edge oftechnological developments. The third aspect is the students’ international outlook.People of diverse nationalities, cultures andeducational backgrounds (e.g. economics, management, business engineering, robotics, electronics and communication) interact. Thisdiversity enriches each student’s academicexperience, providing them with the experience ofworking in varied, multidisciplinary and multiculturalcontexts.

At the beginning of the second yearstudents can choose one of four

suggested study paths. Can you describe thesemajors? The major in Industrial and innovationeconomics provide the conceptual andmethodological tools to analyze how innovationaffects firms’ strategies and their position in thecompetitive arena. It provides the skills necessary tobecome business and competition analysts at largecompanies and consultancy organizations. The major in Technology and innovationmanagement focuses on analysis of the process ofinnovation. Companies need to acquirecompetencies on key processes such as researchand development, but they also need to be able tounderstand how such processes affect production, distribution, marketing and how to respond to inputfrom customers. This major provides students with aseries of experiences, case studies and first-handaccounts aimed at fostering their understanding ofinnovation of corporate-wide processes and theacquisition of reliable tools that can be usedimmediately on the job market. The major in IT consulting focuses on the “webrevolution”. It looks at the impact of Web 2.0technologies on individuals, businesses and society, aswell as problems related to regulation, web neutralityand the social construction of web communication. The major mixes managerial and sociologicalapproaches on the strength of a solid background inWeb 2.0 technologies acquired through hands-onlaboratories and a community which is culturallycommitted to 2.0 themes around Bocconi. The fourth and newest major is Greenmanagement and sustainability. This majorresponds to the need to examine sustainabilityneeds, which is nowadays increasingly seen as amajor source of competitive advantage. There is noinnovation process, from the creation of a newproduct to the design of a new banking service, which can be developed without considering itsenvironmental implications. For this purpose, a seriesof operative tools in the field of management havebeen developed, targeted at implementingsustainability principles in innovation and technology-based processes in business.
