mento si inserisce quale strumento di filtrocon la città, complesso e frammentato esso sicompone di vari corpi di fabbrica che si svi-luppano su cinque o sei piani fuori terra e so-no uniti da un basamento comune di tre pianiinterrati. Il risultato è un complesso articolatodefinito da volumi compatti sospesi su corti espazi semipubblici e aperti sia verso l’internoche verso l’esterno. Il grande foyer dell’aulamagna, i cortili interni, i terrazzamenti ai varilivelli sono tutti definiti da superfici con grandiluci, aggetti, ampi tagli e aperture che permet-tono alla luce naturale di entrare e illuminar-li. I corpi di fabbrica che ospitano aule per ladidattica, gli uffici, una biblioteca e la grandeaula magna, si incastrano fra loro, venendo acreare negli interstizi pozzi di luce che rag-giungono e illuminano quasi a giorno anchelivelli posti a nove metri sotto il suolo.Questo articolato sistema, vetrato e arioso all’in-

terno, all’esterno è racchiuso da una cortinacompatta in pietra, spostata rispetto all’estre-mità delle due arterie stradali che ne defini-scono il lotto, in modo da creare uno spaziopubblico esterno, un “fermentatore di attivitàsociali” che funge da filtro con il caos della cittàma anche da guida, da invito per il visitatore verso il cuore interno dell’edificio. La massività dell’architettura milanese rein-terpretata con sensibilità “nordica” per la lucee la frammentazione dei volumi: è questo l’in-solito mix che caratterizza il recente proget-to di estensione dell’Università Commercia-le Luigi Bocconi di Milano ad opera del duoirlandese Grafton Architects. L’intenzione di Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, risul-tate vincitrici del concorso internazionale adinviti bandito nel 2002, era, infatti, quella diconcepire un progetto che non fosse percepi-to come estraneo, come un’importazione, mapiuttosto come un pezzo di città. Affascinatedalla solidità esterna dell’architettura locale,che però nasconde piccoli tesori interni, edalla vitalità del vicino mercato del Broletto,le Grafton hanno concepito il nuovo edificiocome un complesso molto permeabile edaperto alla città rispecchiando in pieno la vo-cazione pubblica del campus universitario. Il

nuovo edificio occupa un lotto rettangolare, di70x160m, compreso tra viale Bligny e Via Ro-entgen, all’interno del complesso universitariodell’Università Bocconi che vanta interventi diarchitetti quali Mario Pagano, autore della pri-ma sede del 1941, Giovanni Muzio che si è oc-cupato dell’ampliamento del 1966 ed IgnazioGardella progettista dell’edificio inauguratonel 2001. The immensity of Milanese architecture re-interpreted with “Nordic” sensibility for lightand the fragmentation of volumes: this is theunusual mix that characterizes the recent

project to extend the Commercial Univer-sity Luigi Bocconi in Milan by the Irish duoGrafton Architects. The intention of YvonneFarrell and Shelley McNamara, winners ofthe international invitational competition an-nounced in 2001, was, in fact, to conceive aproject that was not perceived as alien, as animport, but rather as a piece of the city. Fasci-nated by the local architecture with its exter-nal solidity, but hiding small treasures inside,and the vitality of the nearby Broletto market,Grafton have conceived the new building asa very permeable complex, open to the city,

and reflecting in full the public vocation of theuniversity campus.The new building occupies a rectangularlot, 70mx160m, between Viale Bligny and

Via Roentgen, located within the universitycomplex of the University Luigi Bocconi,

which boasts previous collaboration of archi-tects such as Mario Pagano, designer of thefirst building in 1941, Giovanni Muzio, whodesigned the extension of 1966, and IgnazioGardella, designer of the building inauguratedin 2001. In this context, the new extension in-terjects itself like a filtering mechanism with

the city. Complex and fragmented, it is com-posed of several buildings that are developed

in five or six floors above ground and are unit-ed by a common base of three undergroundfloors. The result is an articulated complexdefined by compact volumes suspended on

courts and semi-public spaces, and openedboth internally and externally. The large foyerof the Great Hall, courtyards, and the differ-ent levels of terraces are all defined by areas

with grand spaces, projections, large cuts, andopenings that allow natural light to enter andilluminate.The buildings that house classrooms, offices,a library, and the Great Hall, overlap eachother, creating wells of light in the intersticesthat reach and illuminate nearly to daylightlevels even at nine meters below ground. Thisarticulated system, glassed and airy inside,

is enclosed outside by a compact curtain ofstone, angled with respect to two arterial roadsthat define the lot, in order to create a publicspace outside, which promotes social activityand acts as a filter with the chaos of the city,but also functions to invite the visitor to theheart of the building. The north end, whichfaces the artery of Viale Bligny, interfaces withthe pulsing life of the city, implying, with afacade that becomes an architectural expedi-ent, to open a “window on Milan”, a symbol ofthe cultural contribution that the UniversityLuigi Bocconi provides for the life of the city.

The dominant element of this project is theinclinated and projecting volume of the Great

Bligny, si rivolge alla vita pulsante della cit-tà insinuandosi con una facciata che divental’espediente architettonico per aprire una “fi-nestra su Milano”, simbolo del contributo cul-turale che l’Università Bocconi fornisce alla

vita della città. Elemento dominante di questoprospetto è il volume aggettante ed inclinatodell’Aula Magna, che è in grado di ospitare fi-no a mille persone e funzionerà da vero e pro-prio teatro, con torre scenica e palco mobile.La sua platea individua all’esterno un grandefoyer, uno spazio semipubblico, racchiuso dauna facciata in vetro extrachiaro estrema-mente leggera, grazie al particolare sistemastrutturale che lascia a vista solamente gli ele-menti in vetro. Altro elemento caratterizzantei prospetti dell’edificio è la biblioteca confi-gurata come un solido volume aggettante chesembra sospeso sulla strada. L’idea era quelladi realizzare uno “scudo roccioso”, costruitocon un materiale robusto come la pietra Cep-po di Gré, molto impiegata nell’architetturamilanese di tutti i tempi. All’interno, l’uni-

verso degli uffici della ricerca è “sospeso fraterra e cielo”, un labirinto che sale piano conuna rete interattiva di cortili, ponti, terrazze ecorridoi che stimolano sovrapposizione con lapossibilità di movimenti orizzontali e verticali.Questo luogo di scambio è stato pensato comecomposto da raggi di spazio, sospesi a forma-re una spettacolare copertura che filtra luce atutti i livelli. Per le pavimentazioni di tutte learee di connessione, dato anche l’alto flussodi persone e la conseguente usura, ma ancheper gli uffici di tutti i piani fuori terra, è statoscelto un materiale estremamente resistente:le lastre di Azul Bateig della collezione NewStone di GranitiFiandre. Il particolare coloredi questa pietra, si fonde perfettamente con glialtri materiali impiegati nell’edificio – cemen-to a vista, Ceppo di Grè e vetro – offrendo allesuperfici di calpestio la resistenza necessariae tutti i vantaggi prestazionali propri del grésporcellanato, contribuendo all’intento delleGrafton di costruire qualcosa di “robusto ecoraggioso”.

Hall, which can accommodate up to a thou-sand people and will function as a theatre,

with scenic tower and mobile stage. The seat-ing area also defines the space of a large foyer

outside; a semi-public space, enclosed by anextra-bright and extremely light glass facade,thanks to a particular structural system thatreveals only the glass elements. Another ele-ment characterizing the facades of the build-ing is the library, configured as a solid project-ing volume that appears to be suspended overthe street.The idea was to create a “rocky shield”, con-structed with robust material such as Ceppodi Gré stone, always much used in Milanesearchitecture. Inside, all of the research offic-es are “suspended between earth and sky”, a

labyrinth that slowly rises through an interac-tive network of courtyards, bridges, terraces,

and corridors that stimulate overlap with thepossibility of horizontal and vertical move-ments. This place of exchange was thoughtof as composed of rays of space, suspended

to form a spectacular cover that filters lightat all levels. For flooring for all the connect-ing areas, given the high flow of people andthe resulting wear – but also for the offices ofall levels above ground – an extremely dura-ble material was chosen: slabs of Azul Bateigfrom the New Stone collection by GranitiFian-dre. The particular color of this recomposedrock merges perfectly with the other materi-als used in the building – exposed concrete,Ceppo di Grè stone, and glass – providing the

walking surfaces the resistance necessary andall the performance advantages of grés por-

celain, contributing to Grafton’s intention tobuild something “strong and bold”.
