Occupational Health Psychology

• Central topic: health, performance, and well-being of people in organisational settings

• Crucial feature: integration of knowledge from various disciplines of psychology

– Social & Organisational Psychology• Leadership and work motivation; group processes

– Cognitive Psychology• Human Factors, e.g. role of human behaviour in

accidents, human-computer interaction – Health Psychology

• Causes and consequences of occupational stress; health promotion in work settings


Occupational Health Psychology

Depending on your interest you can further focus on the Social & Organizational Ψ or Cognitive Ψ or Health Ψ approach by:

choosing specific topics for your thesis choosing a specific internship selecting specific electives.


MSc OHP: Mandatory (20 / 25)* Work & Stress (5) role of workplace factors in employee health & well-being

Work & Stress (5 ects)

• Once a year: 1st semester – block I

• Once a year (1st semester – block II)

• systemic & behaviour-related causes of accidents

Interventions in Occupational Health (5 ects)

• Once a year (2nd semester – block IV)• How to assess occupational risks & how to design,

implement & evaluate interventions

• Lectures – work groups; individual & subgroup assignments



Motivation, Power & Leadership (5 ects)

• Once a year (1st semester – block I)• The interplay between individuals, groups, and

organisations with special attention to the roles of managers

Social Psychology of Organisational Behaviour (10 ects)

• Twice a year (1st semester; 2nd semester)

• How to apply social psychology know-how to issues in organisations

• Lectures / Work group sessions, presentations, assignments, exam

Master thesis (20 ects)

• Thesis proposal and full thesis – under supervision of an experienced researcher.

• You will receive a list of thesis topics offered by staff members of S&O, Cogn, and Health Ψ. You can indicate your topics of interest and will be allocated to a topic & supervisor.

• You will be informed on the procedure in the upcoming weeks (tight schedule).

• It is also a possibility to do your thesis extern (e.g., TNO).

Master thesisTill end of January 2013:

Thesis proposal and detailed planning 14 weeks

From Feb till June 2013: Actual thesis research: data collection or getting to know your data file, analysis, write up 19 weeks

Standard deadline full thesis: June 2013

NOTE: • Internship opportunities may result in tailor-made schedule with

later deadline.

• In September, first individual mentor-meeting: thesis is one of the topics on the agenda.


Internship (10 ects)• Preferably you start an internship after you finished most of

your courses and most of your thesis.

• The timing (nr. of days a week) of the internship is flexible, and depending on your wishes and those of the organisation

• Finding a place: finding one yourself or apply to listed organisations. Criteria in the internship manual on Blackboard.

• Option for Dutch students: Trainers Course Communication Skills (Oct-Dec – 10 ects) + trainer Interpersoonlijke BeroepsVaardigheden (Jan-March - 10 ects)


Internship (10 ECTS)• standard period: Jun-Aug, 280 hrs (= 35 days, report included) • If you want to start your internship earlier, your schedule for thesis

and internship should be adapted & approved by supervisor and coordinator.

Electives OHP

Health/Clinical Ψ:

• Health Promotion & Disease Prevention (5 ECTS; 1st semester, block I)

You will learn in depth how to design and implement an intervention program to promote health behavior.

• Training Course Communication Skills (10 ECTS; Oct-Dec) + trainer IBV (10 ECTS – Jan-March; internship possibility)You will acquire teaching skills for communication and social skill-training. Note: in Dutch!


Electives OHP

Cognitive Ψ:

• Human Potential: Application (5 ects; 2nd semester – block III)You will learn to translate cognitive theories to entries for cognitive enhancement in a variety of (job) contexts

• Human Computer Interaction (5 ects; 2nd semester – block III)You will learn the cognitive issues involved in designing interactive systems and to evaluate graphical user interfaces

Preparatory course in

Methodology and Statistics

• International students and external students who would like to update their knowledge and/or skills in statistics can do a course in the first semester, to be prepared for their thesis research.

• Leiden BA students can do the course if they think they need it.

• If it was a requirement in your admission, you need to pass the course (≥ 5,5)

• Course takes place in 1st semester (evenings)

improvement of the quality of your Master education– Board of both faculty and institutional staff and student

Procedure to subscribe

Subscribing with Usis for 1st semester courses of 2012-2013 will be possible this afternoon between 12.00-15.00

• In January 2013 you subscribe for the courses of the 2nd semester• Read carefully in Usis the remarks (e.g. “Students Occupational

Health Psychology”, “international students”, “English”), so you subscribe to the right coursegroup (act. codes of the courses)

• If Usis reports for a chosen elective: “Full” or “waiting list” there is a realistic possibility that you can not follow the course. However, if it is a mandatory course for your master you will always be placed.

• You must register in time for examinations– through uSis (our on-line registration system)– by sending an e-mail to the Student Information

• Master diploma– submit the application form for graduation in time -

best you can do is to apply for graduation when you have 40 ECTS

– diploma’s are dated on the last working day of the month

– Official graduation sessions are scheduled four times a year
