We remain at the heart of Jesus mission Ascension of the Lord Week of May 24, 2020 Listen to the Word (1Peter 4:13-16) What words of phrases in today’s reading touch your heart and mind? What feeling do you have after hearing the instructions of Peter? Look into your life Question for children: Jesus helps us be strong in our faith. When do you need to be really strong in faith? Question for youth: Prayer is essential to being a disciple, be-cause it is the way we build our relationship with God—through talking and listening. What is one way you can take more time this week to listen to God in prayer? Question for adults: In these heartfelt instructions from a leader of the church, what are the ways in modern life that we sometimes suffer for our faith? Or are there no such ways? Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: Have a family discussion about prayer. Invite everyone to put their names in a basket and to pull a prayer partner for this week. Throughout the week, pray for your prayer partner. Do not reveal prayer partners. At the end of the week, go out as a family for an ice cream treat and reveal whose name each member had for the week. We pray when we ask God for something or thank God for the many gifts we have been given. Create a family prayer box with your family. Use a shoe box and cut a small opening on top. Give each family member a small piece of note paper. Invite family mem-bers to write down what they would like to ask of God. Place the prayers in the prayer box. Thank God for hearing your prayers. Prayer is our communication with God and our awareness of God all around us. Nature places us in communication with God because in nature we experience the awesome wonder of God’s goodness. Take a family nature walk or nature trip near your home. Experience the wonder of spring, the newness of life, and the sounds of God’s creation.

The Ascension of The Lord
May 24, 2020 On this day, it is fitting that the Scripture passages be linked by the theme of the Lord’s Ascension, and his charge to the disciples to go into the whole world and proclaim the Good News to the ends of the earth. As Christian stewards we put our hope in the Lord, knowing that he is always with us as we answer his call to discipleship. It is through his gift of the Holy Spirit, that we use our time, talent, and treasure to boldly proclaim his Gospel to the world, witnessed by how we live our lives.

GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES In 1991, Marxist guerrillas in the mountain village of Huasahuasi, Peru, executed Irene McCormack, Jose-phite sister and missionary. Her “crime” was feeding the poor with food donated by overseas aid organizations. The violent activities of these terrorists were a daily reality but, despite warn-ings, Irene chose to stay in the village with its impover-ished people. After thirty years of teaching in Australian schools, Sister Irene found her purpose in life teaching the chil-dren of Huasahuasi to read and write. One evening armed guerillas arrested her and took her to the village plaza, where five villagers were al-ready face-down on the ground. The captors conducted a mock trial. Sister Irene was denounced as a “Yankee imperialist”—even though villagers protested that she was Australian—pronounced guilty, then shot in the back of the head by a girl soldier. The example of Sister Irene and the villagers who died with her has been remarkable, resulting in an an-nual human rights activities week, community clean-ups, and at least one new Peruvian vocation to the Jo-sephites. Sister Irene also left something just as important—a description of the spirit that called her to go to Peru. Back in Australia in 1987, she explained to family and friends the revelation she received at the age of forty. The call to be a missionary came to her through re-flection and prayer. She described it as an overwhelm-ing experience of the unconditional love of God and not simply an intellectual conviction. She recognized God beckoning her through an inner voice. If she were to be to be true to herself as a wom-an, a Christian, a Josephite, and a world citizen, she felt she had to respond to the Spirit within. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Come, Holy Spirit, Almighty Sanctifier, God of love, who filled the Virgin Mary with grace, who wonderfully changed the hearts of the apostles, who endowed all your martyrs with miraculous courage, come and sanctify us. Prayer for Memorial Day - May 25th, 2020 God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride. Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters. Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord. que han muerto por la causa de la libertad y llevalos a salvo a tu reino de justicia
