Nangainallur Sri. Venkatesan
In our pursuit of higher education which is focused mostly as to how one can have
a comfortable life, literature and ones own mother tongue is given secondary
importance. The fact adiyen is writing this in English is itself a testimony to the
predominance of a foreign language in our daily lives. I have nothing against any
language but it should not be at the cost of ones own mother tongue wherein lies means
to understand the hidden treasures of the our sampradayam. Not all feelings can be
expressed in a single language and that is where the importance of learning different
languages matters. How fortunate
we are that we have a means
(tongue) and medium (languages)
to communicate.
The reason why I preface the above
is the word oon Thanthu in
Desika Prabandam amritha Ranjani
Paasuram 32. Adiyen has revolved
around this pasuram on several
occasions to try understand the depth of the meaning our Acharya had in His Thiru Ullam.
This was and continues to be adiyens saahasam knowing fully well that only Swami
Desikan can explain what He meant in this Pasuram.
The summary of this Pasuram is the description of apaara Karunai of the Lord to this
Jeevatma expressed in simple Tamil that triggers a series of emotions helping the
jeevatma to be closer to the Lord .
To a non tamil, a translation will not bring the same emotions ( anubhavam) which is
the real purpose. It is some literary work of the Acharya but is a means to understand
why we are here , what we should desire and how do we achieve the purpose of this

Janma. If adiyen says that this one of the best passuram, it will be Ghora aparaadam
as my knowledge is very limited and who am I to give marks to the Lord. But Adiyen can
surely say, it is one of the paasurams that has stirred my emotions and adiyen enjoys
thinking about it whenever I get time , just to get a one extra angle of what the Acharya
had in His Thiru Ullam.
Adyen hope that I have given you the curiosity to read this
prabandam and this passuram , enjoy the poetry and the
devotion of the Acharya and also share you anubhavam with
other Saha Hridyas.
Reference to Lord should be read as one owns Ishta
Perumaal.

(Smt. Rajashree Venkatesan)
Swami Desikan has composed over a hundred granthas .Sharanagati Deepika is of
special importance to him.He fondly calls Deepaprakasar Perumal as Daivam
Adhwateeyam.
Sharanagati Deepika talks of the Lord of Thirutanga who is Daivam Adhwateeyam,
a subject (Sharanagati) which is Adhwateeyam composed by an Aacharyan who is
Ekameva Adhwateeyam.
Peria Azhwar in Senniyongu paasuram
calls the Lord as Jyothi Nambi who has entered
his heart with all his parivaram. Lord of
Thirutanga is the Jyothi Nambi whose avatara
rahasyam was to dispel the darkness of the
world for Brahma to start his Ashwamedha
Yagna.Lord of Thirutanga Deepaprakasar
Perumal is the anna (elder brother)of Athigiri
Arulala Perumal.Deepaprakasar Perumals
thirunatshatram is Chitrai Revathi and Lord
Varadans thirunatshatram is Chitrai
Hastam.Thus this Lord of Thirutanga
Deepaprakasar cleared the darkness of the
world for Kanchi Varadans avataram.Deepaprakasar is indeed Daivam Adhwatheeyam as
He is still dispelling the darkness called ignorance from the all the jeevatmas who visit
Him.
Sri Kaliyan in his Tirunedunthandakam says Vilakoliyai Maragathuthai Tirutangavil
Vekkavil Tirumaalai Paada kettu Valarthathanaal payan perthen varukai vendru mada

kiliyai kai koopi vananginaale.Kaliyan gives us a soochakam (indication )of the arrival of
a Mada Kili who is none other than Swami Desikan. The Lord of Tirutanga who is Daivam
Adwateeyam gives Kaliyan an insight into the future _ the arrival of a anupravesha
avataram that is Swami Desikan.
True to Sri Kaliyans words Totaramba delivered a Suka like prodigy who straddled the
world with his writing. If Lord Deepaprakasar is Light then Swami Desikan is Naadam
(sound) Thus this Daivam Adhwateeyam electrifies the whole place together.
None of the Azhwars or Aacharyas have the unique privilege to be born next door
to a Divya Desam koil. Our Daivam Adhwateeyam does that for his anupravesha avataram
Swami Desikan. Our Swami Desikans Tirumaaligai is the Mudal Tirumaaligai after Lord
Deepaprakasars sannidhi.
Our Daivam Adhwateeyam was a witness to Swami Desikans birth , his first steps
and his first prattle.Lord Deepaprakasar was a witness to the Baalya Parvam of Swami
Desikan.Even Athigiri Arulalar had to wait. Lord Varadan could see Swami Desikan only
when he could walk with his maternal uncle Shri Appullar.

Sharanagathi Shastram was once rendered on Panguni Uttiram day by Sri
Ramanuja in Srirangam. After that there was no grantham or stotra that could be read
easily by everybody. It is believed that Sri Pillai Lokaacharyar who was elder to Swami
Desikan wanted Swami Desikan to write about Sharanagati Shastram. Our Swami Desikan
accepted the request and sent his creation on a pattolai to Sri Pillai Lokaacharyar. After
reading the stotra Sri Pillai Lokaacharyar rendered the Thanian Seerondru thoopul
tiruvenkadamudayan..Thus was born Sharanagati Deepika. The Stotra is like a hand
lamp (kai Villakku) for all of us who wish to do Bharasamarpanam at the Lords feet. The
essence of high shastras is made easy in fifty nine slokas.
It is interesting to note that Our
Swami Desikan always ends his stotras
with a phala struti as in Hayagriva sloka
where Our Swami says whoever recites
this stotra will have clarity of speech and
intelligence, as in Dasaavatara Stotra
the reader will get aishwaryam from all
the corners of the world. All the stotras
of Swami Desikan gives a phalastruti to
reader but in Sharanagati Deepika Our Swami says He created this stotra because of
elders request and that this stotra is divyam (just like Sri Kaliyan finished his first 10
paasuram on Naarayana endrum Naamam he called it deiva nan maalai). Our Swami
uses sneha for lamp and vishaya for oil and dasha for the wick to use in lamp. The lamp
of jnana is lighted for atma samarpanam. Thus the last sloka compares with the Mudal
Azhwars first three paasurams. Once again it is the Lord of Thirutanga Daivam
Adhwateeyam who makes Our Swami use words that can have two meanings there by
reminding us of the Mudal Azhwars.
One more feature which makes Deepaprakasar Perumal Daivam Adhwateeyam is
Our Swami physically has done his Bharasamarpanam at this Lords feet.In the 30th sloka
Swami Desikan calls the act of Bharasamarpanam as a marriage between Perumal and
-
2015 13
Atma.If Deivanayaka Perumal of ThiruAinthai made Our Swami pine for Him as
Venkatanaayaki , Deepaprakasar Perumal makes him is Vadhu(Bride).
Swami Desikan himself is Daivam Adhwateeyam as no human being can possibly
write more than hundred granthas in a span of hundred and one years. Paaduka
Sahasram, Rahasya traya saaram are creations that can be the handiwork of an avatara
purushan only.
Swami Desikans son Sri Nainaacharya
and his shishyas consecrated Swami Desikans
archa murthy in Tiruthanga. Our Daivam
Adhwateeyam Deepaprakasar had been his
custodian. Many years back due to neglect Our
Swamis archa tirumeni got misplaced, it was
Our Deepaprakasar who had preserved it.
On Maha Sravana day (Purattasi Sravanam)
Our Thoopul Kula Mani with Anjali Mudrai goes
to Daivatham Adhwateeyam and does His
mangalashasanam. It is only after this he goes
to meet his favourite deity Lord Varada. It is on
this day that Vaikhanasa Agama mingles with
Paancharatram !!
It is indeed the wish of Daivam Adhwateeyam.
Vaazhi Deepaprakasar
