This is a highly interactive working session designed to help you advance your job search. We will focus on:

Ø How to identify the kinds of job(s) and organization(s) where you really want to work

Ø How to align your interests and skills together with your MASI experience to optimize your job search

Ø Where are the jobs? How to identify those sectors and market leaders where there is strong funding and hiring occurs

Ø Review of your CV and LinkedIn profile to ensure it best reflects your skills and interests to attract potential employers

Ø Steps to educate yourself about those markets, sectors and organizations you want to pursue

Ø How to create connections and leverage your network to reach your target employer: Kroc School, USD and beyond

Ø The “art of the email” – how to optimize communication and follow up with new contacts and potential employers

Ø How to create an action plan and keep accountable for your personalized job search

Ø What are your salary requirements ? Minimum needed? Realistic possibilities based on the sector?Ø Benefits required? Full time vs. part time?

Ø What is your timing for by when must you be working and is that PT or FT? Ø Do you need your dream job right away OR can you do something interim as you strive to get there?

Ø How much time and energy can you and will you be able to devote NOW and before graduation to this? Ø Be realistic! Setting goals and being accountable to making it happen

Let’s look at examples:Social sector funding growth: San Diego Examples• Workforce development- especially related to marginalized communities/”difficult” to employ- San Diego Workforce

Partnership, Kitchens for Good, EDC• Homelessness – Jewish Family Services, Leichtag Foundation, City and County of SD• Human trafficking- Free to Thrive, Project Concern International• Health and human services (varies)- Live Well San Diego, Rady’s Children’s Hospital, 2-1-1 San Diego• Education ( varies- e.g. early childhood education is key right now)- SAY San Diego- $500K early childhood programs• Anything related to social enterprise

How to research funding trends and financial viability:

What is your comfort level with risk and what are possible guidelines to evaluate to enhance your employment sustainabilityfor any job you pursue?

Ask and or research:

• How long has this organization been around?• Is there management stability or high turnover?• Is this sector growing or declining ?• Look at funding trends and revenue growth for this specific organization- is there an upward trajectory over time?• AND / OR Is their funding and/or revenue stable over time if they have been around for a whole?• Is the funding for the position you are pursuing actually built into their budget?• Is this job a necessity or ”nice to have” for the organization? How might that affect you and longevity of this position?

1. Identify the person from whom you would like to get an introduction-• Whether to an organization, informational interview, etc

2. Craft a short, concise email clearly stating what you are seeking/ hope to achieve & attach your CV, Linked In• Make sure no grammatical errors! • Be respectful- address them to start as Dr., Professor, Mr. ,Ms.• You can be more informal based on how they answer

3. Send an email and ask them to introduce you4. Once they agree- thank them write away!

1. 24 Hour Rule- ALWAYs respond in 24 hours5. When they introduce you:

• 24 HOUR RULE• Thank, reply to and acknowledge the “introducer” in this email and then move them to bcc:

• ALWAYS cc: all• Specify what you hope to learn/ achieve from this contact• Ask if you can meet, talk or?

• Ask what is best way for them to connect?6. 72 HOUR RULE ( 3 business days)

Ø MAKE make sure it is up to date and represents the skills, strengths and experience you want the world to see

LinkedIn- Use it!- Fill out your profile- Keep it professional- (Keep all other social media private/appropriate for employers)- Leverage it to connect with people in person



• Create a spreadsheet of everything you are doing• I use Google Sheets to keep it up to date and interactive

• Track contacts and action related to this:• Name, email, what you asked of them, dates of communications- when / if you communicated• Response, follow up, reminders• Links- who can lead you to further introductions• Put links to organizations, websites so you can reference easily and be informed when you talk to them

• Educating Yourself• Have a sheet for links, ideas for anything that can educate you on this space, ideas• Webinars to learn about this space• Articles and announcements

• Have a plan for outreach• How many emails and calls per week?• Schedule informational interviews?• Actual job applications completed?• Other opportunities for meet and greet, networking, etc.
