Thank You for Your Generosity, Marysville!
Due to the generosity of local businesses, clubs, service groups, churches, fire stations, the police department, city employees, and countless students and individuals, many local families in need enjoyed a happier holiday season. Food, funds, gift cards, toys, time and talents were donated to ensure that those families had a happy Thanksgiving and a merry Christmas.

V o l u n t e e r s i n t h e S p o t l i g h t We thank all our volunteers, whose hard work and dedication allow us to serve our community. Here are our recent Volunteers of the Month!
September: Kathy Shafer Having taught home economics at Marysville Middle School for 32 years, helping provide people with much needed food seems like a good fit for Kathy Shafer. It all
started back in 1983 with a food drive at school. Before the MCFB was housed in a building, she and her then 3-year-old son, Mark, gave out food at the St. Mary's Catholic Church rectory. She's been volunteering off and on ever since but consistently for the past 10 years helping clients make their selections and generally filling in wherever needed. Kathy enjoys quilting, needlework, gardening and reading. Widowed after 32 years of marriage, she also enjoys traveling with family, especially to visit grown son Mark who's a sheriff's deputy in California. When she was a child, Kathy's parents set an example volunteering at the local hospital. Kathy, following in their footsteps says, "Life is good when you can give back to your community." Thank you for giving back at the MCFB, Kathy!
October: Mike Mulligan For Mike Mulligan, volunteering with the Food Bank comes naturally. It was his mother, JoAnn Mulligan, who in 1974 started the 'food bank' by dispensing food
from St. Mary's Catholic Church rectory. The rest, as they say, is history. Mike has been president of the MCFB for 20 years. His commitment to the community of Marysville and its families in need is
strong. Along with duties as president, Mike puts in many hours helping with the Letter Carriers' Food Drive, All-City Food Drive, the Toy Store and other special MCFB events. Mike keeps busy with his construction business but enjoys skiing, fishing and hiking in his free time. He recently hiked the Grand Canyon, rim to rim! He has two grown children and an 11-month-old grandson all living in the area. Making a mother proud, Mike explains why he volunteers with this quote: "To whom much is given, much will be required." Thank you, Mike, for living out those words.
November: John and Dar Fails
For the past eight years, John and Dar Fails have dedicated every Thursday morning to assembling weekend bags of food for the now 600+ school children in our Food for Thought program. When they heard about the program, they knew they had to be part of helping to end childhood hunger. Dar succeeded in getting both financial help and volunteer support from St. Mary's Catholic Church. John, a Knights of Columbus member for 32 years, also secured his group's support. (Dar and John have also headed up the Knights' Coats for Kids program for several years!)
Dar retired nine years ago from a 35-year career in the court system. John retired 17 years ago from the retail and service industries. They have two daughters and a grand-son, all in the area. In their free time, Dar enjoys cooking and baking while John likes woodwork-ing and computer activities; he also
volunteers with a local Boy Scout troop. They both enjoy traveling, boating, gardening and reading.
Dar and John say volunteering brings them joy and they love being around the people at MCFB. We are so grateful to have your heartfelt commitment, Dar and John!
December: Bob Rise and Ron Wagner
For the past five years, Bob Rise and Ron Wagner, the Toy Store's 'Dynamic Duo,' have worked tire-lessly in November and December picking up our red barrels filled with toys and food items at local businesses. Then, during the four days when the Toy Store is open, their hard work is invaluable! In addition to volunteering, Bob works in satellite systems operations and enjoys traveling with his wife, Sandy. Ron is retired from Pepsi Bottling Group and volunteers with Marysville Police. He and his wife, Sandra, have six children. He enjoys motorcycles, cars and cruising. Both Bob and Ron list volunteering along with their other hobbies. It's amazing how a 'hobby' can make Christmas merry and bright for so many Marysville children. Thank you, Bob and Ron!

MARYSVILLE STILL HAS SMALL-TOWN SPIRIT During the holidays, resources for many households become strained as folks try to provide for their family members. For many, the challenge is not seasonal; yet it is this time of year
when we take notice and take action to help those in need of support. And the rally of support to serve our Marysville/Tulalip neigh-bors in need was astounding.
An enormous thank you goes out to local businesses, service groups
and other organizations—plus the incredible students in the Marysville and Lakewood school districts. These groups and organizations, together with countless individual contributors, provided donations to answer the needs of local families.
By the numbers, Marysville is no longer a small town. Yet, so many times I heard our volunteers rejoice in that small-town community spirit. It is truly heartwarming to see and experience that powerful force. Ours is a big town with an even bigger heart—in all seasons.

Many Thanks to...
Ty and Patty Wernet for organizing, orchestrating and working the All-City Food Drive.
Everyone who donated towards the purchase of our commercial propane generator. In the case of a power outage, there will be no interruption in distribution. Additionally, MCFB is now better equipped to become a Community Point of Distribution for Marysville in the event of a widespread emergency.
Special Request for Fence Funding
Now that we have our gener-ator, we need to keep it secure. The cost of fencing to enclose it is much higher than expected. Any donations will be gratefully accepted. A generous anonymous donor will match funds up to $2,000!
Thanks for Helping Our Toy Store Serve 1,096 Kids! We couldn't have done it without... More than 150 volunteers! The Grove Church who once again opened their perfect facility to host us. Home bakers who donated hundreds of delicious cookies. Kiwanis for the coffee and cocoa to go with those homemade cookies. These wonderful establishments who donated generous, delicious meals to our volunteers over four days: Cristiano's Pizza, Etc., Dos Agaves Mexican Restaurant, Jeff's Texas Style BBQ, Jersey Mike's Marysville, Port of Subs Tulalip, Mod Pizza and Moose Creek BBQ. And for securing these food donations, a big thanks to 'Big Mike' Mike McDowell. Please thank these businesses when you patronize them!
In Loving Memory: Joshua Caldwell and Mike Ferri Longtime volunteer Joshua Caldwell (pictured at left) passed away on November 3, 2019. He was an inspiration and had won many Special Olympics awards. In spite of his disabilities, Joshua volunteered faithfully every Tuesday morning helping to sort canned goods, and always with a smile on his face. His happy attitude was contagious and he will be greatly missed.
Mike Ferri (pictured at right) passed on December. 3, 2019. He was committed to the mission of the Toy Store and served on its committee for many years. He also gathered our red collection barrels around town all year 'round. Mike leaves behind his wife, Elaine, three daughters and four grandchildren. His kind, generous, compassionate spirit will be missed.
